A worse disaster than dying alone in an elevator from an OD? If he wanted to die, that's one thing, but if it was all an accident, it's sad and tragic. He would have had to get over that his secret was out...and no true fans would've cared!! [Edited 7/24/18 15:08pm] [Edited 7/24/18 15:09pm]
I think he rather die than have his secret come out, yes.

its not like the truth coming out would affect his cd sales...

I am not assuming they thought it was going to be a tragic demise. I am assuming they thought Prince was the type of guy who would get his shit together eventually when he told his employees to get him private help.. I don't think until the very end did people think there was a chance he wouldn't be able to get help, but at that point, he seemed virtually unreachable. He had no cell phone, a very private personal email, lived thousands of miles away and had possibly the only key to the facility he lived in. People may have sent their best wishes but I do think they thought it was up to him to get better. And since he was saying, "I am cool. Dont sweat it" and was seen riding his bike around town and throwing parties, that they thought "phew, he dodged a bullet and he must be on his way to getting better." I actually think that it is harder to know how to help a highly functional addict. They seem like they can handle what they are doing until all of the sudden, they can't anymore.

Sorry but I don't think its that simple. Even if LK helped expose the public to rumors about Prince, Prince could easily deny it, could double-down, rehire new associates. He didn't want help. No one had his back because he didn't let them have it. There are celebrities who openly asked for help from their associates and even the public and they still died (Whitney Houston). Celebrities like George Michael and Tom Petty died of drugs too. I dont hear their fan base state that the entirety of the folks around either one of those guys disliked them to the point of not caring what happened to them. Its almost like people think that Prince was so damn unlikable that it couldn't be more complicated than just a complete lack of concern.

You could be right, he could've told everyone to pound sand, but they should've tried anyway. We've had this same conversation before and I still feel the same. "He might tell me to myob, so I'm just going to keep quiet and watch his tragic demise". No! Grow a pair and at least TRY to get through to him.

His life WAS his image. It was the thing he had created all by himself. It was the thing that made the world alright to him. Without it he would be just flesh and bones. You act like dying is the worst thing that can happen to a person.

And his image was not his life...it was just that, an image and part of that image was not true to his actual life. I'm sad that he got in to drugs, but I never would have judged him for it had I found out and I'm not alone. If his image was truly more important to him than life, that was not an image, that was a prison.

You are so right.

with Prince you can't separate the image from the life. It was the same thing. Perfected since he got into the music business as an 18 year old. I suspect he started working on his image, his personae even earlier.

I never believed his coquetry when he said such things but the discrepancy between it and the way it did happen in the end still couldn't be much bigger..

Thank you for saying this; I know it must be painful. There was no 'celebration' at the end...even if it was purposeful and the elevator was some grand, spooky gesture and the timing ('I'll never go public with rehab and my addiction...I would rather die first') was his last 'will' and testament...it was the demise of a man who had lost all control of the narrative thread of his life. RIP.

So true. And it's still so surreal to remember him in life or see things like that interview - in control - and now we are here and try to make sense of his death. To me it's still like we're talking about two different people. Like that guy who died is someone else.

This week also marks the 40th anniversary of my mother's passing, I was too young to even get to know her, she's like that big shadow, just question marks. With Prince, there are memories and this way he somehow cannot die.

We could get into how imperfect his perfected image was, but its not relevant to the investigation. I hear what you've been saying, Paul, I just wish P. was still around so we could run this all by him and get his take!

Yes grouphug to all. We may never really know what happened but what his tragedy teaches us is to look after ourselves and one another and to love unconditionally and let each other know. That it's okay to fall and not be perfect and that it's okay to ask for help.

Sorry for OT.
