Please, no, not a statue... sad I'd much prefer memorials, without an actual statue of the man. Even better: schools named after him. . Prince was an artist constantly exploring new directions, always working, always moving, changing. Exactly the opposite of statues. But if you really want a statue, at least please make sure it has nothing to do with Purple Rain. He was soooo much more than that. . And why in Henderson of all places?
Wow people just cant be happy for eachother. Its not about you and its not about what you want and what you prefer. Maybe just be happy a fellow orger got selected for something special?

.
I know it's easier to attack someone than trying to participate in a meaningful discussion, but perhaps read my posts before you falsely accuse me of talking about myself. I was talking about art and Prince.
.
If this statue will be anything like this horribly amateur and kitsch drawing that was just posted above (it looks like a pointless copy of photos that someone projected onto paper), then my fears are absolutely justified. This is certainly NOT the right approach to create a public(!) memorial to one of the greatest artists ever.

I only hope that the face will look like Prince.

Most of them mess up his eyes and that's very noticeable to me. This artist isn't too bad but doesn't have it down to a science confused

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

If there is to be a statue built, I'd like to see one where he's in a striking guitar pose with the guitar positioned to be pointing toward Paisley Park. Like a compass.

We're all on a message board made for the sole purpose of discussing an artist that we all deeply love, who spent decades performing for throngs of adoring fans who paid money to hear his playing and his message in person, many of them wearing shirts adorned by his face... and some of you really think a posthumous statue is "idolatry" and "going too far"? Is the irony seriously lost on you people? lol

Yes. Yes, it is.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Because Henderson is where the "Lake Minnetonka" scenes in Purple Rain were shot.

I'm surprised the current self-appointed arbiter of all things true and appropriate regarding Prince doesn't know that.

smile Thank you darling, what a lovely comment again.
FYI: My primary interest is Prince's music and legacy – not filming locations of Purple Rain or what socks he wore.

And yet, here you are - concerning yourself with commenting on a statue you will make it a point never to see because it is just so, so beneath you - and shaming the artist chosen to create it.

And no, it will not be beneath me, but judging by the drawings I've now seen from the guy, the statue will most likely be beneath artistic standards generally expected from a creator of a publicly(!) displayed statue. And again, this is not about me, neither is about the guy – it's about aesthetics, and that is something taught in art schools, not just a question of individual tastes.

Aesthetics are utterly subjective. You think art schools are impartial judges of what is aesthetically pleasing? Which "art school" is the supreme authority? And how do you square that with the idea that art is about challenging established aesthetics?

Who died and made you the Prince of Aesthetics, anyway?

Cool. Arguing against it is idiotic. I swear, some of you must want to put Prince, his music and legacy in a time capsule and open it in 50 years.

(Insert something clever here)
