feeluupp said: You re talking about Charmasters estimations. But he put 5.4 millions copies (!) In the US while this is unrealistic. . 1999 was certified 3*PLATINUM in July 1985. So the sales due to the Purple Craze were also included in this certification. . In 1992, Entertainment weekly published a figure of 5 millions worldwide. . In march of 1999, it was certified 4*P. So it took 14 years to sell one million more, in an era where records sold by millions. . From 1991 to 2018 it sold 950.000 copies according to Soundscan. . So in fact, 1999 is more near the 4.7 millions figure than an insane 5.4 millions that can't be proved and does not link official figures.

We really don't know 100% what sold what, and to be honest even the RIAA certifications are all outdated and haven't been certified, we just have estimates, unless everything is to be audited, which it will never will.

Purple Rain was last certified in 1996 at 13 Million, we all know it has surpassed that.

1999 was certified 4 Million in 1999, that is in the U.S. alone. It's possible 1999 stands at 7 million world wide now, it is also possible it stands at 6, we will never know will we?

The Very Best of Prince is at least 3 Million by now in USA, but has only been certified 1 million, if TVBOP was recertified in USA it would make it his 3rd biggest selling album of all time in USA.

Prince(r.i.p.) even said that Purple Rain needed to be audited. That sales was far surpassed what is being reported. I believe sales are really closer to Thriller's sales 50 million plus. So glad Prince(r.i.p.) left WBR & earned what was rightfully his before he left this earth. But wisely came back to obtain ownership of his master recordings. Sadly he didn't live long enough to reap the benefits of it. sad

"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when eye was doing the Purple Rain tour eye had a lot of people who eye knew eye'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."prince

You do realize that a Deluxe Edition can have 2 or 3 discs of UNRELEASED SONGS.right? That's in addition to a fresh remaster of the original album. They could also throw in a live show from this era on a DVD,plus extensive liner notes and photos. Can't see why any longtime fan would be against that.

There are thousands of unreleased songs in the vault, probably close to 90% of which dont exist on Princevault. You guys truly want deluxe packages of existing stuff or live concerts over getting a CD of 15 tracks you never heard of before?

I don't know about you guys, but if they keep focusing on already released stuff, none of us will be able to hear all the unreleased stuff in our lifetimes. I would much rather unreleased songs than live or reissued albums. Live stuff can be found all over the place and the albums we already have.

.

You have a point. However, the rereleases can be remastered with some bonus discs of time appropriate unreleased tracks. They also aren't much in the way of releasing proper unreleased discs, like Originals or whatever they want to call it.

.

My dream scenario would be a series of "originals" albums, but only with tracks from artists that weren't in his stable, or from albums that only had one or two of his tracks, like Taja Sevelle and Dale Bozzio. The albums he (almost) fully produced or wrote should come out as Deluxe versions, with the original album remastered, with a second album that mirrors the first, only with Prince versions of the tracks (and maybe demos for the one or two tracks he didn't do, like for the Mavis Staples or Sheila E albums). Then of course his own albums remastered, with bonus tracks and a period appropriate live show. One of each per year to avoid flooding the market.

.

That leaves the special album projects that never happened: black is the new black, Dream Factory, Crystal Ball, High, Rebels and so on. One of those per year too.

.

That would be 4 albums per year, which seems like a completely reasonable number and can be sustained for the next 25 years, which should be within the livespan of most current fans. That gives some time to think about and develop ways of getting new people into the fold if you want to continue the revenue stream. (Very succesful with the Beatles, fairly succesful with Jimi Hendrix, somewhat with Elvis Presley, less so with Bob Dylan and other 60s people)

.

Doesn't seem like it's going to happen though, so I'll take what comes, official and bootleg.

I am not against anything, it is only a preference. I will take the unreleased discs that come along with the deluxe packages, but, I would I forgoe a the remastered album discs in place of discs with unreleased material? Yep, every second of the day.

Please don't assume that we don't want completely unknown / unleaked songs? We're just discussing material that we like.
.
I know it's frustrating when WB are sitting on a mountain of treasure and so far we're only getting one album a year, one of which was a demo cassette and the other was a collections of previously released songs by other artists.
.
Having said that, Prince remasters are long overdue. These deluxe releases should have been done years ago when Prince was still with us, and if WB can piggy back unreleased material along with these remasters then the more the merrier. So far Purple Rain Deluxe has been the most substantial when it comes to unreleased material.

The problem is that the estate still hasn't put up site where we can purchase unreleased songs. Originals was a nice release but should have been at least a box set with 50+ songs. They're wasting time on small releases and now we probably have to wait until next year for a new album. It's frustrating and really sad considering how much unreleased stuff there is.

Like the PR remaster? See https://www.rollingstone....ms-191597/

Exactly what you got, right?

Or are you indeed in a different universe from mine and is this org thing a rather convenient method of communication between both?

I used to be Team "Deluxe Editions," but really it's just license to jack up the price and double-dip. I don't understand how or "why any longtime fan would be against" purely unreleased track sets like leadline is advocating... Without any armchair record exec hypothesizing.

Are modern remasters ever good? I don't need lectures on potential, I'm talking in practical application for popular music artists from the 1980s... what are we talking like an 8% chance they get it right, maybe? Why would this even be incentive.... And it also forces them to temper their outtake selection to either the era (really only a year or two), or make weak attempts to construe outtakes from other eras as justifiable for a 1999 set.

As for liner notes and photos, well, that's probably another 10-17 bucks for the super royal badness infinite deluxe purple excretion edition to purchase the priviledge of sitting in awe of those. We're talking like an 80 dollar set at this point.

Very true, remasters are seldom done properly.

If I had a 1999 Deluxe in front of me vs 3 cd's of unreleased material, honestly it is a very easy choice for me to go with the 3 cd's.

I have a ton of Deluxe Editions by my other favorite artists and bands that are done perfectly.Check out the Beatles deleuxe editions, for example. It can be done right.Just depends on who's involved.

The thought of having crystal clear versions of "Extra Lovable",the amazing demo of "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)" and other goodies from this era makes me wanna start a petition to get this thing released SOON lol I can't wait anymore!

Michael Howe was very clear the next project will be released next year, and not this year.

I m sure the favour will go to the live at first avenue 1983, or to an Originals vol.2, than to a 1999 deluxe.

No, but as an insider, he s well aware of the estate strategy.
Moreover, he was the guy that already pushed back two times in a row the 1999 deluxe edition by submitting Piano...1983 and Originals to the powers that be.
