They're hardly going to honour or him with uniforms inspired by Goldnigga or the Black Album. If they're trying to honour his legacy, it makes sense that they do it with an album people have heard of. And unfortunately, Purple Rain is pretty much the only album that most non fans would be familiar with.

I actually think Black Album uniforms would be a good idea. I was only being sarcastic at first but now I've had time to think about it, I think it would be kind of cool. No name, number or anything. Just plain black uniforms.

Of course. They are honoring him by using imagery from his crowning achievment both commercially and artistically. Would you be more pleased if they'd based their uniforms on the fucking Arms Of Orion single art? Jesus.

Which of course is not true. You named two of Prince's more obscure releases. Well done.

I could have named Lovesexy or Under The Cherry Moon but despite us fans being very familiar with those albums, the general public would not know of those anyore than they would The Black Album or Goldnigga.

You ever heard of the quiz show "Pointless"? There was a question on that show where they asked the contestants to name any Prince album and of the 100 people surveyed, only 60 or 70 people even knew of Purple Rain. In fact, zero people had ever heard of albums such as 3121, Planet Earth or any of his more recent albums. And of the 100 people, less than 30 of them knew more than one album. That album being Purple Rain. In other words, Prince's body of work is unknown to most non fans. Therefore, if any of his albums is being singled out for tribute, it's going to be the one people know.

A few things:

1. I am not debating that Purple Rain is THE monumental commercial achievement of Prince's career. An estimated 25 million sold worldwide, it is one of the biggest selling albums ever. Still, Prince has sold from 100-150 million albums worldwide...even if you subtract Purple Rain from those numbers, he remains one of the best selling artists of all time. Point being, despite the quiz show anecdote, the general public are familar with other Prince albums, 1999, Batman, Diamonds and Pearls, Sign O' The Times, etc. His stack of platinum and multi platinum albums that are't Purple Rain seems to support this. No?

-

2. This team literally plays in the heart Minneapolis across the street from First Ave. The hometown crowd full of "the general public" would have been open to the color schemes/themes of Prince's other era/albums. I suspect the NBA marketing department just went with the obvious Purple Rain font/color scheme. Not surprising.

...and the entire roster was relieved they didn't choose Dirty Mind, which would somehow be worse than going full monty with a nod to Lovesexy.

1. There's a big difference between 100 million and 150 million. And I don't think Prince is anywhere near 150 million album sales. And even if he was, most of those sales were in the 80s. The quiz show "anecdote" shows that those albums are not well remembered by the general public who were alive at that time.

2. Following on from point 1, and taking your point about the NBAs marketing department into consideration, if older people aren't even all that familiar with Prince's output, then younger people (the ones who are more likely to buy these replica jerseys) would likely struggle to name more than 1 of his albums. And that album is Purple Rain. So Purple Rain is the ONLY choice when it comes to these types of deals.

I have known a few none Prince fans and they could name more than just Purple Rain. Sign O The Times, 1999, D&P. Thats four albums for starters. To be fair i struggle to name more than one album of bands and groups i have never followed.

Exactly.

Prince has had a number of strong albums, but the one that really made his name is Purple Rain.
More to the point, more than any other, the film that shares its name is very much an homage to Minnesota.

There's a larger world out there than Prince zealots, or even people who can rattle off Sign o' the Times, Batman & 1999. The NBA is courting that world - not the obsessives who might want a Rainbow Children inspired uniform.

I think some of u are going by music/albums vs the style of uniform in question

.

And the PR era style is still represented in the Controversy-1999 look, the ATWIAD look and even in some Parade. by the way the cut off shirt with buttons is popular, and the PR look is in the SOTT and Lovesexy look. And as intricate the designs styles and patterns, its probably easier to duplicate knowingly vs the 1991-1995 look

.

There wasn't a definative Gold exp look, a lot of cool stuff and a lot of 'naw' stuff. And between 1997-1998 nothing so defining for a special uniform.

.

Between 2001-2009 a lot of suites and hearkens to the 1982-1985 period.

.

The P-inspired Timberwolves uniform actually doesn't look bad, when you see it in full. Definitely not an insult, like many P tributes tend to be. Not bad at all.

"The Wolves will wear the jerseys eight times this season, five at home. The in-arena trappings at those home games -- giveaway shirts, signage, lighting -- will turn purple. Tom Thibodeau, the team's coach and general manager, even let team officials take the players for a separate day of shooting to prepare a special Prince- and purple-themed pregame video that will run on the scoreboard -- not a small concession if you know Thibodeau."

"As yet unannounced halftime performers will pay tribute to Prince, and the broader Minneapolis music scene, team officials say. The team will present donations to some of Prince's favorite charities."

They really seem to be going all out. If I were anywhere near the area, I would certainly try to catch a game.

Minnesota Timberwolves unveil Prince-inspired uniform

CAPTION: The new City Edition Minnesota Timberwolves uniform, honoring the legacy of the late rock star Prince, is unveiled Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, in Chanhassen, Minn.

CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Timberwolves are paying tribute to Prince with a purple-highlighted uniform.

The team Thursday unveiled Prince-inspired City Edition uniforms. The new look uniforms were created in collaboration between the Timberwolves, Nike and the Prince estate.

Prince family members say the ''Purple Rain'' superstar enjoyed basketball from a young age, both as a player and fan.

The new jersey includes a paisley leaf in tribute to Prince's Paisley Park studio, the letters ''MPLS'' recognizing the Minneapolis Sound and purple touches.

The Timberwolves also plan to recognize and donate to nonprofits that advance causes that were important to Prince.

Minnesota will debut the new uniform on Nov. 16 when the Timberwolves face the Portland Trail Blazers at Target Center. The Wolves will wear the uniforms eight times during the regular season.
