Though it might not be metal there’s a London show from 2014 where 3EG does a version of Mars that rocks about as hard as anything.

Bizarrely, during the D&P era Prince's guitar sound was reported as including the BOSS Metalzone stomp box, which is generally considered by guitarists to be one of the worst pedals ever released by BOSS. Still I guess Prince something he wanted out of it, that sort of "swarm of bees" thing, which worked with all the extra processing he used in those days.

I always thought their performance of Bambi was on the Metal edge @ the March 8th 1982 First Avenue show

I'd recommended the Undertaker set, the songs on there have hard rocky edges. Pretty damn awesome, in fact that is something I'd love to see remastered and brought out on a commercial release, that would be the shit!

Also 3rdeyegirl is worth checking out, in my own personal opinion he was the rockiest he's ever been with those girls, check out the end of their "I could never take the place of your man" and you'll see what I mean, they do a great rocky version of "guitar"! The big metal one from them though has go to be the live Plectrumelectrum, it's all guitars and drums, class!

I read somewhere that Plectrumelectrum came from Donna and then it was reworked a bit. Reminds me of Led Zeppelin’s The Ocean. I do think there were times when 3EG rocked as hard as anyone out there. I remember after 3EG performed on SNL Justin Timberlake tweeted about it the next day mind still blown. I often wonder how nervous Donna must have been playing with a guitar legend like Prince.

The last minute of Let's Go Crazy, if not metal itself, has the ferocitiy of the best metal.

Indeed. In Fact wheter he played metal music or not at some pint in his carreer, it's does not matter, either way he got all the attitude or more than the metal heads.

Maybe it’s just because of the timeframe when it came out but the end guitar solo of LGC always reminded me of Van Halen. There was a story in The NY Times once wondering whether LGC was Prince’s answer to Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Basically saying ha, you have to hire EVH, I can do it all on my own.

The closest he ever got to metal was 'Sister' live in 88. The rest is heavy rock, with Dreamer probably being the hardest of those. A lot of his heaviest 'sound' tended to be punk influenced, (like Killing In A Soda Shop).

He clearly had a preference for heavy, almost prog rock (Led Zepplin), rather than metal (Metallica). A heavy guitar solo isn't metal. Its much more than that.

What it is metal then?

Metallica is more influenced by Sabbath than Zeppelin but every hair metal band of the 80s wouldn’t have existed were it not for Zeppelin.

The comment on Sister from 1988 is close...an interlude during the Vibe television show was a also a beginning. Mike Scott was on guitar...

I heard from someone at Paisley once that Prince would occasionally play something you would not believe just to show whoever was present, that he could. This person mentioned Primus being one band he'd play...

Being a pretty big fan of metal myself, the absolute closest he got to it (for me, at least) was the last two tracks off of Small Club (the renditions of "It's Gonna be a Beauriful Night" and "Rave to the Joy Fantastic"). Even though it's essentially him just soloing, the suite is incredibly hard and heavy. I wish he ventured into that territory a little more than he did. It could have yielded some pretty amazing stuff. Im shocked Im the first one to mention it, being that Small Club is essential listening for folks like us.

Get in your mouse, and get out of here!
