That's Mayte singing the word, "Come," right? Sounds like her.

i used to think so too, but later i started wondering if it was perhaps nona?

it's nona at the start of the 'when the fire comes will everyone burn?' bit, no?

It sounds more like Nona to me. She was quite involved with his recordings at that time. I used to think it was Mayte doing the NPG Operator segues on the Gold Album until I saw it was a woman named Rain Ivana...

Yea that’s her from TBE special, and I suppose it could be her on Come, but it kinda has that thin, whiny (no shade), Mayte-esque tone quality to me. [Edited 7/3/18 13:01pm]

yeah, it's probably mayte. and lol @ your discription of it.

I can't appreciate Come alone (recorded laughs).

To me, it's always been The Dawn, some sort of Dream Factory of the nineties.
This album tracklist is really too dark, as it is.

I need some Chaos and Disorder with it,
plus a bone to hide and some Golden Dolphins in Calhoun Square,
the place where we all forget his name, so he asks again.
36 tracks, the first (original? only?) Emancipation manifesto.

Otherwise it's just too bleak.
But good songs throughout, and a real, menacing reinvention:
More Thanatos than Eros. "Papa", "Solo" and "Letitgo" are some deep personal shit,
he's never been that dark and so blatantly autobiographic. It really is a disturbing album to me,
TBA is gloomy, very dark but fun, but Come really sounds like depression, even at its funkiest.

And considering what he was going through with WB,
the last tracklist must have a meaning, even if "Orgasm" placed last would like us
to believe that this is some sort of sensual-concept album, but it's just
Prince's modesty trying to erase "Letitgo" from our ears.

But too late, you said it:
For years you've been slowed down by a parachute,
Now it's time to let it go: all that glitters ain't gold.
Let's go back underground.

Reading your posts I am under the impression that you are a writer and/or poet - if not by trade then as a hobby?? Always entertaining!! I agree - much more blatantly autobiographic, and the "dark" mood of the track list seems to fit his state of mind at the time - especially late '92 to early '93. Susannah Melvoin, during her recent interview with Toure, stated that in '93 (she didn't specify the exact month) he had come (pun not intended!) to see her at her home in LA, and he was in a very sad state. She said she did not know what was happening with him, but he was not happy. I think this album represents a very difficult time for him both personally and professionally.

So, nobody likes "Solo"??? I love that song. I think it is extremely personal to him based on th story of how it came to be recorded, and the lyric, "I'm so low, solo, my name is no one" to me indicates his decision to change his name to the symbol. I also like "Orgasm", because I think it was written based on a specific event for him, given that the credit for the female lyric - even though it was originally Vanity - is "she knows". It is intense, but very personal. I think the entire album is extremely personal, and also represents a very dark period for him. I like all of it.

The story of how the song Solo came to be recorded:

*

Playwright Henry David Hwang wrote the lyrics to “Solo.” In 1993, he met with Prince to discuss collaborating on a musical. At the end of the meeting, Hwang recalls:

He’d like me to write a poem for him. About loss. The way you feel when you’ve lost someone you love. And you know they’re never coming back. And that, for the rest of your life, you’re going to be alone. He wants to do a song that suddenly breaks into a spoken word interlude. He rolls his eyes, “They’re gonna say, ‘The boy’s really lost it this time.’” … I write a poem about Love and Loss. Fax it to Paisley Park. A few days later, I get another cassette. A new song. Incorporating my poem. Not as a spoken word interlude after all, but as part of the lyrics. It’s called “Solo.” Hey, I’ve written a song. With Prince. Just like that.

The musical doesn’t end up working out, and Prince and I have never had reason to speak again. But a year later, I got a call from the woman at Paisley Park.

“Just wanted to let you know that the album is coming out. It will include ‘Solo.’ We’re thinking is it’s probably also going to be the B-side of the first single. I’m glad because it’s one of my favorite tracks.”

It was so odd at first, but I quickly learned to appreciate it. Not only are the words personal, it's really one of the first times Prince put his voice so up front and naked (meaning no real production to distract or hide behind).

Yes! I agree. It's angelic and haunting at the same time, and also a "naked" recording - like you said, no extra production or noises. I can picture him in the studio alone recording the song. The only other one that may have come close to this may have been the original "Wally" - with just him and the Piano, before he added the horns and extra things.

I like the versions 'COME' he played @ Glam Slam. The versions on the album are completely different.
