Another great video!

I do find it interesting that when people make these unboxing videos they treat their product very badly!

The previous video had the person bending each item as it was taken out of the wallet.

Don't people like to keep their items in mint condition???

The shrink wrap should be cut along one edge and then replaced again afterwards! That's what I have always done, particularly as it includes a sticker.

I wouldn't want one fingerprint on my copy!!!

cool

I fully agree with U. I always wash my hands b4 holding my Prince's stuff. Coming back to The Signs O The Times box set: despite the bonus disc, its content is the same as the excellent japanese one (that I'm glad to own).

Does "U Got The Look" match the quality of the rest of the film on this release?

Got my copy today. Did not open it yet, as I have teenage kids with friends in the house tonight...

The packaging looks great. Will open it tomorrow, tell the rest of the family they can either join me in watching or go for a walk, and then crank up the stereo.

Can't wait !!!

PS - looks like this is already sold out, at least in Amazon Germany you can't order it anymore.

What a great year - now let's hope 1999 sounds awesome, and I am a happy camper...

Just got my copy along with the Emancipation, Chaos and Disorder and Versace Experience Vinyls...I guess it could be said that today was quite an awesome day indeed biggrin

I'm watching the BluRay right now as I'm typing this and I'm quite pleased with the quality...great sound and crystal clear picture quality...apart from some film grain, but of course there was gonna be some of that, we're talking about a concert movie from 1987 after all.

One slight disappointment is U Got the look, which is only in SD quality...it's quite a sharp contrast going from crystal clear picture on Now's the time to that good old fashioned washed out VHS look from the 80s...but I guess it can't be helped, I guess the U got the look music video was only ever filmed on video instead of film?!?

But apart from that, an amazing release. Packaging is absolutely on par with the Estate releases and will be a great addition to my shrine smile

Can't comment on the bonus material yet, though...

U Got The Look appears different due to the production process used.

Never think in terms of SD and HD as those are marketing terms. It's better to think in terms of picture dimensions and data rates for the image.

The video, with elements shot in Paris, was filmed on 16mm film which gives a 4:3 picture ratio. Whereas SOTTs was most likely shot on S-16 or S-35 which gives a 16:9 ratio.

The film footage for U Got The Look was telecined onto tape for editing. This video includes many overlays which are achieved by producing multiple generations of the footage so it can be run simultaneously to create the cross-fade effects. This has an effect on quality with the introduction of picture noise and loss in the colour signal - with red degrading first. Further generations are lost when creating the u-matic tape master - as it was in 1987.

Being U Got The Look is in a 4:3 ratio and SOTTs is 16:9, the U Got The Look video had to be massively cropped, across the top and bottom, to fit the film ratio. Yet now we have a physical tape master being used in a film edit!!

HOWEVER, where the production process is at fault for the degraded picture quality, the solution in 2019 is very simple... go back to the video tape master and digitally edit this back into the movie without any loss of quality - which couldn't be done in 1987.

The proof of this is on YouTube!!!!! Take a look at U Got The Look! It is 4:3 with great chroma and lumiance levels. Naturally this is massively shrunk down and compressed but still looks great.

I would have gone back to the U Got The Look master, I would have made a digital transfer at the highest possible screen size and bitrate and replicated the inward and outward edit in the film.

This would have given a far superior result. But oh well, I wasn't involved!

I very much doubt the estate would have helped them out.

Wow, thanks for throwing some epic knowledge my way, fantastic explanation! 👍

I can highly recommend the included documentary Peach and Black times. They’ve assembled quite the impressive cast on this one: Susan Rogers, Leroy Bennet, Levi friggin’ Seacer Jr. and Cat, to name a few!

There’s some fantastic insights on the whole backstory of the production of the tour and the movie...a must watch for a Prince fan, imho!

Also listened to the commentary track from the guys from the Peach and Black podcast and was having a blast. It was like watching the show with a couple of your best mates who are just as heavy into Prince as yourself...since I don’t have any mates that like Prince at all, this is the next best thing!

All in all, apart from the U got the look slip up, this is a great release!

The included movie poster and the pictures are fantastic, too! I’m gonna frame some of that shit!

I loved that bit so very much, particularly when we says the only bit of choreography Sheena could cope with was flicking back her hair!

