Both songs, Life O' & Illusion, have in common that I really don't like the first seconds.
And yeah: I don't like Candy's vocals on Life O' either (sorry Candy).
But Prince's vocal performance, the beat, and the horns are just funky!
And I just adore the funky guitar playing on Illusion!!! Just unbelievable! Makes me just love the song for that.

'Life O' The Party' may is among his worst lyrically for sure. They seemed to have so much fun playing it live, that I didn't cringe quite as hard when I'd hear it at the live shows.

I always liked 'Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance,' tho.

Live sucked too. I felt they could have been doing another badass song instead of this circus song and creating one onstage.

Oddly enough, I like both. Learned to like Life O The Party after hearing it on Orange Park Radio.

I also dislike Musicology.

Life of the Party is horrible. I dislike it so much it puts me off listening to the Musicology album. On the other hand, ICPC is great! It's one of his better light-hearted funk tracks - whatever he's impersonating with the voice is brilliant and the guitar is just incredibly funky!

Pshaw, as the old folks used to say--don't apologize for what you like. If you like it, enjoy it! I'm getting to the age where I don't give a fuck if anybody else enjoys what I like. razz lol

I despise life of the party and don't believe it sounds better live. It is horrible.

I do like ICPC and Get on the Boat is a unacknowledged gem with the coolest bridge.

IMHO.

These 2 ruin the Musicology album for me, bloody awful vocal from Candy D, thin sounding funk, inane lyrics just YUK!

Life of the Party life scrubs up0 better with the JB horns motif though!

The Musicology era was brilliant! The 2 songs you mentioned were a bit below par compared to others but I wouldn't go as far as despising them!😎✌❤

Life O' the Party never worked for me (although live when it was mashed up with that James Brown track is another story), but I absolutely love ICPC. I think it's stunning.

I used to truly loath Life O The Party, and then all of a sudden I had a U-turn and started digging it. It's got that nails-on-a-chalkboard, obnoxious vocal delivery that he started doing in the mid-late 90s, with tracks like Mad Sex and Animal Kingdom. For some reason, I find these kind of vocal inflections really funky!!

For me, Illusion, Coma, Pimp And Circumstance is good quality Prince.

It's lithe, witty, sparse, clever, fun, funky, unexpected and barbed. And technically very good.

Life O' The Party might be the worst track he ever recorded, on the other hand. It's witless, unfunny, unfunky, leaden, dunderheaded, bland, cliched, obvious and stupid. The bridge is a little better (the 'I thought he was gay' part), a little wittier, but otherwise this is just a shit song given a shit delivery.

Unfortunately, regardless of the quality of the songs themselves, they BOTH SOUND quite shit, because - as with pretty much all of Prince's 2000s output, they're mastered so loud that they distort. Will never understand why he allowed that. It ruins a lot of his music, particularly on Hit N Run Phase 1 (regardless of what you think of the music itself).

I like the Musicology album overall, just wish all these 2000s albums would get proper remasters that aren't subject to the loudness wars. They could scrub Lifeless O' The Party from the tracklisting at the same time and I wouldn't complain.

great point. AND i would suggest sums up a lot of Prince albums! ie some very disposable by numbers tracks next to stone cold classics like Call My Name...whihc just ooooozes class!...dayum his vocals on that are utter perfection.

Yes i so agree I was just thinking how much I love Emanipation and what an awesome album it is..i love the 90s R&B grooves and style but I find myself skipping around so much on that one...he probably was very emotionally attached to many of the songs so I can see why he would want to include his babies but as a listener some of it is just filler to me.

talking of which...i played Emancipation [title track] the other week...how firece is his bass work on that...totally forgot how funky that bass work was.

Was Rhonda on that track? She was a badass! wink

No. It's Prince.
The wooh is on the one!

Get on the Boat is nothing like life O' the Party!!

LotP is not the best, agreed.

GotB is a catchy, upbeat, heartfelt number however. Great ending to 3121.

The 2 worst songs on what is a pretty solid album for me. They don't fit musically. would've preferred United State of Division or Magnificent. I prefer Musicology over 3121 which i always thought was average although it has warmed to me over the last 2 1/2 years.

Surprised these two songs are lumped together. I do agree that Life of the Party is uninspired but ICPC is really funky and a near classic to me.

LotP is eh, sometimes it's okay I'm in the mood for it, sometimes I skip it. ICPC, annoys me on a totally different level that I haven't seen anyone else ever express except me so I'm just going to leave it at that.

Something about the vocal delivery in ICPC bugs me but I don't hate the song.

The LIVE Version made it BETTER: Cause they played James Brown's "Hot Pants" over it! EXTRA NASSY!!!!
