.

Off topic; Doozer, I've enjoyed listening to a few of your podcasts. Good work thumbs up!

Also off-topic: Thank you! There are so many great Prince-related podcasts out there by people with real connections like Militant. I’d encourage anyone who is critical of a podcast to try making one, or even just planning / preparing for one, or try being a guest on one to see what goes into it. I think it would be a real eye opener.

Behave. You're creating drama where it doesn't exist. Shining a spotlight on the one negative (and not of the podcast itself) in this thread versus the dozens of positives, really isn't helping.

Great interview, thanks ! I really like your choice of interview partners, too, and the way you handle those interviews.

I'm supporting Militant, who also responded to criticism (what you refer to as "drama") earlier in the thread.

The interview was fantastic, and the type of insightful questions posed to Hans-Martin Buff were extremely thoughtful and well researched. When an interviewee asks the interviewer, "How did you know that?", you know the interviewers dug deep. (Buff asked that question regarding a painting he made of the Parade album cover that is discussed in the interview.)

Agreed but none of this really answers my point. Your dig at an imaginary group of protestors felt highly redundant. Why is this not obvious to you?

I'm not sure what your issue is with an opinion being expressed, but clearly it has irritated you to the point of questioning my ability to answer a point or to see the painfully obvious.

An early post in this thread questioned the OP's knowledge of Prince. This is not imaginary; this is reply #9, which required a mod to snip an unnecessarily ugly personal attack. The OP took the time to respond and take issue with that. I posted my support for the OP and thanked him for the thoughtful interview. The only thing not obvious to me is why this would bother someone like you.

Excellent! Great interview! I love the 96-00 period, so this was quite a treat for me and warrants some feedback.

-

I agree with the Justin Bieber/Frank Zappa dichotomy, but I would've framed it as a Michael Jackson/Frank Zappa dichotomy, instead. Still, though, it's the same sentiment and one that I think is dead on target.

-

Ditto on the "Release It" beat sample. That's the one I would most want, too.

-

Emancipation singles I would have gone with:

Somebody's Somebody

Sex in the Summer

One Kiss at a Time

Dreamin' About You

New World

Style

My Computer

...and if there's going to be a cover then I would have gone with "One Of Us."

-

I love "The Sun, the Moon and Stars." The clunker for me on that album by far is "Baby Knows."

-

"The solo piano thing" is a logical step bringing it (the place he was at musically when he died) all the way back around to the beginning, and signals the beginning of the estate era releases with an intimate performance that is sure to be a bittersweet emotional roller coaster for most fans. It also buys more time to mull over the decisions regarding the forthcoming studio material such as song choices, sequencing, art packaging, mastering. I want all of that stuff bad, but I want them to take the time and put all the thought and effort into it they require to do it right.

I think what's irritating me is your stubborn refusal/ inabilty to connect with my point. Earlier you suggested that Militant's response to criticism was the "drama" I was referring to. No. This is wrong. The drama I was referring to was of your own making by attacking an imaginary group of protactors. They just don't exist. This is something you made up. THATS THE DRAMA. Yours.

Now, for some absurd reason, you think that I think the one criticism made here was imaginary. I don't. I'm just saying you've taking things well out of proportion.

It's irritating to have to constantly define what one is saying when it was painfully obvious the first time. READ properly.

No, I did not refer to Militant's response as "drama." I wrote:

The criticism is what I was pointing at as "drama." That's why it was parenthetical after the word "criticisim," and not after "Militant." Misplaced modifiers bother me, and I try my best to avoid them.

I think you're completely wrong. You feel the same about me. I'm OK leaving it at that, and we can just agree that this interview was fanstastic, and we're both thankful for the post, and we both enjoy Prince's music. Is that enough common ground to shake hands?

Yes. The interview was fantastic. Of course, this has nothing to do with our disagreement, which again suggests you have no idea what I'm talking about. Feel free to think I'm completely wrong. I know you'd never be able to articulate why, though.

I'm honestly glad we can agree, and I am leaving it at that despite what I consider a pretty remarkable insult as you've stated I'd never be able to articulate something. You've proclaimed you are smarter than me, and I can't express my thoughts, so there is no need to respond any further.

I'd be glad to discuss the interview more, or debate my own intelligence with you via orgnotes, which I'm more than certain the mods would prefer.

I'll even reach out now and ask what information in this interview was particularly interesting or surprising to you, in an effort to get back on topic?

