LMAO!...i always thought P sounded drunk/high on that song...and he looked sickly in the video too... i had leave P alone for awhile during that era... hiphop was calling me during the 90s...i had temporarily lost the passion for Prince's whole movement during those years

probably the lotus flower project, I'd never been so unmoved by a Prince album.

dirty mind has never really impressed me although I'm aware how highly regarded it is.

I'm impressed with your courage in listing Dirty Mind as a worst album. Makes me brave enough to say that Prince's first two albums, For You and Prince, never really impressed me. I listen to them and think they are ok but nothing really captures my ears or my mind.

for you has never been a fave just from a songwriting perspective. Prince i have always loved, dirty mind didn't have great songs or great production..

That's what is so great about Prince, what One person thinks is terrible, another thinks is great!

Here are my least favorites:

N.E.W.S.

Indigo Nights

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

there are a few stinkers out there, but those are mostly the albums starting musicology but 3121 besides, added with almost-side-stuff such as slaughterhouse, kamasutra, NPG stuff etc.

Leaving those alone, i'd go with following 'big albums':

Symbol (solid first place on worst list)

Emancipation (should be first but at least sounds happier than symbol)

Slaughterhouse

Rainbow Children ( though like the songs as covered in his One Night Alone Live tour)

Funny, I never listened closely enough to Rainbow Children to get the charges of anti-Semitism leveled at Prince at the time. Always liked that album.

Then I heard those songs performed on One Night Alone and I was like... oh, shit.

1. The Vault (worst) a middle finger to WB? I like "there is lonely". On "My lilttle pill" was Prince letting us know back then that he was a pill popper?

They were written for the I'll Do Anything soundtrack and were for characters to sing.

.

.

.

My picks:

- Rave (duh)

- MPLSound

- HNR Phase 1

- 20ten

- 3121

- Musicology

- Emancipation

- The 2 NPGMC compilations

.

.

Most of these have at least 1 oe 2 decent tracks each, but overall they were all well below par of what Prince was capable of (which in hindsight for some of these is probably an unfair judgement with what else he had going on).

Interesting responses. I haven't heard Kamasutra, NEWS, Indigo Nights, or Slughterhouse either at all or not enough times to make a judgement on those.

Prince gave us so much music, its fun to come up with your top Prince songs/albums for (insert your category). Whether it be best slow jam, dance songs, rock song, party song, God inspired song, etc. etc. You can slice up his catalog and fill up a plate pretty easily.

I still haven't heard Chocolate Factory or Slaughterhouse, but I haven't read many good things about them.

the thing with prince is that he has bad albums ... but there are albums i really hate ... rainbow children is that for me ... i can ignore pseudo elevator jazz or casio kamasutra noodles .. musically rainbow should be more enjoyable than some of his notoriously bad albums .. but some of his lyrics are what really kill some of his best ideas .. and turn a record from uninteresting to hard to listen to at all

ya, lots of folks think everything after PR was a stinker, which is bull, Prince only had a few "stinkers" in my opinion and even those had some interesting moments.

I'd say "least favorite," because reasonable minds can disagree. But if I had to choose among my least favorites, I'd choose, in chronological order . . .

NewPowerSoul (1998)

Planet Earth (2007)

MPLSound (2009)

That's true, even one of my choices, NewPowerSoul, had one of his best post-80's songs in "Come On." But there are probably a half-dozen or so albums that lacked any appeal for me. I'd say Planet Earth and MPLSound top that list.

Planet Earth is the first Prince album I ever found flat out boring. Well, N.E.W.S too...I don't get the Rainbow Children hate. I get the aversion to the message and whatever but musically it's quite strong. Lots of great songs on it.

Graffiti Bridge, film and album, I just could never get into it confused Same with a lot of Crystal Ball and Emancipation.
.
I could only get down with 2night on the Bria Elixer album, even that one had that part about broke back busters lol
.
I love Indigo Nights... it's one track right? I remember the book was fly at the time like a fashion mag but all Prince. I listen to that concert more often than Lovesexy as one track.
if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Prince had many 3-Star albums, some 4-Star, and even a couple 5-Star records.

What would you categorize as his (3) three WORST albums (of widely released material) ? I'm talking records with only 1-2 good songs (at most) that you can listen to on the album?

My List would be:

1. The Vault (worst) a middle finger to WB? I like "there is lonely". On "My lilttle pill" was Prince letting us know back then that he was a pill popper?

2. 20Ten (not far behind) "Sticky Like Glue" was a nice one though.

3. Musicology (subpar) 2 good songs, "Call my name" and "If I was the man in ur life"

[Edited 6/26/18 13:01pm]

No album with these brilliant songs can be considered bad: It’s About That Walk When the Light’s Go Down There is Lonely On the Couch Call My Name Dear Mr. Man Reflection What Do U Want Me 2 Do The Vault album is very underrated just because of its back story and weird WB release.

Amen!

1) Hit N Run Phase One

2) The Slaughterhouse (even with PEACE and 2045 RADICAL MAN [one of his best])

3) Controversy (I don't like much of it.... VERY underwhelming for me....but I wasn't born when it came out so... who knows).... U could throw away the entire Side B if it weren't for LETS WORK

(I'm not counting KAMASUTRA/GOLDNIGGA/CNOTE/ONA LIVE/XPECTATION (its just bad)/CRYSTAL BALL (a compilation)....but AM counting THE TRUTH (*very good!)

I remember buying Planet Eart at Best Buy on my lunch break. I listed to it in the car and I never felt so dissapointed in a Prince album before. I listened to it once and felt so ashamed, it was one of the most boring uninspired Prince albums ever...

I felt HitnRun Phase Two was boring as well despite some good musicianship and songs in the album, overall the feeling was a lack of excitement.
