Possessed? Maybe. Owned, most certainly.

People who want to believe in the occult and conspiracy theories will see them everywhere, same as those who see God in everything. However, can one of you conspiracy theorists point out somewhere where Prince mocked God and the Bible, I find that one harder to swallow than anything else. Dude was ALL about love for God.

You cannot be a Prince fan and ignore all of that, because Prince himself WAS into all of these things and a lot of his music IS about these things.

I acknowledge that Prince loved his conspiracy theories but that doesn't mean I have to agree with them, take them seriously at any level beyond metaphor or think it was one of his better qualities.

As for the mocking, I don't think he ever mocked God openly, but he definitely sent out ambiguous (or conflicting) spiritual messages, which is equivalent to mocking God's message.

But then again, he might not have been talking about the same 'God' all along, who knows.

cloveringold85 said a lot of his songs "mock the Bible and God", I can't think of a a single song that does this. If you want to tell me it is your religions viewpoint that he is wrong and and he is actually mocking God, that's fine, you can have your religion; but it'd be pretty disingenuous for someone to say that Prince was doing it purposely.

full of resentment and shame.

Even they don't care about their own shit,

They have the guts to display all their stupidity for the world to see,

It's 2018 alright.

I can understand you can get scared by the song.
" prince " is a dark, roaring album.
Prince boasts about his renewed inspiration, and "7"
sounds like "The Cross" came back, all angry and vengeful.
This shit is cryptic. And deep. And kinda scary,
and very, very apocalyptic.

Years later, "7" would be defeated by "The Word" by forfeit
(axe indisputability in the last round), passing on the top position
in SKipper's hippie-rock gospels collection.

But getting scared of the song to the point of insanity,
man, woman, get a shrink. C'm'on let's do somethin'.

Wow. Those first three paragraphs sum up so much of the world right now. Brexit here in UK is all rant and blaming Europeans instead of realities closer to home. You've essentially reiterated the Prince lyric in Way Back Home.."so many people in this world are born dead but I ..I was born alive" .

That lyric absolutely smacked me when i first heard it. Still does. Iget it tho..it's not an arrogance. Its saying you look at all these people who are so vocal but come from a place of such homogenised brainwashing. It's like we are in the Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I can see tho why folk may see prince as "other" but in terms of salaciousness..bad behaviour lyrically usually leads to consequences.certainly not in satans favour...

He's bang on but I woukd actually use this against MJ. It belies his awareness i.e. shows the image is actually quite honed and cynical. I really don't like this man. Whatever the truth is about his private life he's certainly a "groomer" with his image. He makes me massively uncomfortable and his audience cheering? You don't obsess about albums like Bad and cheer along to economic/ artistic debate. If that was ones bag you'd wouldn't get satisfaction out of such high level product as MJ music. Its fun. Its good. It aint nooo revelation which warrants analysis. Which lets face it nobofy has done since his death. Its just been enjoyed. Prince has had articles and studues done about his insights and cultural relevance.

Satanism is a creation of Christianity - nothing more, nothing less.

The Church of Satan, founded by Anton LaVey, is essentially atheistic and doesn't believe or accept Satan as a deity, merely a symbol of rebellion and independence.

Occult means hidden. It is not necessarily suggestive of Satanism.

I think you may want to ask this question to cloveringold85 directly since it was the orger who initially mentioned this. All I said was that he had indeed repeatedly given very ambiguous spiritual messages in the first half of his career and that it was no accident.

What i'm getting at is that I don't think he was very ambiguous about his spiritual messages. There were years of conflict about whether sex and money are allowed with God but the idea that you should praise God was never questioned, just the method. Maybe we're making the same point.

Quite possibly. The 'method' however is what makes a big difference. A lot of artists being promoted by the industry often have to rework their image and become over-sexualised before they can reach the top. If you observe other prominent artists' careers, it becomes clear that placing the emphasis on 'sex' is probably one of the main conditions of accessing the realms of stardom. And Prince doesn't seem to have escaped that rule.

.

I have seen that video. I thought of posting it here, but I knew that it would not be received well. eek

.

It's no mystery that Prince's music was filled with subliminal and cryptic messages and his music was very sexually-explicit. Prince pushed androgyny as far as he could -- and he was misunderstood; people did not get who he was. Was he straight or gay? I think it was all just a part of his act.

.

Now, getting into the satantic stuff. The entire Purple Rain album is about worship and the occult. If you don't think so -- then, you are a foolish person.

