They've all been mentioned already, but I'd have to include "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man," "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad," and "777-9311."

I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man is amazing. And I love the slowed down 3EG version too (though I'd prefer Prince doing the solo instead of Donna).

Yea, the live version of Empty Room @ Montreux is god damn spine-tingling, goosebump-inducing, guitar-ballet righteousness, list-making peoples.

Habibi and The War. Although known to most fans I'm sure, they are worth mentioning.

Habibi was Hendrix like even down to the Machine Gun lyrical interpolation in the song.

The War was a slow build up, but when he opens up on that Solo, it's freaky, funky, and just out of this world.

What about "Get It Up" off of the 1st Time Album? To my understanding that's a Prince Solo.

i always used to avoid Adonis & Bathsheba...but, one day i accidentaly allowed it to play all the way through, and i was surprised to discover the beautiful guitar work that starts about at the 3 minute mark and continues til the song's last note...now i dig the song... but i also love "Jughead", "Arrogance", and "The Flow", so what do i know? cool ...

Whenever I see video footage like this I wonder how anyone can say Prince was overrated on guitar (and a lot of people do). Is it just because it’s hard to find video online of live performances and people are just going by his studio albums?

I think the general public perception of Prince musicianship is based on his studio work. I remember after his RRHOF performance, there were two camps:

A) "Wow, I didn't know he could play like that?! Where can I find more stuff like this?"

Or

B) "Big deal! Clapton played it better! Prince is a hack/has been/expletive"

Post 2004, more eyes are being opened to his guitar chops in the general public, but haters will still hate.

It’s funny I usually felt Prince did more incredible guitar work live than in studio recordings except for Let’s Go Crazy. No live version can touch the studio version for me.

I’ve always felt that Prince used the guitar with great restraint in the studio, balancing it as an element among others. I agree that the live stuff is where you really appreciate his skills as a player. My current favourites are the “Feline soundcheck”, “Fuck It Up Jam” from the Lovesexy Rehearsals and his rhythm guitar on one of the performances of "I Wish You Heaven" (unbelievably tight and funky). His performance of “All The Critics Love You In Montreux” is wonderful as well – the way that he sustains that note at the 5:20 mark is almost transcendent. Actually, that last video usually leaves me a little choked, despite being a really joyful performance.

After Prince died Slate published an article saying Prince was the greatest guitarist since Jimmy Hendrix. The comments were sad but predictable and it was obvious most making comments had rarely if ever seen Prince live. Where I lost it though was when someone was arguing why Johnny Ramone should be ranked higher than Prince in a list of greatest guitarists. Please.

What is pretty telling about Prince's skill set is when you have people like Clapton, Tom Morello (RATM/Audioslave) Santana and numerous ROCK guitarists tell you his talent was unbelievably good. His image almost prefaced any real discussion of his chops, but dude was extremely good and his body of live work when truly assessed illustrates this.

whats annoying to me is when I see people say “people think he was good only because he played fast”. Really? Of course I’m not here to suggest Prince was some guitar pioneer. But then were all so-called greats pioneers? Did they all do something or invent a style no one had heard before? To me Eddie Van Halen is more distinctive or inventive than Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck even though the latter two are probably more respected by the music elite.

Post 4/21, It's really not that hard to find videos of his live performances. Even while he was alive, there were a few videos or clips of his live performances out there, e.g. the Super Bowl performance, award shows, and the RRHOF performance.

.

Another point to consider is that the radio/single versions of some of his signature songs omit or significantly reduce the guitar solos. When I was in high school, and would hear WDC on the radio, the radio version contains almost none of the guitar solo. LGC contains a little bit of the solo, but not the whole thing. PR the radio single doesn't have the whole guitar solo. Finally, a lot of his best guitar solos come from songs that weren't single or were singles that had only minor chart success, e.g. I'm Yours, Anna Stesia, The Morning Papers.

This is true. But not enough is out there. Or it’s out there and then Web Sheriff or NPG get it taken down. 2nd night of 2011 North Sea Jazz Festival has some amazing guitar work but good luck finding it online.
