I’m still curious to know how much they rehearsed. Some stories suggest not much because Geoff Lynne’s guitarist kept playing over Prince’s part. But Paul Shaffer claims the whole thing was rehearsed. confused

It looks like the image is snapshot taken from a monitor. I wonder if it’s part of behind the scenes video?

Surely the 'whole thing' wasn't rehearsed, with the likes of his showboating leaning back from the stage and being held up by his bodyguard. Dhani Harrison looks happily surprised.

.

I'm sure a recent interview, possibly Morris Hayes, said something along the lines of him playing it safe in rehearsal but then surprising them and letting loose in the real show.

.

This is a great shot anyway, be cool if some video surfaces

They tried to over ride him in rehearsal but during the show he surprised them when he took center stage. biggrin

Also Dhani has had a couple of terse things to say (now) about how Prince stole the show.

Yeah The NY Times story had Geoff Lynne’s guitar player kind of stepping on Prince’s toes and supposedly Prince told Tom Petty don’t worry about this I got it, I’ll be ready. My guess is Shaffer wants to make it seem like it as all worked out in rehearsal because he was the musical director for the performance. I love the part where Prince is ready to let it rip and he looks over at Petty who gives him an approving nod to go for it.

Yes, I was surprised by Dhani's recent comments since he was smiling and nodding at P on stage and at the end he can be heard saying 'where's Prince'

Dhani made it seem he was acting as a' shield' between Jeff(Geoff?)/Tom and Prince.

He may have thought the guitar toss was gratuitous and a bit grand-standing...Trying to see both sides.

I wonder if he was annoyed because this was a performance honoring his dad but after Prince died all anyone focused was Prince’s solo. Of course I understand why. The performance outside of Prince’s solo is pretty boring.

Cee lo Green has a good take on this performance. There is a YouTube clip of him talking about it. I’m not remembering his exact words, but something to the effect that they may have been slacking him behind his back and he showed them what’s what.

I heard that, too. Cee lo said it was real "Rock n Roll." Something must have been up though Prince seemed to admire Petty as shown by his eye contact, smiling and sort of rocking out together during the solo.

In a perfect world, I would have preferred Prince to have stayed, shaken their hands and let the solo speak for itself. The tribute was for George Harrison.

But if you look at other Prince performances, he has tossed his guitar to the techs in those too. It seemed to just be his thing he did, not special for that performance, although those outside his fan base might think it was grandiose! (I think when you are known to leave immediately after the performance, you would want to know your instrument is in good hands prior to.)

Remember the song line..." but not like I love my guitar."

Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

According to the paper, the show’s producer, Joel Gallen, asked Prince to play the song’s solos, since he was there to be inducted anyway. But during rehearsals, Marc Mann, who plays guitar with Lynne, took over, knocking out a note-perfect recreation of Eric Clapton’s original mid-song solo.

There wasn’t time to get it right, but Prince assured Gallen everything would be fine at the performance. He told the producer to let Mann take the first solo, and he would perform the extended outro solo. “They never rehearsed it, really,” Gallen says. “Never really showed us what he was going to do, and he left, basically telling me, the producer of the show, not to worry.

“And the rest is history. It became one of the most satisfying musical moments in my history of watching and producing live music.”

I think he was so handsome during that performance (with the red hat), but I also really like him in glasses.

I wonder if he needed glasses or if they were fashion accessories?

Professor Prince in his glasses...

Didn't Dhani make his remarks during the time when Tom Petty was being honored by MusiCares? I felt that the coverage of the RNRHOF performance, most notabley Prince's showstopping solo and showmanship, somehow diminished Petty's legacy as a guitarist. Maybe "diminished" is not the best word, but Prince's star was just so freaking bright that it just rendered everyone else on that stage to the ranks of, pretty much, mere mortals in the presence of a guitar GOD. That made me think that Dhani was trying counter that by trying to cast Prince in a bad light because of his, well, badass-ness. By the way, I don't think he would have dared make those remarks if Prince had still been alive.
