I read that....also I saw some guy on youtube..some rapper,

seriously dissing prince for making White Music...!!!!!!!

What is white music? confused

every asshole on youtube has got some opinion, doesn't mean much. but, prince was fusing black and white from early on, white meaning the harder rock guitar as on bambi, i'm your's, but also the punk aesthetics of dirty mind, even his dancing was more punk than funk back then. Also, the wierdness, when i was young, anything a little wierd was definitely not counted as "white" offbeat and eccentric was never part of coolness so i guess in that way, he was "white", even though he was just Prince.

i guess a lot of people said that in the purple rain era. He definitely was going for the crossover, no one can really deny that but he never really left the funk behind and he actually came back to black with a vengeance after Purple Rain, he lost lots of fans who didn't like the more soulful stuff going towards sign o the times, he also alienated lots of his black audience with some of the fem imagery. Prince had a long career and a long career like that is going to have ups and downs, by the time of the musicology comeback, i think it's safe to say he was a legend and loved by many people of many persuasions. I haven't heard a lot of people whining about him selling out for a long time, but yes, after PR there were those statements. Prince did what he wanted though really, he didn't let sales run his career at all, so in that way, whatever "selling out" he did with PR just opened the door for him to do whatever the fuck he wanted later with his own studio etc..,

also, it is interesting to note that one of Prince's early mentors, I think his name was alexander Hamilton, who taught Prince in High School, has said he taught his students that they could have a number one on the black charts and that it didn't mean anything. Prince must have really taken those words to heart. Really though, i can't think of too many artists of his calibre who expressed his freedom in the way he did. when you have the three minute song for radio, there are many limitations, only the exceptional and the cutting edge are able to overcome that. What's important is that Prince was not a coward, he was artistically bold, he wasn't afraid of not selling, he did things so that he wouldn't sell just as much as he did things to ensure he did. Like I said, he pretty much did what the fuck he wanted as any great artist should.

Gotta love it when fairweather fans start coming to this site after Prince has died, to cast stones about the historic behaviour of long term hardcore fans who have been here through thick and thin, and perceived tolerable enough for Prince himself, who visited here.

I can say this from a relevetive position of safety (I've been here since the beginning and I remained supportive of nearly all of Prince work when others waivered); the heart of the org community was ripped out on April 22nd 2016, when the crazies arrived/returned, to either gossip, idolise or demonise.

i've been banned twice, i would have maybe never left without that, i don't know. I don't think being a fan necessitates being part of a board like this. I think i'm a pretty balanced fan, everything the man did wasn't gold, he had some horrible faults, did horrible things but so has everyone. I'm a springsteen fan too, as big or bigger as I am of Prince, there aren't really any intersting sites for him or for elvis but the ones i have seen aren't like this. One thing they all have in common is that people act like they own you because they are a fan of yours. they get possessive, prince fans are more like that than any fans of anyone else. So, i take exception with your fairweather fan designation, i listen to the music, i watched his videos, i learned his music, i read bios about him and I don't need your definition of fan to call myself one.

There are people who were talking ish the morning of April 21, until this thread was posted:

http://prince.org/msg/7/423313

There were people here talking smack after the Moline incident.

There were people here talking smack after HnR phase 1 was released.

There were people here talking smack after AoA and PE were released.

Not just critique and reviews of his music. Personal attacks.

Many of those involved were "long term hardcore fans". Several didn't post here afterwards for months.

Well I remember alt.music.prince being prince.hate.central. It's funny tho because one of the main albums that got shat upon was Newpowersoul and I actually like it so much more now. No, not because he died, but because it's a good bit of fun. Look, people, Prince is was genius but he was also an egocentric asshole. Let's just accept it for what it was. I don't regret any negativity I spewed on AMP. I just know that I much preferred the mystery that existed before the Internet became our lives. And I'll be on board with whatever the estate whats to offer. But please, people, Prince may not have been Hilter but he wasn't fuckin' Gandhi either.

