In terms of musical and lyrical invention, Lovesexy is the one.

I always listen from start to finish as intended, but if I had to play favourites? For me, the highs come right around when Prince's pretty little whip gets him drippin all over the floor, when the Alphabet Street riff comes back after Cat's rapping, when Glam Slam loses itself in a synth solo that resolves in the Anna Stesia chords, when Spooky starts popping chewing gum.

How could anyone NOT have "Alphabet St." in the top 3 songs from "Lovesexy"?!?! (If not the very top position, where I place it.) Is this one of those "Yanny"/"Laurel" situations, where people are hearing different notes and beats and lyrics than I do? "Alphabet St." is lodged safely in what I consider to be Prince's top 5 songs ever, including all the unreleased/bootleg stuff.

Great thread! I love Lovesexy as it is one of his most upbeat and positive albums - yet it is so catchy too. There are no bad songs on this one and the song in 9th place is still a good song.

1. Anna Stesia - I can never get enough of it

2. Alphabet Street - This is a classic single full stop, funky, bouncy and the first song in which I noticed Prince as a kid.

3. Lovesexy - I just love the quirkiness and the sound

4. When 2 R in Love - In amongst all of this brilliance, another classic Prince seduction ballad, who could ask for more.

5. I wish u heaven - Another beautiful song and I love his soaring vocals here and some great vocal multitracking.

6. Glam Slam - this upbeat pop/sex cut really makes my day too.

7. Positivity - This is a great closer and has a lot going on, maybe a bit too much

8. Eye No - An upbeat party opener and some great lyrics, plus he is channeling Camille with the vocal. The fact I love this song and its the second worst is a sign of the quality of this album!

9. Dance On, I still really like this and its quirky and clever, but just does not have the gravitas of say a street named after the alphabet or Annastesia.

The fact I love it all sums up how hard it was to order the songs. Mark wise, tracks 1 to 6 are all very close together and get 9 to 10, the last 3 songs are all solid 8/10s.

The Line, I would slot around 7th and it has a very Eye No feel to it, some Boni vocals add more cream and hence why its higher.

God is alive, I am less crazy on, but it is still a great song, so just after Dance On.

Perfect assessment of those songs.

You could say the same about jams: they don't seem to go anywhere.
The pleasure comes from the ride. Many James Brown records give the song's essence
under 2 minutes, and then go on for another 7.

You need serious infrabasses on "Dance On". The shit must rumble. Hi-hats must cut. Then maybe you'll see.
The problem with "Dance On" is the mix of cryptic imagery with long past social events,
even if in general they're still relevant.

"Dance On" finds Prince torn apart, hence the broken beat that stops and starts:
The liberating power of dancing is truly something he believes in,
but he comes to recognize the danger of permanent entertainement ("Dance On" refers to night-clubbing),
as a diversion of the conscience, in a world falling apart.

There's nothing in "Dance On" to dance on, actually.
