SPIKE LEE, PRINCE ESTATE SUED 'GIRL 6' THEME COPIED MY SONG

https://www.tmz.com/2019/...ringement/

Fresh off his very first Oscar win, Spike Lee's got a new legal headache ... over one of his movies from the '90s and a Prince song.

Longtime friends Prince and Spike teamed up for his 1996 flick, "Girl 6" ... with Prince writing and performing the title song for the soundtrack. According to a lawsuit filed by James Brandon, that track jacked one of his songs.

Why?
Because it contains musical notes, of which there actually are not that many?

Prince did not write the music for that song, just the lyrics.

Tommy Barbarella is responsible for the music and Kirk the drum programming. Prince wrote the lyrics and performed vocals. The 'Girl 6' spoken parts originate from the actual film.

In addition, this guy has tried to make this case unsuccessfully twice before, so a bit of a non-story.

No. This is going on for years.

And Girl 6 is a total ripoff of that song. I would have sued prince, too.

"Girl6" STAYED in my playlist FOREVER! The beat is intoxicating & Prince's(r.i.p.) layered vocals are unmatched.

So Prince, whom fought 4 his first record deal & got it, fought 4 a movie deal & got it, fought 4 freedom from his WB contract & got it, fought 4 his masters & got them.Gets a curable illness & says 2 himself ok, I'm done. "Life is a Box Of Chocolates"

I just listened to it – it is a perfectly legit case indeed. The song 'Girl 6' is obviously built on the groove of 'Phone Sex', it copies the refrain ("girl six"="phone sex"), it even copies the repeated, wailing D note in the background. Guilty as charged.

I mean, you can literally google the song he's supposed to have copied and listen to it, but apparently such extensive research is too much trouble for some.

.

Then again, there are fans who claim Prince never sampled anyone.

When you say 'he's supposed to have copied' do you mean Tommy, as he was apparently responsible for the music

The complete OST definitely stays with WB anyway, and I don't see WB making it a priority.

IIRC Prince had managed to keep the masters for the title track, which was (p) NPG Records (I'd have to double check that, though), but it was credited to the NPG, and IDK if Legacy has any rights to the NPG records, and the fact that it was used on a WB OST anyway might make things complicated...

My guess is that that song was already in legal limbo without that lawsuit.

Again, Prince was not responsible for the music on 'Girl 6' - Tommy Barbarella was. Prince added lyrics and vocals based on a demo Tommy presented him from his home studio. Even the drum programming was done by Kirk. This was a fairly rare (at least for that era) collaborative piece, but if anybody needs to be sued it would be Tommy.

And the source of 'Phone Sex' would obviously be Spike himself.

Tommy was in a band called Greazy Meal and his song "Old Soul Cafe" sounds just like Girl 6. They were both released in 1996

nod Yeah, the way you broke it down sounds much more believable.I don't believe that Prince "ripped anyone off" and I still doubt that he even heard the "Phone Sex" demo.
