On her album "Peace Beyond Passion", which was released a a week or so before the recording of the basic tracks and bass line for "Emale" (which was really just a jam session), there is a song called "God Shiva", co-written by Wendy. It's a direct reference to that.

I can’t find that song (God Shiva) anywhere. Can you provide a link? I saw the “thanks Shiva” on the Emancipation credits.

Holy crap that’s a great album!! Why have I not listened to it before? No wonder Prince was raving about her back then. Wendy plays on Bittersweet and Mary Magdalene too. Such great music!!

Co-written by Wendy Melvoin?? Did Prince write “thanks Shiva” in credits for Emale?

Yes on both counts. Lisa also plays on the "Peace Beyond Passion" album and I believe co-write stuff on there too but I may be wrong. I do know they're both all over the album and its followup.

Wendy and Lisa are also heavily involved in the next album, "Bitter". My 2nd favorite album of hers.

Sidenote: MeShell was originally slated to be signed to Paisley Park but she turned them down because she didn't want to be making "Prince records" and wanted her own thing but just be signed.

Maverick and Madonna gave Meshell free reign.

She was later featured on one of the issues of NPG Magazine - I belive the first issue. I wish I still had mine. They later had a falling out when he was an asshole to her during his "you better get free and get off the plantation" kick he had with other artists.

Wendy and Lisa have quite the resume for contributions with great artists - Me’Shell, Seal, Madonna, Neil Finn, Sheryl Crow and more. This is why I always laugh when a few on this site try to say that they contributed very little to Prince’s music and sound. They did a lot for/with him. He confirmed that by dedicating In This Bed I Scream to them.

Me’Shell made the right choice. I think her music would have been “Princified” had she signed with the PP label. He always wanted more control. He mentioned her in interviews during the mid 90’s, raving about her music. Love that she made sure to protect her own style. I think Prince meant well when he was on the “stay away from labels” soapbox, but he was rubbing some folks the wrong way - even though he was right. Hopefully, he reconciled with her before he passed.

They didn't. She spoke of him very bitterly (no pun intended) up until he passed.

She posted this exactly 2 years before his passing, 3 days after the announcement of the new WB deal:

Wow! Posted on April 21st too, exactly 2 yrs before he passed. This must have been a rough time for him. Many past associates had begun to speak out and tell their stories - and were no longer sugar-coating their experience. Two major Biographies were released with more detailed information.

He hit a lot of flack for using the “slave” analogy during his fight with WB, and ended up having to publicly back-peddle and try to explain his intent. He lost a big chunk of his following during that mid 90’s period.
