Feels much healthier to celebrate his birthday, as I would've even when he was alive. Despite him not celebrating birthdays, this was that "one day of birth" that changed so many lives.
.
A little story: I am a dancer and choreographer living in NYC and had the awesome opportunity to perform at Spike Lee's Prince Block Party in 2017. Spike Lee tapped into his choreographer connections to intermentently present Prince inspired dance numbers every half hour or so. After our performance to The Beautiful Ones and I Would Die 4 U, he had us stay on stage and jam out to couple songs.
.
Here is a video of me having my Prince Splits Moment onstage with Spike Lee:
.
He has inspired me immensly in my artistry. His atheleticism, musicality and natural sense of movement inform my approach to dance and choreography. I had one day hoped he would see what I could create to his music. I had just started getting into choreographing in 2014 while in school.
At that time he was working with 3rdEyeGirl, and surrounding himself with creatives not much older than me. I know he gets a lot of criticism for working with younger bodies than him, but I believe the creative mind exists within a totally separate timeline. I deeply respect him for giving them their opportunity to be a part of his creative process.
.
Below is a short video of my choreography to The Question of U. This was the first time going back in the studio after he passed:
.
I want to close by saying I'm super grateful for this community. I joined when I was 16 in 2010, and this was the only place where I could really dive in and learn about Prince from people who cared just as much as I did. Yes, this place can be source of daily negativity.
However, the reality that we are all here on the basis of love is actually very beautiful.
Thank you, Prince!
.
Much Love,
RR

I agree with TheKid94, that this was "one birth that changed so many lives."

There is so much that came into my life because of Prince, his music, that would not have come into being otherwise.

1. Friendships - logging into The Holy River for the first time, I was nervous, a little anxious, because I'd heard all of these horror stories about what happens to people online, but having just seen Prince in concert for the first time, having checked out the website, I decided to give the chat a try. I got the internet because of Prince, because I wanted to learn more about him after having seen him perform. For some weird strange reason, I felt drawn to him. And in The River, I met some incredible friends, people who are still friends today, that I've had the opportunity to meet irl.

2. Acceptance - I always felt like I was different from everyone, that I somehow didn't fit in. That was definitely true in my family while I was growing (and even today), and so I felt like that meant there was something wrong with me that I couldn't fit in. But watching Prince's fearlessness, his walking onto a stage wearing speedos and singing about God, you don't get much different than that. He taught me to embrace myself, the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly, the different. I'm me and there ain't no one else like me, so I may as well dig the ride for as long as I have it.

3. Depth - Growing up in my family, the one thing lacking was depth. In-depth conversations, in-depth self-awareness, in-depth contemplation on anything other than what's for dinner, go to work, come home, go to sleep and do it all over again the next day. I never realized until I entered The Holy River how much I had craved that depth, depth of conversation, depth of thought, depth of self, depth of spirit. I realized that I need that kind of depth in my life, a deeper connection with people, rather than the surface, superficial connections that my family seemed to make with each other, the ol' "How's the weather today?" "What are you fixing for dinner tonight?" "What's on the TV?" I needed to explore "Who am I?" "What/who is God?" "Pop Life".

4. Self-Awareness - When I found The Holy River I was a very timid, quiet person. Mousy, even. You looked at me and I was liable to skitter away as fast as I could to the nearest hidey hole. But I found a voice in The Holy River, I began discovering who I was, what I believed outside what I had been taught by family and realized my beliefs don't necessarily align with my family's beliefs. For the first time in my life, I was getting to know myself. That knowledge of myself began to manifest in my life outside of The River, and I became more confident, more outspoken, less likely to skitter away.

These are some of the things that Prince brought to my life (albeit in a round about way, but it was connected to him, his website, his fans - of whom I would never have met if not for him, and my desire to get to know more about him after that first concert).

He was (is) an incredible artist, he had soul, depth, that I think pulled others, that were seeking something more than just superficial, to him.

So, Thank you Prince. Thank you for the friendships, for the depth of your spirit that you shared with us, for the laughter and the tears, but most of all, thank you for sharing the same space and time with us and giving us the beauty and passion of your music.

Happy Birthday, Skipper.

(I miss you.)

The event takes place at the Bird (1612 Harmon Place, Mpls., 612-767-9495, thebirdmpls.rocks) with two seatings: at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. A dance party will follow the last seating; singer Mina Moore will perform Prince songs during each meal.

I know.

The most talented musicians in the world were usually in awe of his immense talent.

I am thankful for the quantity I have to listen too and know that there could be more things to come.

I almost feel embarrassed about how much I miss him.

Happy Prince Day!

I've always wanted to get a tattoo but could never decide on just what it was that I wanted to get. After visiting Paisley Park last year and seeing somebody with the Symbol tattooed it made perfect sense. He is my biggest influence as a musician so getting something like this would never be something I'd regret later on down the road.

