Per Nilsen DMSR book

I have been looking for this book for a while now But all copies that are selling online are over $150. Is that what the original price was when it came out? Or are sellers trying to milk it. Kinda crazy. One with tape is selling for $60.

Yes, I got it for about $20 when it first came out. Sellers are milking it because it's rare and demand went up after P's passing.

I once found the email address of a Per Nilsen living in Minnesota. I thought it was the author and wrote to ask if he'd consider reissuing it as an ebook. The guy wrote me back and said he was the wrong Per Nilsen.

Per tried to sell me a copy of The Vault for $150. He was greedy "trying to get rid of copies sitting on his desk". I said no thanks.

Check Amazon used, an "Acceptable" copy is $50. Also check used sections of Barnes & Noble online. There are other bookstores online that resell stuff. There's one in NYC that's huge - I can't think of it off hand. You can google it.

DMSR is a good read. It left me wanting more. Too bad he never followed up with anything.

Unfortunately I used to have it. Over the years a lot of my Prince memorabilia has regrettably either been cleared out or donated to good will. I kept all my CDs and videos, but not much else. If by some miracle it turns up I'll happily mail it on to you as I'd much rather give it to a fan who'd appreciate it, but I'm convinced I don't have it anymore. Sorry bud.

From what I remember it contained a lot of the legendary stories which are now common knowledge amongst fans such as accounts of the night Prince pulled the Black LP, or the time he erased Wally. Fortunately, other than that, a lot of the actually information it contained such as cataloguing his recordings and various projects he worked on are all up on princevault.com (which has been a God send for me recently). I know it's not the same as a tangible book that you can kick back and take it, but please don't feel as if you're missing out on much.

"He was greedy"... I'd say supply and demand. I have 3-4 copies of The Vault left, not "trying to get rid of copies sitting on his desk". Per

That's what you said to me. I don't blame you for selling a book. But I distinctly remember you approaching me (possibly here) to buy one for $150. And that you had a few copies on your desk. I just think the price was high, not the idea of selling in general. Peace 2 u.

It's called supply and demand, sweetie. On this one, the supply is tight and the demand is high (because the book is out of print) - hence the price. Up to you to decide whether it's worth it or not.

You basically repeated what you said the first time. We get it. Of course, and someone has to ask it, what were you smoking when you decided $150 for The Vault book was too high (even back then, when the two of you must have spoken)?

the vault is more of a list of songs and appearances and whatnot. Not much of a narrative.

I realize what I said. I typed it.

I wouldn't even pay $150 for a book Prince put out himself. How many people bought 21 Nights for $5 at Borders thinking they could resell it for $50 a pop, and couldn't? The Vault has great 411, no doubt. Per did his homework. But $150 for a book is ridiculous, especially years after the fact. Things are higher in price when they first come out. They shouldn't be that price eons down the road.

sounds flakey for an author to sell his own book for that much but that isn't outrageous for rare books, i once sold an old boxing training book for 500 bucks, of course, today, with the internet, my buyer has probably kicked himself since it's all online for free. Pers was being greedy, not a good look, if he wants more money, do more great work the first one is right up there with the best prince books ever done.

There are two versions of DMSR. One is dated 2001 and the other is dated 2003. Can someone explain the difference between the two versions? It appears from the page counts that one is quite a bit longer than the other. Thanks!

Yeah, the back matter chronology in DMSR is what The Vault is overall, mostly. It's surely a great reference guide. I wish Princevault would compile everything like that up through the end of this year. I ain't paying $150 for that either, but I'd pay more than a normal reference book you'd find at B&N or something.

You over-realized it. Which, of course, is the point you missed.

The rest of what you say is opinion so not worth responding to. Only poor people say $150 is too much for a book, especially when they chose to ignore, or are ignorant of, supply and demand. Next.

The Vault went up to the present day of publishing, which I think was around Musicology era(?)

.

It is more of a reference thn a narrative, with a chronological diary approach. PrinceVault.com performs much the same function today with the benefit of being online and more upto date, expanded obviously.

Shudder to think what condition these books were in, though. How much excrement did they have on them?

why would you say that? they are in normal/fair condition, most used books aren't really that used, most people don't even read the books they buy, I think 90 percent of the books I have I don't read, don't have the time. of course that's not the case for prince books, many of them i've read multiple times.

Well that's one I'd like to find. Being a technical sort nerd about stuff, I feel like The Vault would be right up my alley. And yeah, I've not seen DMSR out there yet, but I have a hard copy anyway. I've never had a reason to look for one.

Back around Y2K, I had photocopied the back section of DMSR just because I wanted something easier to access and read in larger print when referencing a date or whatever. That's about as far of a scan I ever got. haha
