Makes sense that this one was initially about Vanity based on the lyrics, and Jill's more recent statements. Per the Biographies, Prince and Vanity's relationship was quite tumultuous by this point, and Jill was in the mix along with Susan. She wanted love from him, and he wanted fun from her.

*

"You say that you love me, it don't do no good,

You want me to trust you I wish that I could,

You cannot build a house with plastic wood, neutral eek wink Classic Prince quirky lyric

You've got a wonderful ass"...

*

I guess what it is is that I hate your ideas of fun (Oh yeah?)
But baby I rate your ass number one
I don't usually have time to drink from your glass
But I can always find time for your ass
You know what I'm talkin' about baby?
(Yeah)
I'm talkin about that... ass (ew)
(Sexy in here, yeah)

Yeah I think you may be right, Vanity it is, and she had a big ol butt, just like Tina lol

The Plastic wood line, though - only Prince wackadoo lyrics.

Or is it a stylistic barb at that hideous plastic wood panelling you see in the houses of most working class, rust belt and billy bob type trailers that was popular in the USA from around 1966 to 1985 and is still seen in many reality shows like Honey Boo Boo and my 600lb life.

[Edited 9/25/18 19:47pm]

Actually, Vanity had a very very nice butt - not too big in any way - and I'm a straight woman saying this. I would say, along with her facial beauty it was one of her best "assets" pun intended smile Jellybean Johnson, when talking about Vanity's body stated, "oh trust me, I used to stand behind her when she was on stage for Vanity 6, and that is an ass that would make you leave your home" Seriously, she did have a good one, and she often wore outfits to accentuate it. If you watch some of her solo performances post Vanity 6 you'll notice it. She would wear skin-tight dresses, and they showed off the perfect shape of her butt. She also did two spreads in Playboy - I've never seen those pics, but I'm sure there were several showing off her rear view.

*

Prince always played with words and phrases in his songs to make certain points or convey meaning. The line "you can't build a house with plastic wood" came right after the line "you want me to trust you, I wish that I could" seems to convey that he felt their relationship did not have a strong foundation, and that her behavior would not sustain a relationship. But really, Prince always had a double standard when it came to relationships - his own cheating was never a problem, or he did not acknowledge it.

Regarding TBO and Prince's comments during the Ebony interview....first, this is the ONLY interview Prince ever had retracted in his life. He had it pulled within hours of publication. This was also during the time that Alan Light's book was published, and Susannah had finally spoken out about their relationship, which she had never done prior. All of the band contributed to his book, and I have no doubt that he was not at all pleased with that. They were also fighting because of the situation with Fdeluxe/The Family releasing new music. Susannah was doing interviews, and they were discussing how he would not let them use the old name. He was also rambling and making strange comments about many things in that interview. Sorry, but I don't consider that dialog, that he himself retracted, to be credible. If he had stood by his words he would not have pulled the piece from public view.

*

Prince was no doubt very sad when Vanity passed, and he then had to perform a show. He had to grieve on stage - he did not have a choice. The way he honored her was very touching, and it was a sweet tribute to her. Here is exactly what he said (copied from Complex.com):

*

"Like many, Prince was stunned to learn that his protegé, collaborator, and lead singer of Vanity 6, Denise Matthews a.k.a. Vanity, passed away at the age of 57. Last night, the Purple One honored his late girlfriend at the first show of his solo Australian tour in Melbourne. “Someone dear to us has passed away, I’m gonna dedicate this song to her,” Prince said. He then launched into an emotional rendition of "Little Red Corvette"mashed up with "Dirty Mind," which are both songs from the time the two were together, according to AU News.

Later in the set, Prince reworked the lyrics of "The Ladder," replacing 'Electra’ with ‘Vanity’ so that the lyrics became, “This Prince, he had a subject named Vanity who loved him with a passion, uncontested.” At the end of his show, he took a moment and addressed the audience, “I am new to this playing alone. I thank you all for being so patient. I’m trying to stay focused, it’s a little heavy for me tonight. Just keep jamming ... She knows about this one.” He then performed "The Beautiful Ones," which is another song from their time together.

Finally, the usually less chatty Prince asked the audience if he could tell them a story. “Can I tell you a story about Vanity? Or should I tell you a story about Denise? Her and I used to love each other deeply. She loved me for the artist I was, I loved her for the artist she was trying to be. She and I would fight. She was very headstrong cos she knew she was the finest woman in the world. She never missed an opportunity to tell you that.” Catch Prince playing on tour in Australia with two more shows in Melbourne before he heads to Sydney and Perth."