.

Look at Prince's first album, and everything else he did thereafter. All the transformations -- alter ego's -- he even told Oprah that he had two people inside of him (his words).

.

A lot of his songs mock the Bible and God. Was it just his way of expressing himself? What it art?

.

He told people "You don't have to do the things I did." He had regrets.

.

I think he was manipulated by the music industry. You can see as he got older -- he moved away from all that, and he became just "Prince".

.

Then again -- do we really know who Prince was at all? I think he enjoyed being a mystery. nod

What was occultic about the Purple Rain album? Yes, there is a lot about God in the album, but I can't point to anything occultic. Give some examples of when Prince mocked God or the Bible?

If you listen to his music, it's easy to see that he had some sort of spiritual battle going on within him. He believed deeply in God, but he had this lust thing going on that came out in his music. I don't think that he was possessed. He was just an ordinary human being who was dealing with ordinary human flaws.

Well in regards the occult, Prince certainly had an interest to the point where he played around with some popular culture ideas of it. Someone was saying earlier that occult doesn't mean satanism necessarily, and while I agree with this, there's no getting away from the fact that the pop culture version of it generally does go hand in hand with satanism, and I think it's safe to say that this was an idea Prince was bouncing off with his imagery. I doubt he was off reading Aleister Crowley or anything but he was using the idea of reading Alesteir Crowley to tap into the 1980 public scares/fantasies about the occult. Being called what he was called he liked to play with these ideas of royalty and, of course, royalty are always caught up in sexual and occultic public mutterings that never go much beyond rumour.

Throughout his entire career Prince was always great at playing off expectations, using popular signifiers for one thing but in a different context, like putting in backwards masking but making it about loving God. Eventually he could play off his own public image to write a song like Cream, which sounds like it's full of double entendres without really containing any at all. He was being clever, but he was also just having fun. We know he loved to mess with people in private with prank phonecalls and the like so I can imagine he loved to mess with the public as well, putting things in their minds without actually saying them and then being able to claim innocence. Believing in God, to my mind, was the only thing he never joked about, he saw no problem in releasing straight up earnest tracks like God or The Cross.

The occultic thing reminds me of people saying he was a goth. He wasn't really a goth in the same way the Cure or Sisters of Mercy or whoever are goths, but he defintely played with some of the gothic ideas and imagery, mixing and matching as he saw fit to serve his own purposes. In fact, you can probably use the above as a template for any genre - rock, pop, funk, punk, prog, synth-pop, whatever, he dipped his toe into them all but pursued his own singular vision. Which is why we can can often say other artists remind us of Prince. He's a genre onto himself.

homogenised brainwashing, it's a reccurring subject in the arts.
Prince's take on it is surely moving.

It's what Giorgio Romero does on "Night Of The Living Dead" and subsequent movies,
The real subject is the "Mall of America" living dead.
Question is: "are you going to be swallowed into the global loss of personality mass consumption spreads?"

Lucio Dalla does it in "Ballerino" (1980):
"Se capissero vedendoti ballare
di essere morti da sempre
anche se possono respirare."

If only they could understand watching you dance
they've been dead for ever
even if they can breathe

...but I'm quite sure it goes back to some greek book. The discussion of the
catatonic state of the masses by brain-washing
is pretty old. Plato's cave? No, not "plateau in a cave", you dirty mind...

Poor Satan. He gets so much blame for everything I almost feel sorry for the poor bastard.
How convenient it is for the man to play yo-yo with the ever-changing amount of spirituality life's actions require.
Truth is, the top 50 executives at Goldman Sachs, we don't know their name
and they're sure not showing their faces on the media.
Satan my ass. These are real people fucking with the planet,
living as I type, it's not some supranatural entity.

Not everything in this world is Satan's fault.
There are fuckers in this world, my friend. They're just being very, very discreet.
They're not dangerous as they are numb by their own power. If water and crops are just an abstract variable,
you're pretty much fucked in the head, hence the coke and the whores.

This is the kind of guy, for the most, who carries the globalized wallet in his pocket.
The wallet of the Big Human Family, trusted into the hands of the worst tiny dick sociopaths
whose mother didn't love/spank/yell at/talk/understand enough, or too much,
and they use it as an excuse to fuck up the world. And me. And you. And your neighbour.

Have another cube of Artic Ice, while it lasts.

