Of the ones I've seen, SOTT feels like the most pointless. Lyric videos are boring in general, but especially low-budget ones from 1987

I don’t really care much about the videos. I really like Kiss, and he had a couple of cool late ones (Cinamon Girl I seem to remember quite liking, but I haven’t seen it for about 13 years...). It’s funny though that so many people are referring to the D&P era videos as some of the worst when in another thread not so long ago they were being referred to as some of the best!

i actually think the batman ones were his best by far, probably because the association with the movie, he probably had great people ready to put together some good ones. The early performance ones were fine, nothing groundbreaking but were a great introduction to the visual aspect that led to 1999. As I said though, the medium is actually totally unneccessary and works against music. If i had only two choices to hear/watch the music or just hear it, i'd pick just listening everytime.

I agree.A lyric video in 1987 made no sense at all.A superb song like that deserved a truly brilliant video.

Paisley Park...if you can call it a video.

Someone said they thought Glam Slam was the worst? I love that video...I am not the biggest fan of the song itself but seeing him perform it on the Lovesexy stage elevates it. I had a new respect for that song when I finally saw the video years later.

me too......, cool

"Glam Slam" isn't the "worst" at all.... imoh as well. no no no!

Yes, I even love the song it self (and all of Lovesexy)-

and (like you) I love the musicvideo, Prince dancing blindfolded with with Cat... cool cool cool

"Glam Slam" thank u ma'am.... imho.. what a lovely (pop) song... music love

I like the "Glam Slam" video, too. It sorta gave us a preview of what the Lovesexy tour would be like.

but yeah,I agree with those of you who said "Paisley Park" is the worst. That video is absolutely pointless and cheap. The song is excellent (it's Prince's most Beatles-influenced song) and deserved a better video.

Agreed. There's a clear narrative to both the album and the accompanying 3 Chains O' Gold film (of which this promo video is a part), where Mayte is clearly playing a role. There's truly no distinction between Mayte's garb here and that worn by any other actress playing a part.

My least favourite is probably 'Cinnamon Girl' due to the direction the events take in the video, which I find somewhat simplistic and cliched.

I appreciate the song though, so it's a minor quibble. I genuinely enjoy all the remaining videos. Just wish there were more.

Yes, there was a Porno version that aired on the Playboy channel that mixed some clips into the original video.

There was also a scene in the 3 Chain's O'Gold movie with naked girls in a pool so you could be thinking of that

I think you might be referring to the Eye Wanna Melt With U video. I was particularly fond of that one when I was 17 wink

No, I'm not referring to the I Wanna Melt With U video. I was also fond of that at 17!

.

There was a MNIP video, I think it was the 12" Club Mix or House Mix, with the original video spliced with scenes from a porno with naked girls in a tub. It maybe online somewhere, sure you'll enjoy it...

They're very good, but are almost cancelled by the awful Scandalous video that he also directed.

He didn't direct the Scandalous video.. did he? I thought Prince did that one mostly solo and actually credited Kim Basinger as having directed it. Am I remembering this wrong?

Magnoli also ghost directed the Sign o the Times concert film, as can be seen on the slates in the outtakes. It makes sense, it has the same dynamci vibe and sense of color as Pruple Rain or the Batman videos.

IMDB have him as director. It’s usually a pretty a reliable source.

IMDB is kind of maintained like wikipedia. It can have incorrect info until someone corrects it.

ahh, that's news to me, i didn't know magnoli directed those, explains why they were so good. I never saw the scandalous video i don't think. notable thing about that great song though is it was, in my mind, the start of his more traditionally composed "slow jams" as he liked to call them when he told RS, "they write off my slow jams" (he was right, they were some of his best works).

Thus my use of the qualifiers “usually” and “pretty”.

I remember at the time, there was alot of talk that Kim Basinger would be directing the "Scandalous" video.I think she came up with some very racy, provocative plans that even Prince had to refuse lol as far as I know,he ended up directing it himself
