I totally agree with you. There will never be another. Just sad for all of us, but we at least have an abundance of mysic. And in the end, wouldn't that be what he would want to leave us with? Bittersweet.

I appreciate the fact that he got cleaner as he got older. It showed maturity, however, he never stopped being wild and free.

Does anyone feel the soul of prince looking into yours in the bottom picture.
It makes me feel connected to him. I can't feel sad. His energy is forever available to connect with you. What does he telll you?

I pick the clean prince, his spiritual monkness in his meditation room. That guy
I love all his music, even the weird stuff. I think Crystal Ball is an epic trance. Experience and the funky of it and the spaces in between make it even funkier. Does prince like frank Zappa... this track feels like that maybe

I imagine Prince makes beauty still and gets to feel our love

The 'dirty' Prince was fun for a while but I felt it came from a shallower place and even though I will continue to appreciate most these tracks, I think many of them are overshadowing another rather important aspect of his legacy.

I personally find the 'cleaner' Prince reaches a deeper core and has more relevance especially since his passing. Therefore I now tend to listen to his post-1994 work a lot, because (I feel) it has far more depth/soul than the earlier part of his career. Though of course that doesn't mean Prince wasn't soulful before or that he ever stopped using double entendres...

From stunningly beautiful love songs such as 'Space Universal Love Remix', 'Call My Name', 'U Make My Sun Shine', 'Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife', 'The Dance', introspective tracks like 'Reflection' or the brutally honest 'Don't Play Me' as well as the 'Holy River' there is still a huge amount of solid yet underated gems waiting to be discovered and appreciated by many more people.

This one was written during his most unabashed era (graphic imagery of rivers of blood, oozing stuff, peach juice, etc.).
I don't think spirituality ever left the building, I would say "Call My Name" is über-dirty, in a good way.
I mean it starts quite innocently, but you can feel the desire underneath, and you know this is going to end pushing and thrusting.

I find "It" very sexual-spiritual during the last minutes (the instrumental part).
The darker it gets, the more you hear Prince moaning for light, trapped (tied?) in some basement.
I always wonder if "It" came from "Venus In Furs". Strange for a guy obssessed with chains for a while, that he never covered it.
"Severine! Severine!" he would whisper.

"The Cross" is kind of dirty obscene in his proclamation.
The nakedness, the absence of reverb (which is the whole point of the album, except for "It"and its lasers and neons,
and "U Got The Look" for the shiny stroboscopic guitar moans).
"The Cross" is not obscene in the lyrics, but the delivery.
Like wearing his faith on his sleeve like his penis on his forehead.
It's there, there's nothing you can do about it. God Is Alive (the live chant, not Mavis').

Naked, like wearing a trench-coat on stage. Bare and true, hair cut with a silex myself, thank U.
There is a lot to be said about SKipper
and his long fight against his predestined shyness.
He earned his confidence through the years, the hard way,
it didn't came out of the blue.

Not "dirty" Prince - I can't believe i've reached the age when i have to begrudgingly admit a few lyics now make me slightly squirm in my seat - but "free, brave, genuine, unapologetic" Prince. He didn't give a s**t. He went there. Later on it wasn't quite so in your face, but "clean" Prince was still very sensual and sexy. All along he enjoyed being naughty. The man ran hot. Advancing age, Jehovah's Witness doctrine, and frigid Minnesota winters may have eventually tamed that fire, but there was never a chance of putting it out!

"Sex" is an aural example of a Dirty song with a Clean sound.
You gotta love this sampled orchestra bits, the ancestor of the fake little horns in "Face Down" ("Orchestra!").
Camille goes crazy in a urban world wrapped in plastic.
Everything is dangerous, it has to be good.

Whereas "Shockadelica", he could sing the phone book, I wouldn't care, let's ball.
For years I went without fully understanding the lyrics, except for "Nasty Bitch! Get Up! U B layin' on my Guitar.".
He's not hurting the girl, actually it's a lesbians catfight, given Camille is a Girl.

