Sorry to say but setting up top50 lists without purple rain while mentioning songs like lisa, hello and loveleftloveright clearly shows me some ppl really dont have a clue what they are talking about away from all the musical taste discussions.

Seriously, is it that hard to just let people like what they like? I love “Purple Rain” too. It’s just that I love the other songs I posted more.

This place is too toxic it seems to just celebrate what we love about the man’s music.

I consider 'Purple Rain' to be overrated and barely ever play the song. In many respects both the song and album were an albatross for Prince and from my perspective, not particularly representative of his career as a whole. 'Sign 'O' Times' however, I find to be a far superior album and an excellent example of what Prince was really all about in terms of styles, sound and themes.

Whatever, there are gems throughout Prince's career and only two or three of my top 50 would originate from the Purple Rain album.

Hell, I even put PR on my list because I felt obligated to do so. This forum would banish me to the outskirts if I didn't.

Again, tha's the beauty with Prince's music, it's not predictive in any way.
Take Moonbeam's compiled song list from 2017 as voted by us. If you give that list to a total newbie and you as him/her. "So, what do you think will be number 1" their response would likely be "Purple Rain! I know it! Purple Rain!" And then *Baam*

"Huh?!?!?! What is this, what's If I was Your Girlfriend? Where's Purple Rain? What is this Erotic City song?! Can you name a song like that? Where's Purple Rain? Girls & Boys, never heard of it. Where's Purple Rain! D.M.S.R? What does that stand for. Purple Rain at number 12! You guys are Hipsters!!"

No, we're Princefans. And I love it!

i agree 100%
"Little Red Corvette"
"When you were mine"
"When doves Cry"
"Condition of the heart"
"The beautiful Ones"
"I could never take the place of your man"
should all be on any top 50 best Prince songs

True. I've done as instructed. They are all present.

I've kept mine to just commercially released tracks versions.
Otherwise the 2009 Montreux Empty Room would be Top 20.

This is actually a lot harder to do than I thought, but fun.
Keeping to 50 - Actually impossible. I apologise to: Pop Life, I Wish U Heaven, DMSR, Lady Cab Driver, Girls & Boys, Vicki Waiting and a shedload of others.

Putting them in order - Nose bleed impossible.
I reserve the right to jiggle them about. And the order.

I was tempted to put Solo as No.1 just to see all the abuse.

1 She's Always in My Hair (Ext. Version)
2 Erotic City
3 The Beautiful Ones
4 When Doves Cry
5 Around the world In A Day
6 Condition of the Heart
7 Sign of the Times
8 Joy in Repetition
9 Anna Stesia
10 The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
11 Crystal Ball
12 Dance For Me
13 Do it all Night
14 When you were Mine
15 Paisley Park
16 Colonized Mind
17 Dirty Mind
18 Uptown
19 Gotta Broken Heart Again
20 Dark
21 Little Red Corvette
22 How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?
23 Thieves in the Temple
24 1999
25 The Love We Make
26 Fury
27 It
28 Pheromone
29 Dear Mr. Man
30 The Exodus Has Begun
31 I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
32 The Ladder
33 I Wanna Be Your Lover
34 The Question of U
35 Interactive
36 Solo
37 When the Lights Go Down
38 The Truth
39 Welcome 2 the Dawn
40 Alphabet St.
41 Controversy
42 Kiss
43 Willing & Able
44 And God Created Woman
45 Gold
46 In This Bed I Scream
47 Holy River (until it becomes a Bohemian Rhapsody parody)
48 Wasted Kisses
49 Beginning Endlessly
50 X's Face

I think for me and a lot of us, it is a tribute to Prince that we could have made this a top 100 and still had battles with ourselves over what to leave in or out. Think of how many artists just have a couple of songs you like or a dozen songs that stand out but so many that mean nothing to you at all.

You can only start to grasp the WDC genius when you've heard the non-Originals yet original version with the bassline and much more.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