*

Prince was eulogizing her after her death, and it was very tender and sweet. One would expect nothing less based on the time they had spent together. However, I have no doubt that if it had been Susannah who had passed he would have been, at the least, equally devastated. Prince was reminiscing a lot during the P&M tour. He wasnted to show his love for Wendyand Lisa, and told a sweet story about meeting Lisa and how beautifully she plays the piano. He also knew he wasn't doing well, which I'm sure added to his heightened emotions during the tour.

*

Prince was also reaching out to Susannah prior to his death, as she stated during her interview with Toure - that he had contacted her because he wanted to write and record with her again, and he sent her song lyrics two weeks prior to his emergency landing in Moline. No doubt that he was wanting to make amends, and stop the fighting. I hope she can share those lyrics at some point. He was reaching out to many of his past associates and friends not long before his passing.

Wow. You resorted to slyly post naked pictures of Vanity from Tanya’s Island on Prince.org? There are kids on this site... eek This is my last reply to you because the thread/debate has come unhinged...

Did you read the way he struck out at Susan Rogers in the interview? No doubt he thought better of embarrassing her and everyone else, putting his true feelings out there on the subject like that. It's totally understandable and quite magnanimous that he removed the piece in consideration.
*

He actually did stand by his words where “The Beautiful Ones" was concerned. The article you posted referenced it. A few months after revealing that Vanity's departure was an inspiration for "The Beautiful Ones," he backed it up, revealing that she knew about it, connecting her to the song once more. Why do u think he called attention to her knowing about the song before performing it? You think he was relaying that she heard it on the radio? lol

You're kidding, right?? The pictures are all over the internet. The Tanya's Island film and pictures are also posted on the The Department Of African American Arts And Culture web site. All I had to do was search on "Vanity" to find the pictures. Any "kid' on this site who is interested in Vanity no doubt can or has seen the pictures, and probably the film too. Here iis the DAAAC web site: http://www.daarac.org/201...-1980.html ...in case you'd like to see it for yourself.

*

YET again, regarding TBO - I said that Vanity was part of the inspiration for the song, because she had just left the film. However, in no way do some of the lyrics connect to her. By ALL accounts though, Prince wanted Susannah and had been pursuing her for a long time, but she was in another relationship. When has Prince EVER discussed personal relationhsip details of this nature in an interview, or given the public that type of specific information?

*

In addition to Susan Rogers, he also made reference to Matt Fink's comments about his discussion with Prince about writing a ballad song after watching a Bob Seger concert. There were many personal things that came out in Alan Light's and Matt Thorne's books that I'm sure he would never have wanted the public to know. By 2013-2014 though, those people who had rarely or never spoken about their experiences decided to tell their stories, and they had every right to, because it was their history too. Suannah had never spoken publicly about their relationship.

*

Your opinion is that he retracted the article, because he did not want to embarrass Susan or others. Since when did Prince ever care about that? He has always said what he wanted to say at any given time, and did not apologize for it. I think it was his attempt to create a counter to things written in the books in order to keep the mystery intact. It was a retaliation of sorts, which he then decided against. Prince was known for making legal threats against former associates who spoke about their experiences, but he could not sue the publishing companies, because it is not illegal to write Biographies.

Just to note, the idea that Susan Rogers would break into Paisley Park and get at the Vault is enough to pull that article. It wasn't a sensible thought to think she would actually do that.

That wouldn't embarrase her, but him.

Agreed. There were several "out there" comments during the interview., like this:

*

"Religion, when used properly, actually is like a health regimen. And they’re finding now that people who have faith live longer. I mean, it says so in the book. That’s what it’s supposed to be. You ain’t supposed to die. If there’s God, then that’s what God would be."
*
He knew Susan very well and worked closely with her for years. He knew she would never even contemplate the idea of breaking into the PP vault. She only expressed her concern for all of the unreleased tapes that should be organized and restored - and guess what?? She was absolutely right. Now they are dealing with all of that mess which is delaying the future releases.

I love We Can Fuck. To me, it is the one and only. I read that Sheila refused to say "fuck", so Prince changed it to "funk". She stated he still sang "fuck", but her lyric changed. Although, on princevault it does not list Sheila as benig involved. Hmmm, I could swear she stated that in an interview.

That's right! She was the one who originally began organizing and cataloging all of the tapes. If not for her initial efforts who knows what would have become of those recordings, and the recordings after she left??