I admit I was very angry during the ´Kirky J years´ (96-2000) and I dont regret it

Because I always thought Prince was SO great that I knew he was capable of delivering better stuff (IMO) than he was releasing. But I never hated him. Only felt bored.

And no one should feel bad or shamed for not liking an album or period. This is (or was) a site of sometimes brutal honesty. Maybe that's why Prince came here.

Many people would attack the likes of Bart or VainAndy, for being 'stuck in the past', but there is no rule that you must like new material to remain a fan and those accused probably have more Prince knowledge in their little finger than the people accusing them.

There is a danger the crazies want to whitewash Prince's weaker material and 'call out' those that don't agree with them. The reality is, they weren't here is the more difficult years and they probably don't own all of the discography.

Everything is in context of the period, and not the nostalgic glasses it can be view through now.

at any rate there are smart people here who have a lot great to say, i'm not elitist in the least but i don't see a whole lot on the elvis/mj/springsteen boards that really interest me, most of their fans are pretty basic fans, which is fine, but I tend to look at the whole package of an artist so their nuances, imperfections, ups and downs interest me a lot and so there isn't much of interest to me on their boards but they are good fans in general, at least the ones i've last checked out. Just not enough depth for me personally to join them. there are some thoughtful, bright people here, always were.

I think it is interesting how some people here want to down play or justify nastiess towards Prince on the threads. I have seen some pretty nasty stuff being said about him before and after his death. This is a fact. It is sad how after his death all of a sudden you had all these crazy people who wanted to demonized him for his cause of death and having no will. I thought it said a lot about about people who did that. Some people just needed to get off the boat a long time ago because if Prince was such a horrible this and that, Why bother with him? And I don't want to hear crap about "constructive criticism". Hitting below the belt and finding fault with every is not "constructive criticism".

vainandy was a great poster, i don't see him around much anymore but he gave reasons why he didn't like periods and they were valid reasons. he stated the reason he did not like parade was mainly because the single was kiss and he said the whole album was nothing like kiss, he was right. He was one of the fans who would have been happy if prince had kept right on in the style of 1999/purple rain, he had some great arguements, nothing wrong with a thing he said, i didn't agree with him but could see why he said some of the things he said.

I agree, most of us said some mess over the years. I particularly slamducked him for putting out Boytrouble, but I found one thread from 2002 which slams Tony M to hell, these people are calling hima turd and threatening to kill him.

.

I won't post it, but look up "Shittiest rappers" and it will come up on the first page. I didn't join until 2005, so I wrote none of that shit. Now people are interviewing and no matter how mediocre something it, we usually buy it. How many of us bought 4ever and are going to buy the new Michael Jackson playlist release on the 29th? - exactly.

Prince had his moments...that's for sure. But stop talking down to people who don't want to generalize and demonize Prince as if his only traits were those of an "egocentric asshole". NOne of us knew him personally but most of us can agree that he was a complex mass of contradictions with good and bad sides.. Trying to give a hard working and very private musician the benefit of the doubt is not an indication of sanctification. Any kind of artistic genius is not just an an egomaniac. Where is his inspiration?--just self love?

Exactly, he is deep and remembered well, there is a great interview with Peach and Black from late 2016 and Tony remembered it all, even when Prince docked him $500 for going skydiving on a tour day off "He asked if it was fun, and said was it worth $500 worth of fun?".

.

He is like an accountant now and kind of mentioned the rap was just a alternate way of making some money. He knew that there was a lot of hatred as well, and was a decent guy.

yes I mean he obviously did something right because he sold 100 million + records during his lifetime and performed arguably the greatest Super Bowl halftime show ever while it was pouring rain and over 100 million people watched live on TV. And those 2 accomplishments that I just mentioned are barely scratching the surface of his greatness.

Opposite Udo, I was suggesting his views were so anti black and so right wing, he was too racist be Dutch which are generally very open minded people, but more like the close minded xenophobic racist Boers, who are getting their just desserts after 400 years of oppressing the African people.