I also loved the part when Cat says she got a call from Prince asking her to quickly get to Paisley Park as Madonna had turned up and he just could not cope with her on his own!!

Such awesome insight!

Cat comes across so very lovely!!!!

Given all of of the stories around this amazing tour and film, its so great to hear recollections from those who were directly involved. This is exactly the kind of nerdy insight and detail we've been wishing for!

The fan input is great (as I'm sure Duane Tudahl's will be for 1999), do other major artists go in for this kind of thing? Edgar Kruize writes brilliantly, he seems to be very much on top of the detail and the Peach & Black Podcast guys do a great job with the commentary.

Its a shame though that for whatever reason, more people didn't take part. Sheila seems to be a huge presence in peoples' memories of this period - as she is in the movie itself. Her input would have been wonderful to hear, as would Eric's, Miko's and Atlanta Bliss's. Sheena Easton's thoughts on the UGTL video would have been great to hear.

In many ways it feels like Susan Rogers understands the value in getting things on the record before its too late, and does so with such generosity. I imagine she doesn't get much in the way of reimbursement for the many contributions she's made to Prce's legacy since he passed away.

Gripes aside I love this set, great booklet, hours of content, fantastic packaging and of course a superb (at least to my eyes and ears) transfer of the movie itself.

I've seen the film on VHS and DVD, and thought I know it - but what we have here is a whole different affair. This is such a great experience! The restored quality brings out a lot of details I have never seen before.

About the documentary:

Great to see that Levi talks so warm-hearted about Prince! And I didn't know that Steve Purcell was so heavily involved in making the movie. I'm sure he must have a whole lot more interesting stories about his experiences with Prince. It would be great if one of the podcasters here would be able to talk him into getting into more detail...

I passed on this because is there any doubt there's going to be a proper reissue for North America? Also, surely there's some outtakes from the performances.

I couldn't buy it when it was on amazon for 55 euros and today I went looking cause this was one thing I REALLY wanted and now it's 110 euros up to 220. Looks like private sellers grabbed it and now re-sell it for a lot more money. I'm super pissed right now.

Ah yes, sure, the thing that hasn't happened in 30+ years will now surely happen. Any day now.

At yourself, I hope. Because there were plenty of other places that sold it -- e.g. https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/...um/9224430 -- and it was stated from the beginning that this was a limited edition (3000 copies) and that most of the releases by this label sell out quickly.

First of all I either buy from Amazon or from local shops and the local shops I buy from didn't sell it. And the second thing is that I didn't even know that the site you linked existed. Also, like I said, I COULDN'T BUY IT BECAUSE I HAD NO DAMN MONEY AND STILL DON'T HAVE ANY. I just wanted to check if Amazon still has it so I can buy it next month and didn't expect it to be resold by private sellers for that much money. You can link all the other shops who sold it, it doesn't matter cause I didn't have the money to buy it when it released.

But hey, you're always shitposting on here so 🤷‍♀️

Has anyone received this set with the initial cover (that used the movie poster) as opposed to the final version with the portrait of Prince and the blue heart sticker?
.
I'm asking because I see a couple of eBay listings for copies with the initial cover artwork and they appear to be using actual photos of a shrinkwrapped set – so are there two different versions out there?

Ha, finally got it! I was pissed cause lazy me didn't order in time, and it was sold out online with the quickness, and I didn't want to pay the ebay prices neutral

then yesterday I was at Media Markt at the local shopping center here in Linz (Austria). without any hope I still went to the DVD&record section to have a look at least... and there it was, bright and shiny, placed in the spotlight section for new vinyl releases...

also asked the guy if they had any more in stock, but they got only one item... and he can't order new ones. but computer said they still have one item at two other shops in my area... all still for a moderate and reasonable price of 66 Euros.... so everyone buys online anyway, hardly anyone goes to record shops anymore.... guilty here myself

hmmm, I might get those two more as a safe investment? or not yet... I'll just wait til they sort them out and move them to the bargain bin for a few bucks biggrin

didn't unpack it yet, I really want to celebrate this biggrin maybe with my first unboxing vid

There is only one cover. Those eBay listings probably are drop-shipment type companies that don't actually have the item in stock. Or they are trying to pass off one of the other SOTT releases as the new one.
