does anyone sell well today?

U2 and Coldplay for instance still sell in the millions.
Much less then before streaming but still they sell millions of CD's/LP's when they release something new.

I know in the states only 1 or 2 albums a year sell one million, and during the last three years that has generally been soundtracks (The Greatest Showman and A Star is born). The only way any artist gets decent numbers here is to give concert ticket buyers an option to download their newly released album, and I think there is no extra cost for this. This really helped Pink last year and Madonna get to #1 last week.

Apparently there are other countries where streaming has eaten up the CD/download market as much, but it still is eroding everywhere.

Frankly Sony Legacy really paid 30 millions for the 1995/2010 catalogue? Lol
How can they expect to recover the money invested?
The physical re releases this year (Musicology, Rave, etc) sold so poorly they stopped their plan to go further ( it was supposed to be 3 release a month during until the end of the year!)
.
On Spotify and YouTube, their biggest hit are respectively Black Sweat with 1.8 millions stream and Call My Name with 4 millions.
Musicology and Gold do decent numbers, but the other tracks figures are abyssal.

And I don't think they can license his music nobody knows in movies, tv, video games, etc. That s way too late for that.

It should trigger a rethink of their profit maximization strategy.

That could yield different instructions for Michael 'expen$ive' Howe.

OTOH: these numbers could be used against the IRS to mark down the perceived value of the inheritance.

Hopefully it will. Maybe then they will open up, be transparant and consult the years of info and research done and stop making cheap looking 90's bootleg quality releases like Originals. I love the music but the presentation is just embarassing, cheap and not worthy of a artist of Prince's calliber.
A solid release strategy constisting of audio, video and printed material all connected to a specific album or era would be the least and even the most basic thing to do. Throw in a streaming service cataloguing all his live shows, rehearsals and whatever to beat bootleggers would be a no-brainer.

I have not been keeping up with the actual news, but my memory tells me that once Londell McMuffin got involved, he struck the deal without having a single F&&KING clue what he was selling, who he was selling it to, and just wanted his commission for letting some intern actually handle everything. He is a money hungry stooge who has no real love for Prince. So Universal thought they were getting everything, and I think they got their 30 million back, while Stooge McMuffin is fighting to keep whatever he thinks he deserves for either lying or just being a complete idiot with less intelligence than a bag of rocks.

[Snip - luv4u]

After their failures, we could all band together, and buy all the unreleased stuff for $10 million when the powers that be are out of money and patience with it...but it would not be easy lol

This is where the revisionist history starts to come in.

Many of Prince's latter-day releases had almost the same level of quality in regards to packaging. Planet Earth was weak (the hologram was cool, the corset was not), Lotusflow3r artwork was cool but the packaging was not great, and even the two Hit N Run CDs were not all that great packaging.

In the case of Planet Earth, the music itself was not all that "top caliber" either.

I think the artwork for 4Ever, P&M were really cool. I loved the silver effect on Purple Rain Deluxe. Originals - yes - could have been a bit better, but not out of the realm of something Prince himself might do.

My guess is that they are putting out ‘meh’ collections to fulfill contracts and bide time to sort through all the finished music prince was sitting on ... why else would the put out songs that were found on cassettes ... then had to be fresh mixed from multi trax ... there has to be a pile of master tapes with several completed high quality master mixes all ready to go ... many have mentioned as much ... so these tunes all seem like scraps to me .. it holds interest but lacks the wow factor of a prince mixed mastered fully formed song

I think From Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, Lotus Flow3r, and 20Ten, Prince was on a huge hot streak. Sure, there were some clunkers on all of those, though I still consider Disc 1 of Lotus as his last great masterpiece...If I wanted to haggle, I would say those six discs could be turned into 3 disc of stunning albums...but yes, it is revisionist history....but I loved his studio output...his concerts were a mixed bag at that point..you might get a great show, you might get Prince going through the motions with Shelby shouting "Put Your Hands Up" over and over sad

I don't really care about the packaging or covers, but the cover for Originals is pretty bad, and Hit N Run art was pretty awful.

