I think he had a fear of gay men and I also believe he was fascinated by gay women in some way.

Not sure about being afraid of gay men. Maybe more avoidance and distancing himself because he was so often assumed to be gay or bi sexual.

*

It's been said that he enjoyed watching two women together. Not a shocker, as this is pretty common with most hetero men smile

^^^ Also, just remembering the scene in Graffiti Bridge when Morris and Jerome freak out and show disgust when they realize they had been "fondling" each other on the couch in the dark once the lights come back on.

I have no clue how Prince felt in his heart, but he was very supportive of Janelle Monae and she is pansexual. Maybe Prince was in a mood that day he talked to Wendy...we just don't know. I never thought he was a homophobe but again, just my opinion.

Let's not play nice.

P was a homophobe for a period of time in his life to placate Larry, and the JWs for religious reasons.

Someone told me on another thread that during the Rainbow Children listening party at PP Larry compared homosexuality to drug addiction.

I don't hold this against P though.

He was doing what he thought he needed to do during that period of his life.

P became evolved once again during his later years, as it appears many lesbians frequented PP.

Just my opinion. lol

Prince wasn’t a homophobe. He just didn’t believe in homosexuality. This was his belief like many other religious people. There’s nothing wrong with having that belief either.

How do you not "believe" in homosexuality?? It is an actual thing that exists and has existed - it doesn't need to be proven. I think you mean to say that he did not agree with it, which is very different.

I think telling your friends and former associates that they must publicly denounce their homosexuality before he would work with thiem again was a bit more than just not agreeing with their sexuality. Larry and the JW really messed with his mind for awhile.

Now, how about listening to the rest of that song you posted?

...

She said, "Are you gay?"
Kinda took me by surprise, I didn't know what to do
I just looked her in her eyes and I said, "no, are you?"
Said to myself, said
"She's just a crazy, crazy, crazy little mixed up dame
She's just a victim of society and all its games"
Now where I come from
We don't let society tell us how it's supposed to be
Our clothes, our hair, we don't care
It's all about being there
Everybody's going uptown
That's where I want to be
Uptown
Set your mind free
Uptown
Got my body hot
Get down
I don't want to stop, no
As soon as we got there good times were rolling
White, Black, Puerto Rican, everybody just a-freakin'
Good times were rolling
She started dancing in the streets
Ow, girl, she's just gone mad, you know
She even made love to me
Ooh, best night I ever had, ah yeah
I never talk to strangers but this time it's all right
See, she got me hot, ah, I couldn't stop, ah
Good times were rolling all night, all night, yeah
Now, where I come from we don't give a damn
We do whatever we please
It ain't about no downtown, nowhere-bound, narrow-minded drag
It's all about being free
Everybody's going uptown
It's where I want to be
Uptown
You can set your mind free, yeah
Uptown

Yep, I know the song very very well. Again, Prince CREATED this persona/image to mess with the press and keep fans guessing/questioning. Dez Dickerson has talked about this. The press was responding exactly the way he wanted and planned them to respond. They were accurately describing the persona that he was emulating on stage. Have you gone back and watched any of the footage from the Dirty Mind/Controversy era?? Even the 1999 tour when he was up in the shadows on the bed thrusting and then kicking his high heeled boot up while throwing his head back - absolutely androgynous.

*

If you really pay attention to the lyrics he's saying dancing, partying, sex...doing whatever we please....good times were rollin'....it's all about being free to dress and act how you want. He says "white, black, Puerto Rican..." not "gay, straight, bi "....everybody's just a freakin'. He was talking about RACE in this song, not sexuality.

*

You also bolded the lyric where, after she asks him if he's gay and he answers no, he then sings, "she's just a crazy, crazy, crazy little mixed up dame..." he's saying just because he's androgynous doesn't mean he's gay. "Our clothes, our hair, we don't care...." He's saying in the song that "society" would classify him as gay based on the way he looks and dresses, but he doesn't care - he's going to do what he wants to do.

*

In a live performance of this song back in 1982 he sang "she said, are you gay? I just looked her in the eyes and said, no is your Mama?" That lyric change implies that he would be offended at being asked that question.

It’s pretty simple: Prince wasn’t down with homosexuality. Nothing wrong with that. We should just leave it at that.

It's not that simple though. I'm not "down" with homosexuality - meaning, I am not homosexual. However, I accept and understand that many others are, and am perfectly fine with that. I have many gay and lesbian friends. There is a difference between that and condemning those who are homosexual.

We know certain things for sure. We know that in the 1980's he accepted, befriended, and worked with homosexual people (a la Wendy and Lisa). We know that, by 1999 (per Wendy) he refused to work with homosexuals (a la Wendy and Lisa) unless they publicly denounced their lifestyle (all Prince would say when asked why the Roadhouse Garden project was cancelled is "ask Wendy and Lisa"), so his opinion and acceptance had clearly changed by that point which coincides with his transition into the JW beliefs.

*

We know that, by 2004, he was working with Wendy and Lisa again. So, regardless of whether he still held to the strict JW beliefs, he had accepted Wendy and Lisa again as friends/collaborators.

I assume it's possible for someone who doesn't agree with LGBT relationships to still associate with people who are gay or lesbian. I doubt Wendy or Lisa's lifestyle impacted their ability to play instruments, perform live and write music. Only Prince could tell us for sure why he fell out with them and then worked with them again later in his career.

Except it was more than just strictly a "working" relationship with Wendy and Lisa back in the 80's. They all spent personal time together as well. They were good friends. He stayed over at their house in LA prior to PR release. He also had them back on stage with him in MN Sept '88 during the LoveSexy show. So, it wasn't just a "professional" thing.

*

We also know that he missed them during the early to mid 90's based on his song ITBIS, which was signifcant enough for him to include on Emancipation.

*

We know that at the same time he was getting deep into the JW religion (1998-99) he had also started planning the Roadhouse Garden release with Wendy, Lisa and the other members of The Revolution. He stated in one of the early 1999 AOL or L4OA fan Q&A's that Splash was planned as a track on RG and it was one of his favorites. Later that year he told Kurt Loder during his MTV interview (I think Nov '99) that the project had been put on hold. In Matt Thorne's Biography he asked Wendy and Lisa specifically why the project was cancelled, and she stated that he refused to work with them because they are gay. I think she stated, "because we're gay, and we're damning The Revolution to Hell".

*

I believe the first time they worked with him again was when he asked Wendy to perform Reflection with him on Tavis Smiley in 2004. So, it was five years before they connected again. Then they did the Brit awards with him in 2006, and then Wendy was on stage performing with him in MN at the 7/7/2007 show. He introduced her as one of his best friends.
