When We're Dancing Close and Slow Live version with Andy Allo at North Sea Jazz Festival in 2011. Loving the arrangement, the guitar work, Prince and Andy's voices, Prince being flirty on-stage and his stare; the way he looks at her, man. The whole song and performance it's been in my head all day and I luv it! "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

I know that this may mess up the feng shui by having two consecutive entries , but I have fallen in love with the song If U 2nite. I had heard Mayte's version a while back but have only recently heard Prince's superb version. Delicious. Can't get it out of my mind.

"The Dance Electric": the Wendy & Lisa back-up singing version with all that awesome guitar playing from Prince. That song is such a sprawl. For only my own listening and enjoyment, I've been experimenting reassembling it to make it more concise and punchier. Editing it with Audacity. I took the end "whoosh!" from the Prince-only version and began it with that (sudden electric jolt: the song is called "The Dance Electric" after all. Gotta represent!). Followed by 4-bars of Prince's looped arpeggiated guitar from the 4:00-ish mark before adding the end part of the Prince-only version: "Dance. Dance Electric!". Again, another "whoosh!" then stretched out and looped the main groove of the song to make it breathe more. Then it goes into the first verse. I also use the arpeggiated loop again after "love all your enemies" before it goes into the next verse. I feel no harm done seeing how I'm not file-sharing any of this. What he did is his and I respect that. I just want to see where it'll go, having fun remixing it, if you will. The great thing is that there is so much to work with to get imaginative about it. I draw a line about not using anything else but stuff from the song itself, the Wendy & Lisa version and Prince's solo-only version. The chorus sometimes repeats way too much. I love the song. I just wanna bring out the funk, groove and the song as much as I can. I do collect tons of his stuff but I never file share or any of that. I was even thinking of adding Prince's dialogue from the summer 1985 French interview where he talks about giving Andre' Cymone the song saying "You need it! You need it!" I always loved that. He was such a character. Such a hep cat! The last 3 or 4 minutes of the song with the tom-toms all over the place: trying to abbreviate that. Been working on it for about a week. It's a lot of fun, using the visual wave file editor to get it as well-constructed as I can. It's just something to do when I can't unwind to fall asleep. A lot of fun, a lot of fun. The original beginning: it's both clever and somehow unsettling to me. For me, it needs more of a buildup. Even so, it's great fun and a learning curve in understanding and getting better at song dynamics and arranging. For what I'm trying to do, I'm at once trying to emphasize the song, the funk guitar and the killer rocking guitar that populates the Wendy & Lisa version. I love what the song represents lyrically, too. I hope to whittle it down to about the 7:00 mark. I just want to see if I can actualize what I hear in my head and commit it to tape, if you will. Have a good one, everybody. Peace !