I don't know, man. As a plain and simple music lover, this is, to my ears, a great CD. Sure, I like some other unreleased versions of these tunes more. In a way. But in a way, I'm happy to have better quality versions that I haven't heard before.

That's pretty much all I have to say. Except: big love to BVH for his constant links to reviews and niche information, and to Neversin for his unparalleled background info.

I wasn't a huge fan of the silver metallic ink added to Purple Rain deluxe, and the booklet was full of photo outtakes from one session, which seemed lazy. All of it was better than the "remastered" album, though.

Agree with you on everything else, but I'll point out that the Planet Earth cover wasn't a hologram, but rather a printing method called lenticular printing to achieve the illusion of depth in the cover photo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/...r_printing

As for the packaging on Originals, it seems on par for what I would expect when buying an $11.99 CD at Target. It could have contained more details information about the tracks themselves, but as far as a digipak goes, it's OK.

Originals is now the 6th most highly rated Prince album at RateYourMusic, trailing only Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times, 1999, Dirty Mind, and Parade. It seems it is has appeal beyond just Prince fans.

Yep, it has sold 16 million so far, lots of people buying it. Just saw a CNN special on it with Wolf Blister interviewing Susan Rogers....I even heard one guy at Target tell me he had never heard a song without Autotune until he bought Originals by mistake. Oh uh, urr...maybe not.

I would hope it has some appeal beyond Prince fans, but let's face it, by a miracle it will move 50,000. 20,000 or so is more like it. As much as I want this to be a smash, it probably won't be. I don't ever look at Rate Your Music, but if it is behind Parade, Dirty Mind...albums with low sales numbers even back then, what does that mean? Probably not much. And just think, SOTT has such a high rating there, and it sold what? 500,000 from 1987 to 2015? And yes, it got its platinum status as double albums counted as 2 items.

Just think, there is no single on the radio...there is some good press, but nothing seems to suggest it is flying off the shelves. I hope I'm wrong, as a bunch of clunker sales could slam the vault shut before we get to the good stuff.

That is not correct, SOTT did not get counted as a double album according to the RIAA.

It has sold over 4 million copies world wide and over 1 million in the U.S. alone.

These are the most recent sales figures provided by Chart Masters, keep in mind the RIAA has failed to recertify many of Prince's albums, that is the record company and estates job to press the RIAA on that, which they don't.

RateYourMusic is kind of like a music version of IMDB - users rate albums, singles, EPs, etc. according to their preference and aggregate scores are used to rank them.

Its high score suggests that the consensus view among the userbase is that Originals is the best Prince album since 1987.

It says nothing about sales, which is a different think altogether, but it does suggest that Originals is being enjoyed outside of the Prince fanbase.

I don;t get the revisionist history part. Prince was around when all those albums you mentioned were released and he himself signed off on those. Those packages had era appropriate artwork unlink Originals. The people running the Estate aren't Prince so I don't see how they should pretend to be him and sign off on bad artwork and packaging. They could at least look at other artists of his caliber (box)sets and see how it's done instead of these cheap bootleg looking thing like Originals.

Hello everyone smile

Maybe some of you remember me, maybe some of you don’t. I certainly recognise a few names (hello June7, luv4u, Mars23, etc.).

Anyhoo, I contribute to a music blog – probably the coolest new music blog none of you are reading yet.

Today, I collated some thoughts on this LP and posted the review.

Given the good ol’ Org is a pretty legit fan site, I figured you’d like to read it, and would appreciate any thoughts.

Three years after the death of Prince, Troy Carter and team continue to mine through his legendary vault of unreleased material, now transferred to a secure facility in Los Angeles in lieu of the sub-standard, damp conditions of its original location at Prince’s studio-cum-home, Paisley Park.

read the rest here.

Lots of love.

You mention Vanity 6 when it should be Apollonia 6.
