Yeah, I "hopped on that bandwagon of being hip and cool because it's the thing to do"... in 1976!! lol

Vinyl sales do not need to "exceed" streaming, they merely need to be a significant percentage of sales revenue, and they are.

Why does this threaten you? If you prefer the quality and lack of control that comes with streaming, nobody is taking that away from you or bitching about it's existence. No need for you to be upset about vinyl and pretend nobody wants it just because you don't.

I'm actually considering buying vinyls not for listening but for decoration, because some of my favorite album covers look mighty good in that format. But I was wondering, if you order LP's on Amazon (new ones, not second hand), do they reach in perfect quality, are they protected enough, or do the corners sometimes get smashed before delivery? I used to buy many comics trade paperbacks on Amazon and they didn't always reach in pristine state sad

Odds are about the same. They’re pretty easy with exchanges though.

Thunderfunk nails it exactly here. Vinyl never actually went away... it dropped to a low ebb, but never died... I know because I never stopped buying it!

Cassettes and 78s DID die, and for valid reasons (and the current cassette revival IS a perfect example of a fad - zombifying a defunct format because it's old and cool, even though it is inferior in quality in almost every way. That really is pure nostalgia.... But vinyl was never inferior in the way the cassettes are/were

if vinyl is a fad it's a fad that's been around longer than streaming... LP vinyl is now actually the longest surviving medium for recorded music, I believe...

If it's a fad, then why are there records plants opening up across Europe and the US? Why do the sales keep rising every year?

Why is EVERY SINGLE major record label - and countless indie labels - pressing every new release to vinyl as well as pressing past titles?

It's not a fad, and to think so is just naive and uninformed. Fine that you're not interested in it, and now I"m just repeating Thunderfunk, but it bears saying twice... it doesn't have to outstrip downloads or streaming to not be a fad, it just has to be a serious format within the industry, which it most certainly is... just because you're not interested in it, doesn't mean others aren't.

If anything, it is streaming that is the fad. Right now it's hot potatoes, but renting music is just dumb, in my humble opinion. Its day will pass.

the fad of streaming will go away the day the internet ceases to exist. The everyday consumer especially your millennial's and Gen Z want simplicity and ease (they will do no more than they have too) The ease of streaming/downloading music is easier. Do you agree? I am come from the vinlyl age of music, nothing like the snap, crackle and pop of dust. There is a small market for vinylrecords, but the reality is these generations that I speak of, I don't see them rushing out to buy records players, to sit at home to listen to music. Do you?

Who was the genious to decide that these releases were to be on vinyl?

Michael?

If so: didn't he know which were on CD preiously and which weren't?

If so: why is this a `good` path to go down?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

[Edited 7/13/19 13:30pm]

Disclaimer: I have never used nor will I ever use streaming.

This being said, my experience is that the vast majority of people listen to music very casually and have little interest in curating a proper music collection the way many of us harcore music fans here do it. Many people used to be happy owning a few dozen albums on LP, cassette or CD and listening to the radio, and those same people will find a perfect alternative in streaming sites, that allow them to listen to everything they're interested in (most people don't care for the sort of niche music that can't be found there) wherever they are on earth at any given moment provided they do have an internet connection. As for more devoted music listeners, I also know many who find streaming convenient because of the mobility reason, and who will both purchase or illegally download records for the stuff they really wanna have, and will be happy to replace their former radio use by streaming for more casual use, and will gladly let the algorythm suggest stuff based on what they've listened before, it makes for some sort of a personal radio experience.

So I think streaming is definitely here to stay.

LPs still seem to have a good future ahead of them as a dynamic niche market, more that I thought they would some years ago I must admit, they're good for audiophiles and also a social marker of sophistication for hipsters, the same way bookshelves are a social marker of sophistication among educated people (who may find it embarrassing to have hundreds of ebooks hidden in their kindle and to welcome their guests in a book-free house), but there is no way in the world LPs will ever become again the main medium for music, for obvious practical reasons.

Just got back from Half Price Books. They have waaaay more vinyl than CDs. Talked to a young man in his 20's that was buying a turntable. Just an anecdote, but not rare.

Way too much, especially being off-topic. I would point you to his presidential candidate debates with Bush & Clinton from 1992. He ripped both the Republicans and the Democrats apart for being the corporate shills they are.

YES! I remember watching the 1992 debates and Ross handed Slick Willy and Old man Bush their asses! Had he not dropped out and had a viable running mate, it would of been interesting for sure!

Maybe I'll check it out one day. I've never watched an American presidential debate so far neutral

But I intend one of those days to watch all the old French final debates from before I stared watching them in real time, I'd be curious to see what exactly was debated then vs to what is debated today.

you wont be sorry...amazing how Ross broke it down and the other 2 try to debunk it with their own political agenda! Ross should of won, but the US was scared of an independant with no political experience...but somehow Trumpy got in so...

I'm closer to millenial age. When people here rant against vinyl they really do make themselves sound extremely dated and curmudgeonly, which oddly enough is usually the premise behind their argument that any vinyl discussions are antiquated and ludicruous to even entertain.

Younger generation loves them some vinyl. This is why there's been such an emphasis with the vinyl versions of these recent Prince releases--literally every artist and album these days has some sort of bonus or special attraction for their vinyl versions. Millenials either stream, or buy vinyl. CDs are the fading medium, not vinyl.

I'm not even saying people need to have their finger on the pulse of 20-somethings to get this, one can literally walk into any store these days and see how prominent the vinyl section is compared to the CDs.

I have to admit, I'm properly excited to have Emancipation and Chaos And Disorder on vinyl. Vinyl is my go-to format, my collection of LPs runs to nearly 4,000, so I'm definitely a card-carrying Vinyl Junkie! lol And these two albums were seminal for me in my Prince fandom (I got on the boat when the Symbol came out in 92, saw Prince live for the first time on the Gold Tour in 95 at Wembley, so by 96 my obsession was at maximum...) I love these albums BECAUSE they're so messy, odd and personal.

They're really exciting records to me, with all their flaws.. it was a truly unpredictable and exciting time to be a Prince fan.... he had just changed his name to something UNPRONOUNCABLE!

NOBODY did that.... all my friends thought he was weird and nuts, which was fine by me; I thought it was ballsy and original and mysterious and it just made me all the more fascinated by the man.

I devoured these albums... to have them on my favourite format, and to fill in those gaps in the collection now in my early 40s will be amazing... NEVER thought it would happen.

Versace will be nice to have as well, of course, haha.... but it's the two 90s records that I'm really excited for.... and if they're as well mastered and pressed as the recent Sony releases, they will sound absoltely stellar!

looks like a nice package. the only thing that bothers me to no end is the purple vinyl.

why? bawl if they wanted to go for coloured vinyl at least make it album themed, so
orange for emancipation (and blue for rave, which was also very jarring in purple).

instead of looking 'special' or extra princely, these purple LPs just look weird and are
totally jarring. confused

Also - that works out to $16.50 per LP, less than you'd pay for a single LP release!
