anyone else feel that 3121 is grossly underrated?

I was listening to 3121 yesterday, the 1st time in a long while, I have it mixed in with Musicolgy, 2010 and Planet Earth... I must say of those albums, 3121 is far better... Anyone agree with that?

Actually, I find it grossly overrated. Like Musicology, I skip over half the CD.
If it's magic, then why can't it be everlasting.....

I like 3121. Took awhile for the opening song to grow on me but I like almost every one now. Black Sweat is a masterpiece!

The 3121 album to this day is one of my favorite Prince albums.I love all the songs. It debuted at number one on the charts if I remember correctly. Also, the promo videos and tv appearances Prince did for this album are great too.

It just doesn't pull me in like many Prince albums. Prefer Musicology from the same era.

Yes. Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth and Lotus/MPLS was a good run of great albums and proof that some of his best work was released in the second half of his career.

I think "love" could have been a hit if well promoted, with a video and single edit.

I love 3121. If i recall correctly, Prince released this electrofunk album before Timberlake's similar one the same year and JT had the audacity to say he was the one bringing sexy back..LOL. And when P joked mildly imo about sexy having not gone anywhere, JT had a bit of a hissy fit (well, he wrote a bit of a diss song.)

.

BTW< I like both albums and don't mind JT usually. But 47 year old Prince was still sexier than JT to me and he did it without Timberland or any curse words. The Dance is sexy as a mofo..

3121 is good and should not be underrated.
I love most of the songs. It's solid work to me. And this is coming from an 80s child that grew up on his 80s "peak " music. 3121 IS funky and cool. I luv it.

I like 3121. The yardstick with absolute classic Prince albums is vertiginous. As a result, I put this album down a couple of tiers.

It is an album that I would rate higher than Musicology and Planet Earth. That being said Musicology has a lot of quality material like the title track, IIWTMIYL, the Marrying Kind and Illusion coma, pimp and circumstance.

I think 3121 is a fun album with lots of highly listenable tracks. 3121 the track is a monster.

This may come as a surprise, even a shock to most of you, but all of Prince's post-88 albums are overrated.

Unfortunately, that autotune song that I fortunately forgot the name of, is on there, so... Really like the title track and The Word, though.

Are you referring to "Incense and Candles"?

I don't know about over or underrated, but this album and the one before brought my love for Prince back after years of disappointments. At least he was writing songs again instead of preaching or doing instrumental jams.

Yes, I feel it's definitely underrated. 3121 is a fantastic album, the Dance just blows me away. I listen to this album often.

The album contains 3 very good songs: the title track, "Black Sweat" and "Fury". Y'all can keep the rest.

I find it to be enjoyable, middle of the road Prince. Noting earth-shattering. There are few great tracks in my opinion. 3121, Lolita, Black Sweat (although the lead synth kind of hurts my ears these days on certain stereos... getting old I guess).

The rest ranges from pretty decent to not that good. Like, I'd rank Love as okay. Incense suffers from that awful auto-tune - probably my single most hated vocal affect of all time. I pretty much dispise anything that uses it. Fury was better live, but the production here neuters it. The Word - okay I guess. Get on the Boat is a solid effort, but not as strong as others in this vein.

So yeah... not bad. I pop it on once in a while.

by the way, reason for the edits: how in the hell do you put paragraph space breaks on this forum? None of the typical ways work for me.

Yea, but autotune in that song has purpose like some vocal filter -- a nice touch, it's not forced to correct his vocal... Prince is not a crap singer.