Talking about "best scream", the "Whoo!" following the "dum, du-dum, du-dum, dum-du-doooh-dap!"
is just incredible.

I don't know who the engineer was for the Schockadelica sessions, but this is among the best Stooges-like Prince,
along with "Witness 4 The Prosecution" (the 3D version, a.k.a. a proper FLAC'd vynil).

It doesn't get any sexyer-punkier that that: there's tongue in cheek, laughs, incredible gimmicks,
ejaculating axe, tongue elsewhere's, smell of doom (probably too good a smell in Prince's land: he's doomed to commit betrayal,
it's not my fault Your Honor, she's an Irresistible Bitch, I'm Just A Girl, and I have proof, see: for you I'll dance naked a ballet.
No, seriously. I can. Here, let me unzip these boots, besides I'm dying wearing these heels all day, Girl, how can U?).

It sounds so dirty. In the most good way. The whole mix, the whole production,
it really is a piece of art. The intertwning of parts. Sexual arrangements.
Gritty, distorted, elastic, liquid. Hushed.
Tongue noises. Mike licking?

He sure loved to slurp on his lollipop during the nineties — now that's really gross.
And paradox: he was ultra-clean in his looks, cf. the Jeff Katz pic with the lollipop. So sexy.
The mouthful of cereal I can take. Add soy milk or it'll scratch.

I mean, "Shockadelica", the intro alone. Just these few seconds.
The sticky stuff in the back, I don't want to know what instrument does that,
just before the Clean "Twaaannnggg!" squirts in your face, that biting leopard,
and Dirty Camille simultaneously eructs

the good ol' synchronous, unintented-so-soon, adolescent orgasmic "Yeeeeaaaaaahhhh!",
with God knows what liquid resonating in that Deep Throat of Hers. Saliva, probably. Yucch.
It's cartoonish. It's hilarious. It's so honest.

No reberv, just the two of them at 11.
Or 7, I can't ever quite remember.

So much fun.
No one could be funny and sexy as the same time like our Tracy was.
The falsetto in the first Chorus. It's all there in the back. Put your headphones on.

I think Space Universal Love Remix was actually a turning point in his career when the flesh vs spirit balance started tilting heavily in the latter's direction...

As for the 'clean' vs 'dirty' interpretations, I guess it's all based on our own understanding of 'good' vs 'evil' or even 'human' vs 'beast' and I think the later Prince made it pretty clear which was which when he regularly pointed out that he was not talking about anything 'physical' (Satisfied). Plus his constant references to God and the Bible left no doubt about it either.

But at the end of the day, he was human like the rest of us therefore not immune to temptations of all kinds. That said, the Bible never said that sensuality was a bad or dirty thing (see Song of Solomon), but there is a massive contrast in tones and imageries between say 'Scarlett Pussy' and 'Revelation'. In Don't Play Me' he actually points out that his only 'competition' was him 'in the past' and that the only 'only fame' is 'The light that comes from God and the joy U get to say his name'.

Maybe the OP should clarify what he really meant by 'Dirty' or 'Clean' but I think deep down we all know. But as you've said, Prince was probably still struggling to free himself from all of this things that tie all of us down and prevent us from being 'Free'.

When you are totally free, you don't even feel the need to shock people with extreme looks, words or crudeness, because what people think doesn't matter anymore except for true love.

And I think he finally got there in the end.

No, it wasn't. And neither was Gett Off or Sexy MF. It was all starting to sound fake around this time. As if he only wrote those songs because "sex sells". Or because he was running out of original ideas. Or because he was trying to catch up with the "bitch and ho" of hip hop, which was much dirtier than he ever was.

I thought the same. Gett Off and Sexy MF were 'easy' songs, there was not much to the lyrics, unlike songs like Head that actually painted a picture beyond the actual title subject.

.

The music was tight, but beyond that, nothing like Irresistable Bitch (the bells were wicked by themselves) or Erotic City
