I'll refer back to my previous post on this subject, I would be very disapointed with this disc lol. But the wonderful thing is that you can make this disc and everybody here can make their disc. In this respect it's one if his greatest albums, everyone can get a 12 track disc with no filler.

Emancipation is an outstanding album.
If someone like R Kelly or D'Angelo had released something similar, no doubt many here would have said that this is the album Prince should have released!

I did not get the whole Emancipation. I know what it stood. Free yourself from someone's bondage. I always thiught it might that not only Prince was trying to free himself under Warner Brothers graps. But also away from Mayte Garcia. I faintly recall that this album was released on Nov. 12, 1996. This is Mayte birthday. It rose my suspicions on what hidden messages that Prince had in his music. confused

why would he be trying to free himself from Mayte Garcia, when she inspired a lot of the songs, the recordings took place during his courting/marriage to her?

Yeah I think you are an (anti-Mayte) person? and creating some serious fiction there.

D'Angelo? someone who copied Prince?

naw to both of those guys, R Kelly for sure was good at what he did, but not on the same level of Prince's best work.

Even Prince did very little performing from this 3 disc set, it just wasn't exciting.

Emancipation is just fine as it is. And hearing some of the stuff that didn't make the cut, I would have been happy with the 50 track album he orginally talked about.

I think that had more to do with his personal circumstances at that time than his belief in the music.

It must've been hard going out there promoting and performing songs from Emancipation, an album so full of hope and joy for his impending fatherhood, given all that went down.

TRC was released 3 years after NPS.

OK? Not everything I said was meant to chronological.

"Oddly, Prince stepped away from that plastic sound for subsequent The Rainbow Children, but peeked in on it with NewPowerSoul, yet stepped away again with Musicology..."
That part sounded pretty chronological to me.

Confession--every time people run Arms of Orion down, I play it. Not loud, and I don't dance--but I enjoy every second of it. Like what you like. I'm leaving the door open on my eventually liking it. I don't expect it to happen, but it might.

Except it seems to say that NPS came in between The Rainbow Children and Musicology? I mean, there's several years of productivity (The Truth, NPS, and all those NPGMC tracks) before The Rainbow Children. Once he left that sound, he didn't really go "back to it" for anything. He stayed with it for awhile, including NPS. (TrivialPursuit--I get that you weren't really worrying about the chronology that much--but he really didn't leave the sound behind quickly).

Prince had big plans for Emancipation; I remember reading about how there was this thick file of promotional strategies for it, but unfortunately, in his private life it was just all going horribly wrong. Frankly, it's astonishing how he was able to struggle through all of that. But of course, some have said, understandably, that actually he never really did.

I've always liked Emancipation, and quite a bit of it I love.

It does seem a bit bloated, but I'd say the same thing for anybody's 2-disc or 3-disc album.

They mean it has a different sound to his other albums. But I'm with you on it sounding generic of the time. The 'edgy' tracks on this album especially. Embarrassingly so. Prince was still playing catchup by this point (as he had been since Graffitti Bridge with New Power Generation).

He basically accepted himself, in one sense, after The Rainbow Children and the One Night Alone tour, and stopped trying to emulate the times and stop rapping and being 'gangsta' (although there was a fair bit of Pharrel emulation on Musicology etc).

.

I only really think Mr Happy and Da Da Da are guilty of that on Emancipation. And Right Back Here In My Arms is very New Jack Swing, which was outdated by 1996.

The absolute worst on Emancipation IMO. I was listening to the album the other day and that track came on and it took me by surprise. I'd completely wiped it from my mind and had forgotten the horrors.