Lawd, I'm ranting again.
I wonder how noisy I'll be in the nursery home.
I hope I go deaf so I can blast Skipper to 11.

Nobody who believes in that type of spiritual world who hangs out on the site believes Prince was a prophet of Satan. People who have those type of strong beliefs don't listen to secular music and preach strongly against it. To attempt to bait the religious people on this board into a half azzed debate especially when there is an entire section set aside for people to openly lay their own religious convictions on the table to debate, rings as disingenuous and self-service to me.

lets go to the backmasked message at the end of Darling Nikki. You really think the laughter at the end of that message showed his "sympathy" to anything Biblical? He was laughing at the idea of the "Lord coming soon"....and put a message like that at the end of that song. honestly, I wonder what his view is now....wonder if he's still laughing? neutral confusedI take no joy in typing this, it's all very sad to me. You actually credibly assert that people 'sell their souls'? That kind of opinion may have been excusable 200 years ago but is archaic at best today.

Many of you here didn't seem to get the message that the satanic panic was just that - an unfounded hysteria with zero credibility.

The real danger here is not the imaginary threats of 'Satanism' and 'dark forces' but the mentality behind some of these comments from Christians. You always were the threat historically and factually and you still are.

[Edited 3/5/18 12:05pm]

There's all kinds on here... facebook... twitter.... reddit.... the neighborhood. At least in the neighborhood they got no soapbox.

Both of the main protagonists in this thread joined prince.org days after Prince's death. Tells me all I need to know, as if their motives weren't already clear.

Seriously? Now fans on his website are getting ready to be berated about how Prince was possessed by Satan in detail?

i saw that vid on youtube, how seriously can you take any vid on youtube? It hurt as a fan that they used a pic from 2015 or so when the period when he was wild and rebellious was 30 years before that, he evolved a lot, go back 30 years in anyones life and you're gonna find some goofy shit.

Check out this video on youtube, claiming that Prince was demonic and one of Satan's "musical prophets". This guy's interpretation of Prince's lyrics are so off base that it's hilarious lol https://youtu.be/yeHmoVGN1AM

The devil really does have all the best tunes. The comments section is something else. How gullible and nuts some people are. lol

you don't even know until you've lived with christians, the need to project and judge is just relentless with them.

I am not sure whether it is me you are referring to here but it is you who are not credible now. Judging someone's joining date to un-validate their argument is far worse than trying to seek the truth in all things. I am not sure what your own motives are on here either, but this is a discussion forum not a place to make unecessary judgements on other people's joining dates.

But since you mentioned it, I originally joined here in 2007, when the 21 Nights in London was announced. Until then, I had no idea such a site existed, but what difference does it make? Perhaps you could just stay on topic and explain to me what you think that signature in Darling Nikki is supposed to be about, since you seem to know so much more than me.

For your information, I am a long term Prince fan and spent most of my growing up years listening to him, I was young and being French a lot of the lyrics went over my innocent head. One day, I had a strange premonition that I was going to meet him, but I never even took any actions to make this happen. In 2007, after attending a few aftershow during his 21 nights in London I took my courage in both hands and spoke with him a few times, I also gave him a card to thank him for the shows, which we both played with during the show (the microphone and guitar pedals were right in front of me) and that eventually resulted in him inviting me onstage to dance for almost 30 minutes at the end of another aftershow, the best I had ever been to.

When you have held someone's hand and had them holding you close, you have a whole different perspective than being a fan of someone you only saw on an album cover. Our paths have crossed and that can never be undone. Since he has died there has not been one single day when I haven't remembered those moments and missed him immensely. I joined here again because it felt better to talk about him with fans, but that doesn't mean I don't have questions.

I have been wondering a lot about what happened to him and why. I know for certain that there is a hidden world out there, and a lot of spiritual battles going on. This is real and Prince, just as Michael, was trying to warn us about it. Sometimes the information is right before us but we just don't want to see it because it challenges us too. Out of curiosity, what did you make of that MJ video posted above? Did you listen to any of it? Here it is again: https://www.youtube.com/w...x0Un9K5dKQ

there are old threads about darling nikki that make for great reading. some said that nikki was an old pseudonym for satan and that it symbolized prince signing his soul to the devil. P was into the occult to some degree but he was into a lot of things, i believe he stabilized as he got older. It's normal for young people to search and the devil/soul thing wouldn't be the first time an american or even european composer mentioned the idea, it's been done many times and most of the time i don't think it's meant literally.