However, being the guy that I am, I wanted a reason to justify my wanting to get one. The answer came later when I joined Weight Watchers to try to shed the extra tonnage I was carrying. I set a weight loss goal and decided that this would be the way I'd reward myself for hitting it.

Well, I hit the goal and said "put up or shut up" and decided to get the ink done. The image was influenced by "The Dawn" bootleg CD and I have received MANY compliments on it.

So, here's the ink - fresh from having it done on November 6th, 2018. I've also kept on the WW program and the weight is still comng off. What should I do to treat myself next?

I hope all of you enjoy this as much as I'm proud to have it. Cheers! smile

How purple fans across the globe plan to celebrate Prince’s ‘born day’

Prince at the NAACP Image Awards in 2005. (Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Although Minnesota has many opportunities to explore and celebrate the life and legacy of Prince during his birth week, fans from around the world come together in their own communities to celebrate the Purple One.

.

Craig Alexander, a Texas native, created the annual event Prince Day Houston, which is held in the city of Houston, Texas. The event, which is built around Prince’s June 7 birth date, recognizes Prince’s contributions to music and the community. In 2016 Alexander coordinated with the City of Houston and Mayor to proclaim June 7 “Prince Day” — the only Prince Day designated by a city outside of Minnesota.

.

Influenced by Prince’s attitude about life, music, and overall work ethic, Alexander strives to promote his event based on these core values.

.

“Prince taught me that if you get to work and get busy, you can do it all,” Alexander said in an interview with The Current’s Sean McPherson. “You don’t need to wait around for this or that — just get it done. Make sure you are always true to self.”

.

Alexander created the event to showcase local artists, giving them a platform to demonstrate their own abilities and talents. Inspired by Prince’s music, philanthropy, and influence on his own personal life, all of the proceeds from the annual event are given to local charities.

.

“I always made it a point to be close and connected to not just his music, but his philosophy and his thought process, as it’s deeper than the music,” Alexander said. “Without a doubt, he had an influence on others outside of Minneapolis, specifically in Texas.”

.

How are other Prince fans around the world celebrating his life and legacy around June 7? We asked fans to share their plans in an on-line Purple Current survey.

Along with the purple community of Atlanta, Georgia, one fan plans to attend a weekend-long set of Prince-related events.

Some find ways to celebrate privately, such as a fan in Portland, Oregon. Every year, to commemorate Prince’s life, this fan takes a bike ride. The city of Portland will also play the soundtrack to Purple Rain as a backdrop for a different anniversary celebration.

.

“Since Prince has been gone, I bake a guitar-shaped cake, make Prince-themed cupcakes, and I place them on an altar that I decorate in my office at work,” wrote a fan in Las Cruces, New Mexico. “My co-workers wear purple on that day at my request.”

.

A fan in Richmond, Virginia plans to attend a Prince-inspired cocktail party at their neighborhood bar. Across the globe, a fan in Glasgow, Scotland plans to stream Purple Current and listen to all things Prince. Another fan in Scotland plans to host a screening of Under the Cherry Moon at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow.

.

Prince’s philanthropic values have created inspiration for one Seattle fan who plans on, “doing something for someone else, donating 100 books to a local Boys & Girls Club, and donating to an organization in Chanhassen all in his honor.”

.

Local events in the Twin Cities are drawing fans from around the world.

.

“I will be in Minneapolis with a group of purple buddies,” wrote a fan. “We are coming from different parts of the U.S. and outside the U.S. We’re all friends on social media and it will be our first time meeting. What a better way to meet each other — on Prince’s born day.”

.

Many of the local and visiting fans plan to attend Twin Cities events including a Mazarati show, tours at Paisley Park, tribute shows, charity events, the First Avenue exhibit at the Minnesota History Center, an Ingrid Chavez performance at Electric Fetus, as well as other lined up week-long events.

Some intend to get purple symbol tattoos and purple pedicures, while others plan to meet up to talk about Prince’s life at a local restaurant.

.

The Minnesota History Museum plans to honor Prince with an event for fans at the museum on June 6. Partnering with Prince’s family members, the museum will host a “Prince: from Minneapolis to the World” talk.

.

For fans like Craig Alexander, we can all find connection with Prince’s music. “When all else fails, go back to the music,” Alexander said. “Prince’s music has something for us in his music no matter what your situation is.”

.

Listen to Craig Alexander’s full interview with Sean McPherson on Purple Current on June 7 at 11 a.m.

I thank the Powers That Be for letting me be alive to witness and share in the genius that is Prince. So many personal memories are intertwined with his songs. So much happiness and joy he brought to myself and millions of others who dared to listen to what he was saying with his music. One man who touched so many, many others with his God given talent, who wasn't afraid to be different and stand out from the rest. Thank you, Prince for coming into my life and becoming a most treasured part of my existence. I wish you Heaven, my friend. May you forever be at Peace.
