subjective, matter of taste, i think both of them had lots of room for improvement. Hendrix was sloppy live, Prince wasn't perfect either but no one is. In terms of impact, legacy with the instrument, no one comes close to Hendrix, so much so that people forget all the other stuff he did well(showman, songwriter, producer).

true. Jimmy was a surprisingly good songwriter. He was a guitar playing innovator. But at 27, Prince was a better singer, dancer, piano player (I assuming) , songwriter, and was a pretty damn good guitarist.

morris hayes said something interesting, he said steve vai had Morris give prince a guitar or something because he was his hero, steve vai is technically better than both, he once said he was better player than jimi, not in an egotistical manner, but he said stated he was only following a style that jimi pioneered. Steve's awesome and humble.

Sorry to hijack thread but...

Almost 50 (!) years after his death there are still 'new' Hendrix recordings being released. He was active in the studio and live performance for pretty much only 4 years.

Prince was active for 10 times that length...there could be new recordings released for hundreds of years. Seriously. Just blows my mind a little bit.

I remember that I bought a DVD of a Hendrix concert and I really tried to enjoy it but.......it's just not my jam. When I first heard Prince playing the guitar I felt like I was just touched by an angel. lol I've never heard someone play the guitar like that before.

I must say tho, Hendrix playing the national anthem was really, really good. It's my favourite version of the US anthem smile

ya, and i think they really have to goose up most of jimi's stuff and there have been cases of fake jimi releases. Prince has so much stuff, I'd even venture to say that a good percentage of us orgers aren't even super familiar with his official releases. I've listened to everything but not with the same interest I did his seminal recordings. that is, i can't name every track off of most of his post 80's albums even though i know them when i hear them, it's not like when i was a kid and i adored every little thing about an album, the font, the colors.

Some very interesting points made by everyone I believe that prince and jimi where both workaholics I remember clapton once saying jimi never had a guitar out of his hands they were both genius but genius isnt anything without work and they both worked there arses off.Personally at 27 I think jimi was better.

one thing i always say in regards to hendrix, no one expressed themself better with the guitar in my years of observing than him. His rage came through, no one gets close to that feel and that counts for a lot in rock music, in fact, it's usually more important than technique.

Totally agree. I am a huge fan of both. I personally believe Hendrix is the better guitar player. But I love Prince a lot on the guitar, he is great too in his own way.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

While Prince is my favorite guitar player, I don't have him ranked in the top five of greatest all-time guitar players. That being said, if you've never heard Hendrix's instrumental version of "Born Under a Bad Sign," I'd suggest that and "If 6 Were 9." I'm not guaranteeing that you will like them, but who knows. I got a boatload of Hendrix on my phone, but I don't listen to him as much since my father and uncle died a couple of years ago. They were both big Hendrix fans and introduced me to him. (Art, sports, and politics were big topics for me and my Pops, and it hurts too much to listen to Hendrix now and not be able to talk with my Pops about that genius.) So, now that I think about it, I may have a sentimental connection to Hendrix, but I loved his work years before they passed. My high school years were spent between Prince and Hendrix with, of course, lots of other stuff. Anyway, just a thought.

Hendrix, for sure.

Prince is my favorite musician, but Hendrix is the most influential and innovative rock guitarist. He played with emotion, virtuosity, and creativity, in combination still unbeaten.

Purple Haze, Are You Experienced, All Along the Watchtower, Fire — you’ve got a guitar clinic right there.

Prince easily - Hendrix had moments of brilliance and was the most advanced for his era, but by late 1969 - 1970 (When Hendrix was 27), he was past his peak and hopelessly messed up on drugs. Hendirx's peak was the Experience era in my opinion (Age 24 - 26).

.

Prince aged 27 was very clean, focussed and still writing the best music of his career (27- 28), but was still blowing people away with the Parade Hit and Run tour and the 27th birthday jam in 1985. Although 85/86 he was leaning more towards dance, his guitar skills were still there.

.

It is hard to say this, as I love Hendrix and I consider him the greatest guitarist of all time, he was an alien who came to earth to show us how we think about guitar.

Jimi is The King. Prince is in his court though.

For me, it basically goes

Hendrix

Page

Prince

Hendrix. By far. There is nothing in Prince's 1980s guitarwork that is as powerful as The Star Spangled Banner or Machine Gun.

What appears to me is that Prince was a better guitar player in his later years than in the 80's, despite what some hysterions have claimed. Similarly, I find ONA much superior in terms of piano than Intimate Moments, again despite what same hysterions claimed back in 2002. Now I don't play any instrument so I can only judge from a listeners' perspective, and I'm open to any guitar or piano player (as opposed to non musicians) challenging my claim.

as i said before it's all subjective and depends on criteria used, i've heard a lot of scathing reviews of claptons and Page's playing. Not being a guitarist I can only judge so much but I'll say this, in the studio it's a lot easier to get something great than it is onstage. Live is where it's really at.

Prince was better as he got older, he was a better singer too and as much as people might disagree I think he got cleaner in his production. It's the same for a lot of artists though, their seminal work was done comparatively haphazardly and with limited means. Elvis' sun sessions were about as primitive as moder music gets but it's still better than most of the stuff that came after. But by the 70s' elvis' productions were far superior even if the product wasn't. there's an interview with him laughing about how "funny" the early records sound.

I agree with subjective. For example I always felt Jimmy Page was a sloppy player. Same with Neil Young. Yet many swear they’re both brilliant. Sorry I don’t get the brilliance in this. Sounds awful to me.

Yep he said guitar was a signature Vai 8-string and when he gave it Prince looked at it and replied: “I can do it with 6”. lol

Here's Bo Diddley at 27 years old sounding better (at his own sound) than Prince or Hendrix ever would or could. Does that make him better?

or Ricky Wilson at 26 or so playing his own 5-string style better than Prince or Hendrix ever did

this feels like a very silly discussion.

Interesting, but he is only really playing basic rhythm chords on that guitar. Still, it was streets ahead of the time for music. The dude on the maracas is going hard, I think Mick Jagger stole that style,in the early days he would shaking 4 maracas while he was singing.

.

This maraca dude just stands there gliding, shaking them and looking intense.

At 27 Hendrix. But Prince surpassed him in later years and did more awesome solos.
