The Rainbow Children is another I would like to see happen (if there are outtakes etc) I don't know much about the background recordings for this album. After 1998 what he recorded and for what get's really murky. I heard from someone on the Org before that some song that ended up on LotusFlow3r might have been outtakes.

I wish they would consider For You. Its really low fi but the song craftmanship is excellent. Sure, it's before he became weird but its a great Joni influenced album.

Oh yes! nod that was such a great debut album. I was listening to his audition song "We Can Work It Out" the other day and it blew my mind all over again, there's so much attitude and personality in the songs that haven't made it to the album such as "Make it through the storm", "Wouldn't U Love to Love"(original) and the jazz instrumental sessions he did. Also, I'm curious to see if Patrice Rushen recorded any jam sessions with him in that time beyond the involvement of "Baby". And speaking of the Joni influence, I hope the "Leaving for New York" gets remastered.

A "Triple Threat" boxset is the only reasonable thing to do with "1999", "What Time Is It?" and "Vanity 6"...
Complete with all outtakes, alternate versions, non-fade out versions (like for example his biggest hit of the album "Little Red Corvette", that one isn't even on there but "How Come U Don't Call Me?" is?!) Prince versions of the the associated artists tracks from that era... And, of course, a complete "Triple Threat" show with Vanity 6, The Time and Prince... There are at least 2 complete multicam "pro shots" in his vault...
But no, they put out this amateuristic shit...
Let's hope this is only because WBR is desperate to cash in before 2021 and after that a real ultimate set is released... Preferably complemented with an online repository with more live gigs, rehearsals, soundchecks and studio jams etc...

The best selling catalogue album, behind PR and 1999 of course, is, surprisingly, the eponymous album of 1979. So, if the logic is still to release the best popular albums, Prince is a good contender.

Unless I don't know what you mean by catalogue album then are you really saying "Prince" is a bigger seller than Diamonds & Pearls or ATWIAD?

That is a great track list and I would buy it for sure. However, I suspect it would need to include the remastered version of the actually release SOTT album as well to be complete.

I would argue what would make it perfect is that it showed the chronological evolution from Dream Factory -> Camille -> Crystal Ball -> SOTT + TBA

Of course then you get into the debate about which configuration or Dream Factory to include (arguably the last one with songs like It's A Wonderful Day, Teacher Teacher, Sexual Suicide, In A Large Room With No Light and Power Fantastic being placed on a "vault" disc.

"The Black Album" needs its own deluxe edition and shouldn't be buried on a "Sign "O" The Times" set... There are enough alternate/uncut versions, outtakes and studio jams for that album to make a decent multi disc set...

I’m only aware of the alternate versions of “Superfunkycalifragisexy” - “When 2 R In Love ft. Eric Leeds” (BTW shouldn’t it belong on a Lovesexy Deluxe?) and Walkin’ In Glory (gospel answer to “Bob George”).

There’s actually more than that and enough to make a Deluxe edition of “The Black Album”?

I agree, it stands alone. And to be able to present photos taken for the album, and include all the information specifically about the aborted album would be wonderful.

It was clear that they were moving in that visual direction by November 1987

Actually I always liked the idea of releasing TBA and Lovesexy as a double album kind of aligned with the Lovesexy live show.

Interesting idea, to make a black album/lovesexy mix. That might work, now that I think about it. It also allows a space to put some of the spare tracks from 87 somewhere else, as Sign Of The Times will max out what's possible (although, to add to that tracklist, it needs the Prince vocal version of Place In Heaven somewhere as well).

.

Between Parade deluxe, Sign Of the Times deluxe (including Crystal Ball, Camille and Dream Factory) and The Black Album/Lovesexy deluxe, it'll be a good time for us. All can include a great liveshow as well.

.

It might be an idea to take Dream Factory though, and add it to the Parade deluxe, instead of Sign Of The Times. Sure, some tracks might overlap, but it has a lot of different versions and it is, in a way, the swan song of the Revolution, so it might fit better there. Parade can tell the story of how the Revolution became more than just the band to let Prince be who he wanted to be, but being more collaborative, with experiments all over the place until Prince somehow felt the need to take control again, sending some people away from him, so as to make it possible for him to take new paths that were just his. Sign Of The Times can then tell the story of Prince defining himself again, starting over after the Revolution.

.

The Black Album/Lovesexy can then tell the story of his first (of many) spiritual awakenings and insistance that the record company should not be listened to, which will give a nice leitmotif for the deluxe versions coming after. smile

Disc 3: The Singles

La, La, La, He, He, Hee (3:21)

The full version of La, La, La, He, He, Hee (Highly Explosive) is the definitive version. The song really just starts to get going when the single version fades out. After that it's a musical tour de force.

You see that is another great idea. Just so many ways of putting these super deluxe releases together.

Just for fun (not saying this is right) but you could apply a rule that the actual released album marks the END POINT of any evolution so any songs recorded after (excepting b-sides) the album was complete have to then be used on the next deluxe edition.

Using that rule Dream Factory would not be on Parade as it came after. Using the "rule" it would have to be on SOTT super deluxe to show the evolution leading up to SOTT.

Similarly even though RHIAFP was recorded earlier*, it ended up on TBA so my suggestion of combining TBA and Lovesexy works (in my head cannon and on my iPod that is how I have had these for years anyway - side Love and side Sexy). The rule works here too as TBA was part of the evolution to Lovesexy.

Regardless of how it lands I would be so happy if we got super deluxe editions for ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy (TBA).

*I would be happy to see the same song appear more than once if it fits the evolution of the end product. So Rock Hard could appear on both Camille and TBA because, well it did appear on both.

Was Roadhouse Garden also from that time period?

.

Hi Lurker

.

If you're talking about the song Roadhouse Garden, I believe that was recorded in the period between the Purple Rain album being complete and it's release. Hence it being considered a Purple Rain era track.

.

However, if you're talking about the Roadhouse Garden album that Prince was considering releasing around 1998/1999, that was meant to be a compilation of Revolution era tracks that spanned between Purple Rain and Dream Factory, so 1983-1986.

.

Since some of the songs rumoured to have been included on RG were Our Destiny, Roadhouse Garden & Wonderful Ass it’s unlikely to come out now since those came out on Purple Rain deluxe.

.

These new Super deluxe editions will probably cover everything considered for Roadhouse eventually.

[Edited 9/12/19 13:32pm]

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I knew he'd considered releasing the album in the late '90s, but I thought it was something he'd also considered releasing in the '80s around the time of Dream Factory.
