i always assumed that it was more along the lines of a deer or horse or something, not a domesticated animal necessarily. like they were screwing in the woods like wild beasts.

The only people who were checking for that were in Prince's circle, i.e. the musicians who actually heard the bassline before it was aborted. For almost everybody else, the kick drum and the underlying bass percussion pretty much made up for that "absence".
