Promotion of SOTT sucked? It had four hit singles, a tour and a movie! That's more than most Prince albums!


-No real initial video.
-No US tour.
-If I Was Your Girlfriend second single (no video)...killed momentum of Sign single.
-Movie not properly released (10 months late) and promoted poorly.
-WB was befuddled on marketing plan for such a diverse set. Friction between label and Prince initiated over control of project.
-Lovesexy project cut into last single.
-No real Grammy campaign by WB and no promotion following Grammy nomination for a truly iconic album

A missed blockbuster imo. The album was HAILED critically but underperformed on the charts.

It's all right but kind of shoots it's wad (so to speak) near the end.

Better than its reputation and I have a soft spot for it since I fell head over heels in love around the time of its release. Certain songs, certain places, certain times....certain women....can be hard to shake that association.

True... It barely went Platinum in the U.S.

Can you beleive a masterpiece like SOTT only sold 1 million in USA...

My intention when remixing the record was to include any possible remix possible, and ones that were good. There were different versions of "Letitgo" that I could have used, as well as the club-y version of "Come" (I forget what the version is called, but it's the one from The Beautiful Experience). But I chose different options for those, and the only other version of "Dark" that I knew. I do like the album version more, but the point of the compilation was a remix album. Even "Loose!" or "Race" sort of (but not) sounds odd at first. It does flow pretty well, I think. But I don't disagree about "Dark".

I think Race and Letitgo and Papa are the dopest joints on the album. Someone had a point that the bad publicity he received sort of overshadowed the album.

I am also vowed to reexamine some of the other albums that I overlooked or didn't play as much after it released and that includes Rainbow Children and Planet Earth and N.E. W.S. I wouldn't be surprised of hearing more of his low-key albums going to be a treasure and high regard to picks among people.

yesterday i listened to the longer version of "race" (unreleased). i'm still a bit disappointed
that he cut that whole instrumental end off it on the album version. yes, it's more tight the
way he released it. but i enjoy that instrumental portion so much. it's like a distant cousin'
to 'girls and boys'. a weird, demented 20s/80s/90s hybrid cousin to 'girls and boys' lol music

Prince clearly had a Come vs TGE concept in mind and when WB said we won't release both records at once, the smart move would have been to shelve Come entirely and release TGE with great promotion, surfing on the success of TMBGITW. The fact that Prince agreed to postpone TGE so that Come would be released (thus dooming both records to commercial failure) suggests that Prince was fond of Come, and wanted it to be part of his discography'a narrative. Clearly, Prince liked the material.

This is a well put point.

Further, in the UK, I seem to remember, Come was promoted heavily at launch. The weer posters around London for the album - bus-stop posters even! - Radio One had a Come Day, playing the album throughout the day running up to the launch and, of course, there was the video release of the Paisley Park concert.

There are some strong songs on Come, and it is an album I enjoy - more than The Gold Experience actually - but it does pale into insignificance when you place it alongside Exodus. And it suffered horribly from the dispute over the name change etc. I reckon.

I was chatting it up with a dude about my age this afternoon at work while listening to Thriller. Asked him the "who was more bad ass?" question, Prince or MJ. He said MJ. When I winced, shook my head and asked why, he answered "popularity".

I countered with "who was the better MUSICIAN?" and he acquiesced. Some folks just judge stuff by how many OTHER people like it and it's baffling to me. Some of my favorite artists barely scratched the top 100 and even a lot of albums by my favorite popular bands are among the lower sellers in their catalogs (Animals - Pink Floyd, Prescence - Led Zeppelin, One Hot Minute - The Red Hot Chilli Peppers).

Back on topic though. Come grew on me a bit over time. I remember being underwhelmed with it when I first got it but loved the first 2 tracks, Pheremone, Race, and fucking adored Let It Go. Looking back, hard to recall why I was so down on it. I think it had a lot to do with listening to cassettes and Papa, Dark, Solo and Orgasm were not only all on one side but the hardest tracks on the record for me to get into. I don't like ballads much and Dark was just another one I'd heard a hundred times before. Papa was a novelty track. Solo and Oragasm were just...meh...I don't know what those were.

There also wasn't much GUITAR work on this record, or anything resembloing a rock song, so that bugged me some. For whatever reason, as much as he loved to play it, Prince seemed to bury his guitar talent an awful lot, and even when he showcased it (Gold, Chaos and Disorder) it felt watered down less sonic then what I'd seem him do live (see "Fury" on 3121. WTF Happened there?).

Lastly, I think a certin lack of enthusiasm for Prince amongst my friends and social circle may have had something to do with it. Nobody besides me seemed to care too much about him and everyone was into Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots, Beastie Boys and stuff like that. It didn't bother me, but there's a certain element of every party you go to, they're playing other shit which led to "no buzz". At least for me.

I'd say The Black Album was as close as he got to what you're describing. Or maybe parts of Emancipation (Slave, Human Body, New World). Only thing I ever heard him really do that recalled NiN was the outro to "In This Bed I Scream" and certain parts of Rave, which everyone seems to hate.

None of those songs have that industrial touch like Loose does. Its been widely spoken of here that he was into what Trent was doing at that time. HTF do you get The Black Album as being close? That was 87ish, way before Industrial etc. came into popularity etc. There's nothing Industrial about The Black Album.

I hear the NIN influence on Loose in some of those synth jabs that make up the skeleton of the song. In his vocal delivery as well, he seems to be apeing Trent.

I said it was CLOSE, not the same. Bob George, Dead on It, Superfunkacalifragisexy....I'll argue for those as being in the NiN wheelhouse. And certainly in terms of being close to "Loose". I suppose it depends on what parts of the songs you focus on but TBA sits up quite nicely against Pretty Hate Machine and tracks like "Up Above It"

I know your'e one of the resident music experts aroud here that like to lecture and "inform" people but my plebe ears can here it. I also think a lot of Led Zepplein songs are funky as shit. Strip them down and listen to them structurally.

You do know that people experience and absob art through different lenses, perception, rythyms, vibes, backgrounds and psychological makeup, right? It's not math or chemistry- it's ART - and your definitive take on things robs it of its berth and makes it a chore for people that you percive as not as attuned to things as you are, which turns them off to the experience. I hear what I hear. My ears are not yours.

What if I said I can see similarities between Rembrandt and Picasso? Because I can. Am I doing it wrong? SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY EYES? What if I said Pink Floyd did several funky tracks?