For me. Buff speaking about dropping CDs off at Prince’s guard station with handwritten notes was really endearing. Hearing how he came to the realization that it was time to leave was interesting. And being able to agree that “Silly Game” was a surprising choice to include on “Rave” was satisfying, as it’s one of my least favorite album tracks. Buff describing how he got out of touring was also pretty funny - so he could sleep and see his family.

Seems an interesting, nice guy.

However Militant you are showing a few gaps of knowledge, for example talking about latin music from the orginal 1982 '1999' being done by Sheila E. when she didn't even do any sessions with Prince until the Purple Rain era!

Also, it was slightly embarrasing when you said you couldn't hear Kate Bush's vocals in My Computer. I think you can hear them quite easily when you listen carefully. As HM Buff politely pointed out, they were meant to be backing vocals and not a duet anyway, but saying this to the engineer seems a bit tactless as if he didn't know his job.

Otherwise nice, the girl is nice too. [Unecessary personal attack - snipped - June7]

[Edited 7/27/18 0:06am]

Prince and Sheila met in January 1980, so it's not totally inconceivable, actually. If there's unreleased Latin percussion in a song, it's a fairly obvious thought to muse on - you'll note that I didn't state it as a fact. Also, maybe you don't remember but people have been having conversations about not or barely being able to hear Kate on "My Computer" literally since Emancipation came out. Use the search function, and you'll see numerous discussions. Finally, I don't know who you are, I don't remember you ever making any personality comments about me before, and you appear to be literally the only person that feels that way, so I would kindly suggest that you appear to be the one with the problem. Feel free to go and make a thread about how much you dislike me, but don't show up in threads about interviews I've done that take a CONSIDERABLE amount of time, money and effort to create, which I do for free, nitpick on tiny, opinion based things like I don't know what I'm talking about, and then have the nerve to make personal comments about me. That's petty as fuck and worthless.

Finally sat down and listened to this. Some things that stood out to me that are very interesting for discussion (and should hopefully entice you to listen to the interview if you haven't already)

- Out of the whole "I am going to re-record my entire back catalog" thing Prince was talking about, the only thing that was recorded besides 1999: The New Master was a drum & bass version of Let's Pretend We're Married.

- "You have to realize he made music every day. And he would make that music whether he had something to say or not. It's just what he did. And you could tell when he had something to say."

- There was a beginning part to Comeback that was never released which gives him goosebumps just thinking about. And it wasn't erased. It still exists in the vault. Timecode around the 18 minute mark if you want to hear what it was lol

- The Truth and Don't Play Me were recorded in a single take. Afterwards, he added a couple of overdubs.

- Did a couple of versions of Welcome 2 The Dawn.

- There were some funky acoustic sessions during the recording of The Truth. Fascination was the only one that made the album.

- 2 songs from Musicology were first concieved during The Truth sessions. Specifically mentions A Million Days. Later in the interview, he reveals that the other song was If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life.

- For the Crystal Ball project, Prince gave him a list of songs and had him fish them out of the Vault. He shortened a number of songs. Specifically mentions Crystal Ball, Days Of Wild, Cloreen Bacon Skin. 2 weeks to put it all together. Mastering took a long time.

- He won't mention the name of an amazing song that was considered for Crystal Ball but "it was actually a well known song by another 80s pop star that he actually did a new backing for that he was asked to do but it was never released". Prince talked about how the star's people were just partying to it.

- Wonderful Ass was originally slated for Crystal Ball.

- Manuela and HM Buff convinced Prince to include Strange But True onto Rave Un2 but Prince insisted on overdubbing "those weird scratchy things and the beep bee beep things". Apparently the original version was just linn drum and some keyboards.

- Some things that ended up on Slaughterhouse and Chocolate Invasion came from the Rave sessions. Specifically mentions Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This?

- George Clinton sent the Paradigm tape back when HM Buff was still working there. Prince thought it was awesome. Prince worked on it for like four hours.

- Prince once had a staff meeting without inviting HM Buff and it turned out that the meeting was about reopening the studio. He had the tendancy to just ignore advice that he didn't agree with and avoid people that had an opinion otherwise.

- She Gave Her Angels on Crystal Ball is a very truncated version.

- Prince asked HM what he thought should be taken off of Rave and HM answered The Sun, The Stars And The Moon. To which Prince replied "Hans! How's your sex life?" which meant he included it for the ladies.

- "Why he chose to put out what he chose to put out is much more of a mystery to me." Ditto for the estate choosing to release "the solo piano thing" out of all the things they could release.

