@ OldFriends4Sale - overall I think you're proving your point that there wasn't nearly as much swearing in Prince's music as people's perceptions lead them to believe.

And I agree that talking about sex isn't the same thing as swearing (e.g. "masterbating with a magainze" isn't cursing).

However, you're stretching it a bit when you say "dick" and "pussy" aren't swear words. Like you, I don't consider sex vlugar and I have no problem with those words. (In fact, I think the entire idea of "swear/curse words" is ridiculous.) But the fact remains, most people do consider those to be swear words. The english language is the ultimate democracy -- the conotation of words (along with the definition, spelling, etc.) is determined by usage, not an authority or even logic. And based on usage, "dick" and "pussy" are curse words.

But again, even if you count those two words, your point is still appears to be valid: Prince didn't swear as much as people think. So rather than get dragged into a debate over what is and isnt' a swear word -- and be accused of rationalizing -- you should concede, for the sake of argument, that all of those terms are swear words -- in doing so you'd still win the argument.

...though you did miss the swear words in Rock Hard in a Funky Place. You may have missed some others.

Well I did try to open the discussion about those words. Where is the discussion. A lot of people trying to correct the hard work I put in. Like the thread that would pop up asking for people to post a spiritual song or a political song etc people would just throw out any song without thought.
.
I never thought of them as curse words. Curse words were: Fuck, Damn, Ass, Shit, Bitch.
Actually saying "Hell" was considered a curse/swear word too.
.
In my family we actually had conversations about these words. So I'm not really stretching anything. I mean we (with mom and dad) were at the conclusion that those words: F D A S were nothing bad about them, but peoples issues of descency. You used them in appropriate settings. When watchign comedians back then there were the ones who would use 'swear' words but it never came across as 'bad. Then you had the ones were it just registered as vulgar. I even had a science teacher tell us people curse because their vocabulary is limited. So there is a lot of drama around 'curse' words. Why do we even call them 'curse' words.

.

Pussy and Dick were always 'vulgar slang' terms not curse words, because of sexuality. Sexual language was always in a different catagory. Fuck had a foot under the 'curse' catagory and the 'sexual' slang catagory. I even heard a man correct someone who asked his nephew if he had to pee, the guy got indignant, and said "you should say 'use the bathroom'" I still know of people who have a problem with 'fart', these words are 'vulgar' to many because they come from the sexual areas. And deal with descency. So don't say 'fart' say 'passed gas'.

https://ell.stackexchange...word-pussy

.

I didn't miss it in RHIAFP, I said it didn't register.
The topic was about Prince 'swearing' so like on Superfunki's opening club scene when Cat says 'see those fucking pumps' I didn't count that. Nor did I think of Tony M.

.

I mean, when you have certain words said in almost obscurity, on the faded fade of the end(it also wasn't released in the 80s so that is a technicality lol) Adore's 'not fuckin for tricks' was not even

bleeped on the radio because they weren't hearing 'fuckin' through his falsetto. I never really heard what he said there as well. I remember the radio station back in 84 justifing not bleeping Erotic City by saying they heard 'Funk' which according to Sheila E, she was saying Funk.

.

I'm not trying to win anything, just trying to stir up vigorous conversation. And look at what is really there. We did something like this some years back, but looking at why the parental label would be placed on every Prince album after Tipper Gore. Prince was forever labelled, based on the word Masturbation (and as even you see members in this thread are seeing masturbation as a 'swear' word and used it as an example of why Prince DID curse a lot) so we sorta have to debate this. I get the quick fickle debates on FB groups. This is the Org lol
.
It's always too easy for Prince fans to say all he sang about was God & Sex and curse. And too many are only focusing on particular time periods. I want people to take the time, hell just take an album and research through it. Have a more academic discussion. Let's go deep.

.

I actually took the time, listened through each song, while reading through the lyrics from 1978-1989 including the B sides/long versions. I haven't done the protege albums yet, and I will invest the same time. But because it isn't Prince singing I'll probably skip them.

I guess in a similar manner you can make the claim that Prince didn't actually make alot of religious songs because, even though there's religious elements sprinkled all over his work, there's only a handful of songs that explicitly center around God.

Compared to other artists that do entire gospel albums, that's nothing. lol

I agree, I've said that before.

People think all of his music was about the conflict of Sex & God. And it wasn't

They site him using the Our Father quote in Controversy as conflict. Yet it isn't

There are whole albums that don't even bring up any direct or obvious religious tone.

I was joking.

