Agree.

Not trying to sound ungrateful but Piano & A Microphone and Originals should've been just bonus discs...

Overall a very mediocre showing, Piano & A Microphone had much stronger sales in the U.S. and worldwide.

Without Tidal and deluxe/vinyl edition delayed, it would have sold better.
Maybe it has legs...

The silver lining "if" the sales are really that bad is, they will just have to release the music at a faster pace if they need more money, they certainly won't run out anytime soon.

I agree though the packaging was horrible for Originals, seems so strange to me that Piano & Mic 83 gets the royal treatment, while this one, arguable much more digestable by the masses, get the lazy treatment.

With all the coverage in the press, and the contracts and deals signed, the searching of the tapes (3000$ a tape) that cost a lot of money...All of that to be happy with less than 50.000 albums ! Manic Monday reached the 200.000 views on YouTube. That means they made like 200 dollars from this operation lol. It s a little compensation. How many copies of the album have to be sold for them to earn 200 bucks... [Edited 6/26/19 14:31pm]

You don't understand what you're talking about. You never have.

IDK what's in it for RODSERLING but there's gotta be something or he wouldn't be so determined to make that point over and over no matter what, and a Prince album could sell 20M and he'd still be at it lol It's OK, let him be, it doesn't make a difference in the end and it doesn't harm anyone I guess wink

Wow #48 on Billboard 200... Really bad showing, by next week it will almost be off the charts for sure.

Very underwhelming sales for this release.

Where do you see #48? Billboard hasn’t been updated and it’s #2 in actual sales.

Wow. Im beginning to feel a little sorry for this release (which i love btw), so sorry that you have me typing a rare one out....

Here goes.

It was released a day early in the US either by accident or design (June 20th). This appeared on LAST WEEKS billboards sales chart (not billboard 200) at #46. This equates to around 2000 sales that were not lost but certainly 'misplaced' from the 21000 estimation this weeks new chart will show(THAT chart renews tomorrow).

Now..

In their wisdom(!) the Estate has also staggered the release of all other formats until July 19th.I, myself haven't bought it yet officially but I will when the vinyl arrives. Again pure speculation but judging on PAM figures there could be 6000 or so other sales at that time.Maybe more.I m guessing of course.

The actual first weeks total would have been 29-30000 if the Estate hadn't decided on this strange(to me at least) release schedule.

As a last little observation I dont think Tidal did that much damage but some was inevitable. Then again did Jay pay more for the priviliege than we know? Money in the bank and all that...

This weeks chart details of this weeks 200 top 10 has been released. No Prince as expected but the sales estimation of number 10? 24000. They could have had a top 10 placing all day long if they had releasd properly. Theyt didnt.Maybe they will next time.Ahem

People also need to recognise just how low actual sales are now. 39000 gets you in the top 100 for the whole year to date. To date. Were o week 24 btw.

Also Prince isnt Hip Hop so his chances get less and less every year due to a skewed streaming system. That needs to inprove.Thats where the focus needs to be if Charts matter.

Good God i never post. Sorry to go on but I felt an urge to defend this release. Ihave no idea why!

the 2k early copies were probably because iTunes messed up and somehow released it a day early. They didn't even promote it as a new release until the following day, but anyoen who preordered it got it on the 20th.

It's still #2 on the sales chart for current week.

No it will not debut in the top 10 for the reason given about the strange release pattern. That was my point!

I really like your passion on the subject though. Yoiur dissapointment and obvious want for Prince to do well shines through and thats commendable. cool

Has nothing to do with passion on the subject, I've been reporting the sales figures on his albums here for years, I don't care if it sells or doesn't sell, makes no difference to me personally, just contributing to some news whenever there is a new release.

I wouldn't say it got the lazy treatment. Read the articles about how many of the songs had to be somewhat re-created to get to where it was released.

I don't mind the packaging at all. I do wish even the CD came with more "goodies", but that's how they get people to buy deluxe versions.

I don't agree.

It is not a strong showing at all, by the next week it will probably sell less than 10,000, and that's being nice...

Strange how Piano & A Microphone sold almost 15,000 more in the first week.

It lost 2000+ sales from last week's Thursday blip on iTunes (which is why it entered the Digital Sales chart at #9 last week, and will get a second top ten week on that chart this week) and we have no way of knowing how the two weeks on Tidal affected sales. Not to mention the vinyl and deluxe CDs are coming out later this month, which some fans are holding out for. You can't really make a direct comparison for this release to P&AM1983, which had an all-at-once roll-out.

On Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums it enters at #9, his 29th top ten. It also enters R&B Albums at #7 and rises to #7 on the Digital Sales chart.

It is has been said before but maybe against Prince's philosophy on albums, maybe the estate needs to make the releases mostly digital.

Originals moves to #2 this week on Billboard's Top Album Sales chart, which does not include streaming figures, just actual sales (physical or digital). That is a solid showing.

Nope. If Originals is #7 on the Digital Albums chart and #2 on the Top Album Sales chart (which includes digital and physical), that means the sales of Prince's physical CDs were much higher than those of the albums it's competing with, lifting it ahead of all but the Raconteurs.

that is because there is a physical option. I bought 2 copies of the CD (Amazon and Target) and I streamed it off Tidal (free trial) and off of YouTube... If there was no physical option I would have to subscriber to some service to listen.

Keep in mind there may be over 10K hours of content (Live, resherals, jams, and studio) that is too much to release in physical form.

Actually in this day and age it means the exact opposite. His streaming numbers are extremely low, and really don't contribute to his SPS numbers, which is why the ratio of only his physical numbers are the factor, because his streaming numbers are extremely low which ofc indicates why his phsyical sales are so "high" because 95% of the people are buying his releases and not streaming them, which is really the exact opposite of almost every artist in todays age.

For example according to Hits Daily Double chart, his first week streams only contributed to 914 sales... However if you look at the majority of the artists the ratio is the exact opposite, DJ Khaled streams equaled over 19,000 sales while his phsyical sales were only 1,000.

If Prince could get a higher ratio of streaming his numbers would double, but he joined the streaming phase way too late...

It does not mean the opposite. Again, Prince's sales were higher than those of the albums Originals is competing with.

Yes, his streaming numbers are lower, which drags the album to #15 on the Billboard 200, the chart that uses streaming data.

Artists make more money from sales than streaming. So the estate is better off selling physical copies of Prince releases than somehow trying to convince 12-year-olds to stream his music over and over again like they do with DaBaby and A Boogie wit Da Hoodie.