- Larry Graham was like a ray of sunshine in Paisley. Treated HM the same way he'd treat Prince.

- The unreleased song that HM said was his favorite unreleased track, which happened to be recorded on his first day with Prince, was "kind of like We March only a bit more Gospel". And the title of that track was The Divine.

- The Love We Make and The Divine were recorded on the same day.

- Most of the music seemed to grow out of musicial moments in the studio and HM wonders how many of the song explanations were attached by Prince afterwards as a cool little aside.

- He looked at the police photos they released and the vault looked exactly the way it did when he left 20 years ago. He agrees with the estate's decision to move the contents to Iron Mountain.

- "There's two albums for every one that was released on there so start saving up people."

Most of this is new to me. Thank you for taking notes, Strive. I usually do that too with interviews like this. I'm particularly intrigued about The Divine. I hope we get to hear it someday. smile

i think prince himself said something to the effect that it was an older song, at the time the 20Ten

arrangement for it, or something like that.

These are the known unreleased songs from the period as sourced from Prince Vault. A few of the titles Buff mentioned are present here, though it obviously shouldn't be considered definitive. 'Funk Radio' isn't included, though I don't know if anyone knows much about the song other than the brief sample that appeared on NPGMC. The contents of the Madr

Madrid 2 Chicago album don't seem to be clear or definite judging from Buff's comments, though Prince did mention it as a potential album on the NPGMC, so must've had some kind of final tracklisting in mind.

One of the reasons why this interview is so good, is because of Hans Martin Buff being such a adorable great and funny guy.

He's very professional, on many levels.

Must be the German approach, or as they say, the 'deutsche Gründlichkeit'. wink

He doesn't necessarely pushes his own opinions, asked or unasked, which I think is a very rare and intelligent move (that I don't have). wink

And he knows when NOT to tell something. biggrin

-

He also seems very capable of overlooking situations (and people), then think, rethink, and skip all the unneeded info and even leaving (all) the blaming (if so), and preserve the facts for what they are.

I love his no-drama attitude, and still being capable of approaching things in an unexpected funny response.

-

Great interveiw - could've been more deeper, but hey, like he says himself: (there's always a) 'coulda woulda shoulda'. wink (So who am I...)

-

He should write a book though !

I looooove his story telling.

Hans ???!

Alas, I'm not an elitist and don't know how to qualify as one. I would like to hear any song with that kind of title. Or just any unreleased material at all frankly wink I have most of the recent circulating boots but rumours of this kind of elitist material are tantalising smile

That being said, songs like 'Emotional Pump', 'Big Tall Wall' and 'Wally' leaked in good quality recently, so there is hope.

You forgot to ask H.M. Buff if he kept copies of the songs. Maybe he's got the full length She Gave Her Angels and The Divine? shocked

Yes, Anna has that.

She is a dear friend and a wonderful person. In fact, she consulted with myself and Kim about whether or not she should upload the video demo she did for "Fantasia Erotica" plus the recordings of the phonecalls she had with Prince that are included.

I haven't heard that song - but she did play us the entire "Anna Waiting" whilst we were there, and it's phenomenal.

I don't believe that Hans kept copies of songs, that's not really good practice for an engineer. Prince may have gave him some in some cases, but I very much doubt that he would specifically make copies for himself.

I can ask him - we talk a lot on WhatsApp. After this interview, we spoke a little bit about some other songs, and he also remembers working on "Love Never Has 2 Say Goodbye".

Could you ask him about 'Funk Radio'? It would be much appreciated.

I'm really quite surprised about this Kate Bush thing apparently having been a topic for so many. Her vocals are really obvious if you ask me, a little buried in the mix for sure, but you'll find them immediately as long as you look for them. Or maybe that's because I'm a hardcore Kate Bush fan, so the texture of her voice is very familiar to me, but there wasn't ever any doubt for me as to whether they were there or where they were.

Maybe it is familiarity, like you say. I'm so familiar with Prince's many voices and not at all with Kate Bush's, so I really need to listen to even hear her voice sandwiched in between his highs and lows.

Militant, thank you so much for a wonderful interview. Your depth of knowledge lead to deeper answers by Hans. Great all around.
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

Great interview.

Hans is very respectful of his old bosss. Not out to make a name for himself. Almost every other ‘associate’ or employee would never admit to being lucky to get the gig, or somewhat underqualified for the job Prince gave them.

Refreshing honest.
