Purple and Gold is his greatest bestest, most goodest masterpiece. If you don't agree, then um..play in freeway. Or simply disagree. Your choice.

Naw... If you think that is his greatest song then you do need to rediscover his catalogue.

lol

Naw... You need to just let people like what they like and move along.

a perfect home for "Moonbeam Levels" would have been Graffiti Bridge.Think about the Kid's struggles in that movie. He was depressed,confused....the lyric "I'm looking for a better place to die" would have worked really well here.Plus,I think that album needed at least one more really good song.

But your opinion is biased, since that s the name of your avatar !
.
Seriously, I love this song, like I love almost every thing from Prince, but I think that's not the forgotten masterpiece like I often read here.
.
I don't think it would have been even a hit at the time. No way.
.
It wouldn't have been worse than, let s say the ladder, but I think there was something on the tone of the song that wasn't really like a sad song, not really like a fun song, and the chorus wasn't that great and catchy, so Prince was on the opinion it would have detract the listener from an album.

I certainly am biased: it’s my all time favorite song!

But everyone is biased, and to claim that I need to “rediscover his catalogue” because my bias isn’t the same as someone else’s bias is ridiculous.

Hi Joris.

.

OK, so I have the song 'Moonbeam Levels' on the original 'The Work' box set, the updated 'Work It 2.0' set and lastly on BFTP 4.

.

I've just compared these three versions to the official release and the very most I could make out was about 3 notes. Maybe 2 seconds of additional fade at the most. I’m assuming you’re not referring to that, so is there a longer version I am unaware of? May I ask how you came by the song? Note, I’m not asking for a link or anything. Just some indication of what it was released on so I can check it out for myself. Thanks. wink

You can find this version on the bootleg “A Better Place 2 Die”.

That version of Moonbeam Levels has a 15 second piano piece at the end.

To me it sort of sounds like Prince playing around on the piano during the long fade. It's nice and it's a shame this was not included on the 4Ever version.

cool

I still find it amazing he didn't use this song. He knew it was a masterpiece. The fact that he pulled it off so many configurations is a testament to his love for the song. I guess he just felt folks werent ready for it yet, or, he was holding out for that perfect album to put it on that never came to fruition.

A couple of things about the song. Pulling it from records means he thought it didn't fit the overall album, not that the song was too loved. There is nothing revolutionary, controversial, or weird about the song, so people "not being ready for it" makes no sense. It's not even weird by the standards of 1967, so I don't know why people wouldn't have been ready for it. You know what people were not ready for? Rite of Spring. Sgt. Pepper's. The first line of the song prohibits it from being a classic in my mind, though it does show Prince's siliness quite well. You don't wake up one morning and decide to do something you have no experience doing. Of course he didn't know where to begin. Kamasutra is not worth a damn, either, but he sure woke up and decided he would write symphonic music. He didn't know where to begin there, either. I like the song fine, however.

....and that is why I said "holding out for the perfect album to put it on in my post". Whether people not being ready makes any sense or not, that concept clearly made sense to Prince, since he seemed to repeat it over and over.

Great lyrics, overhyped and way over rated song by the fans, especially on The Org.

Anyone claiming this to be his VERY BEST SONG needs to go back and rediscover the Prince catalouge.

You need to rediscover the difference between subjectivity and objectivity.

It sounds lovely. Fingers crossed I'll find this version in the wild at some point. I recently heard 'Once Upon A Time' for the first time and I'm really fond of that piece. Prince creates some amazing magic when it's just him and a piano.
.
.

And come on fam. Let's not argue over music like this. Critique the music by all means, but let's not berate people over personal taste.

I think the obvious replacement would be for Free, which always sticks out on that album. But maybe that's precisely why he didn't.

I actually prefer "Free"...it has a message that's universal and easy to understand.

"Moonbeam Levels" would have confused many listeners.People would have been like "what is a moonbeam level?" biggrin

Do we know if an alternative/or reworked version of Moonbeam does exist in the vault

I remember reading somewhere that Prince pulled it out around the time Michael Bland joined the band and that he recorded new drums for it at the time, but I can't seem to find it. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I was a little surprised when the version that appeared on 4Ever was the one that has been circulating, considering Prince`s proclivity for reworking and re-recording tracks. Surely there must be a later version? although this is the first I have heard of tell of one...

I really wish we could find out more about Prince`s recordings post 1996 neutral