The only thing I'll add about folks, mostly African Americans, complaining about Prince not dating or showcasing dark skinned women throughout his career is that comes from centuries of African Americans seeing their image/bodies, history, and culture marginalized and lampooned by American media. Often, the history of African-American entertainers was a history/process of trying to make white owners and patrons/audiences feel comfortable with blackness. (Even Prince, himself, once stated in a Rolling Stone article that “Wendy makes me more acceptable. When I sneer, she smiles.”) As such, lighter skinned blacks, regardless of talent, were always more accepted/patronized than dark skinned blacks. That's not an opinion. Just do some research on the "Brown Paper Bag" Theory. Unfortunately, after centuries of living under white supremacy, many African Americans began to internalize this notion, which evolved into black self-hatred in which African Americans, themselves, perpetuated the "Brown Paper Bag" theory as a way to ingratiate themselves to the white power structure. Thus, whenever an African American who knows/understands this history sees someone like Prince who is obviously a product of the genius of the black community/black culture exclusively dating and highlighting lighter skinned women, they, for the sake of history and racial progress, must wonder, if not ask aloud, what is the reasoning for this. Is it because he just so happened to find women with whom he is intellectually, emotionally, and artistically compatible who also just happen to be of a lighter skin tone? Or, is it that he, himself, is color struck--which is merely a way of saying that he has embraced/accepted the European aesthetic of beauty--and dates these lighter skinned women as a way to make himself feel better about himself or merely as some sort of status/class symbol?

To be clear, I don't know if I've ever heard someone say that Prince doesn't have the right to date women of any complexion. However, when one understands the history of centuries of psychological warfare that African people have endured, especially in America, then one realizes that the question of Prince's dating tastes/patterns must be examined as a way to understand/measure where society is in this course/journey of race relations.

Finally, you should find a thread that was created when the "Black Sweat" video was released. There was a white member who basically called the model "ugly" as well as some other names. As such, we must ask ourselves, in light of that comment, how would Prince's white fans have reacted or embraced him had he dated mostly or exclusively dark skinned women? Of course, it's difficult to answer a hypothetical as we all feel/hope that the best of ourselves would be divulged in any situation. But, given the way many white fans reacted to The Rainbow Children, "We March," "Dear Mr. Man," many other songs, and when Prince stated during the Baltimore benefit concert that "The next time I come to Baltimore I want to play in a theatre owned by you and stay in a hotel owned by you," it is safe to say that a good number of Prince's white fans could only love him as long as he was their little racially ambiguous erotic nymph child. Yet, the moment that he, as an African-American man, began engaging issues specific to the African-American community, all hell broke loose. And, we have the threads on this site as proof.

Ultimately, all of us come to Prince for various reasons, and, at any moment/movement throughout Prince’s career, some of his fans have felt betrayed as when one white gay member of the org, Spinlight, who I greatly respect and like, said that he felt betrayed by “Dear Mr. Man” and the entire Rainbow Children album. While I understand his position, as an African-American man I also wonder why so many white fans had problems with or didn’t understand Prince’s need to address issues directly/specifically related to African Americans. As I said in my earlier post, even though The Rainbow Children is considered the racial linchpin, issues of race have always simmered just beneath the surface of Prince fandom.

Prince dated women who looked like him. His skin color preference was probably a symptom of that.

Maybe, maybe not, but you cannot ignore the history of physical and psychological oppression of African Americans, especially since Prince, himself, addressed this history as well as its effects on African Americans. As such, it was/is fair for African-American fans to discuss the issue/practice (not his right) of his showcasing lighter skinned women under the context or race and racism in America. Also, I'm caramel, and I've dated chocolate, caramel, and redbone sisters of all shapes and sizes. Being caramel didn't cause me to be attracted solely to caramel sisters.

Thank you 1725topp.