Prince cursed alot in the mid 90s and live but his songs are also dirty af even without curse words. Similar, Prince leaned hard on religion in his early work but alot of his songs have religious concepts even if it isn't as explicit as a direct gospel song.

But it is true about the religious aspect of things

I'm mean do the same with his albums and GOd/religion

He might have made a reference to God-ish stuff here or there, but you really didn't get a lot of it.
.
And did we really hear 'conflict' from 1978-1982? The only place I started hearing the use of conflict was on the Purple Rain tour 'Temptation' piano segment. Which then was turned into the album cut on ATWIAD. Then jump over to Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge.

.

There were no religious stuff on these three below

.

FOR YOU
1. For You2. In Love

3. Soft And Wet

4. Crazy You

5. Just As Long As We're Together

6. Baby

7. My Love Is Forever

8. So Blue

9. I'm Yours

- no curse words

PRINCE
1.I Wanna Be Your Lover
2.Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
3.Sexy Dancer
4.When We're Dancing Close And Slow
5.With You
6.Bambi
7.Still Waiting
8.I Feel For You
9.It's Gonna Be Lonely

DIRTY MIND

1. Dirty Mind

2. When U Were Mine

3. Do It All Night
4. Got A Broken Heart Again

5. Uptown
6. Head

7. Sister

8. Party Up

.

And Controversy had nothing really outside of the song Controversy, and a play on words and concepts in Anne Christian as evil in the world.

.

1. 1999
2. Little Red Corvette
3. Delirious
4. Let's Pretend We're Married

5. D.M.S.R.

6. Automatic
7. Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)
8. Free

9. Lady Cab Driver
10. All the Critics Love U In New York
11. International Lover

1999 based on Nastradamus prediction(not the bible)

and at the of LPWM all all songs he says : I'm in love with God, he's the only way
'Cuz you and I know we gotta die some day. But there was no conflict there either.

.

Parade has no direct religious expression. Unless we use Venus de Milo. Venus did have some kind of connection to the movie Under the Cherry Moon. Christopher talking to the goddess of love etc and the devil in Mountains, and the devil running from chords in Christopher Tracy's Parade

.

Black Album has none, SOTT the title cut is mostly about societal commentary, and then the Cross.

.

Now I agree, it was turned up in the 1990s as far as vulgarity, and different directions of religiosity showed up. Exploring more Islamic and Egyptology that later would be intermixed with Jehovah's Witness doctrine.

.

By 2001 cursing was out and JW doctrinal ideals increased and sexuality was tamed and made 'undefiled by the marriage bed'

.

Hey joking or not, I don't think I've been in any vigorous conversations about the music like this since before Prince passed away. Maybe it's the leading up to June 7th that is affecting me. But I'm welcoming this thread and enjoying it. So thank you.

I never felt he cursed a lot in his music. Same with interviews. How many pre 2000s interviews did he give where he actually swore in them? Read an interview with someone like Dave Grohl and practically every other word is a curse word. lol

On the list above it seems you might be going with lyric sheets instead of the actual lyrics... and other hidden forms of “swear” such as “p.u.s.s.y.” in New Position.

In “adore” does he say funkin or fucking?

ufoclub, I didn't even have to do the extense of what I did, just to have people pick it apart.
The facts so far remain. Now when you or someone else does the same extensive review of 1990-1999 an 2000-2015 then we can move forward instead of knit picking P U S S Y

.

that's all been covered

post 34, 56

.

I'm mean everyone is reaching for that spelling of P U S S Y etc lol it still does not prove Prince swore a lot in his music...

Not only that, why isn't anyone especially the fans of the 1990s music, following suit and reviewing this latter albums...

One of Prince's BIGGEST songs from the Purple Rain era was Erotic City. Everyone knew it and sung it.

Sure the lyrics indicate that he didn't say "fuck", but we all know that he did.

Just another technicality. wink

Graffiti Bridge
.
1. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got

2. New Power Generation

3. The Question Of U

4. Elephants & Flowers

5. We Can Funk - George Clinton (he says Pee a lot and) You got electric ass baby

6. Joy In Repetition

7. Tick, Tick, Bang

8. Thieves In The Temple

9. Still Would Stand All Time

10. Graffiti Bridge

11. New Power Generation (Pt. II)

.

outside of We Can Funk which is voiced by G Clinton not Prince, Graffiti Bridge does not seem to have any 'curse' words of 'vulgar slang'

If you know of some, cut in past the Prince tracks and review on your own post.

If you think it doesn’t matter either way then why even bother posting on a thread you claim to care nothing about?? Seems quite pointless, like so many posts on this site.
