That's just a bootleg rip of the video cleaned up a bit, i.e. something that's been out there for years and for free. What we want is the much better audio from this new DVD.

After reading how the audio is out of sync - are you kidding me? - I'm definitely only interested in getting hold of the audio. I also can't be the only person who doesn't have an optical drive anymore. It's hard to believe in today's world Warner is not offering a digital download. If it becomes available, I'll buy it. In the meantime, I'm off to WeTransfer.

I don't have a DVD player, but I did rip the disc and on my rip I see no sync issues. Lipsync is fine, although it is difficult to always see the drumbeats, that's also a good indication. It doesn't matter where in the show I am, sync is always good, start to finish. Although I have to admit this is the first time I've watched into Purple Rain, it's the one I always skip normally. For my money, the sync is fine and the visual quality is better than expected, although the light often throws an unsightly blue/purple haze over everything.

.

I guess what's happening is that some people are simply too far back in the stadium, but I thought there'd be complaints about the echo more than the sync! wink

.

FYI: ripped on Mac OS with Handbrake, Super HQ setting with extra high audio bitrate (highest I could select), played with Kodi on an Amazon FireTV 2.

the Synch seems fine to me... on a proper Blu-ray DVD player. But I can not help but think that the video quality is not much better than some of the other shows other there.

No sync problems here and I think they did a good job cleaning up this thing... Could have used some extra's though like the original broadcast alternate angles (especially during "When Doves Cry") so hopefully there's a pristine copy out there of the original broadcast that will some day get released on a proper "Syracuse" DVD set...

yeah! I am happy with it overall. I understand that in that kind of lighting it is not easy to get a great image. (which is what I understand happened to much of the original footage for the SOTT movie).

But I was hoping for a new video mix! I hope they kept all the original footage. So it should be possible to remix the shots and angles...

me and ufoclub spoke about this a few years ago, he could tell you anything about the problems with the lighting as he's an expert. I never could understand why so much of it was dark, so, it appears that it was the equipement and lighting, the crowd could see the stuff normally though, which was what counted at the moment.

Yeah no sync issues here. Not crazy about the cobweb tracers I'm seeing during HCYDCMA/Temptation though but the audio sounds fantastic. I'm glad a younger generation will finally get to see/hear this gig the way it should be experienced, Youtube doesn't do it justice. My 60 inch plasma's smiling from ear to ear..

As if it is so hard to extract audio from a DVD these days.

It's 2017!

Afterwards you can trash the disc or give it to somebody else.

.

If you'd rather provide storage yourself then you can do that.

Did you think about a backup too?

WOW WOW WOW headbang ! This concert is off the charts for me. I did not have any sync issues as some seem to have experiencd. I'm sorry to hear some people are experiencing this, as this would be very frustrating for me.

My only complaint is the WDC mirroring, but that seems to be an intentional experimental video play for the live performance to have the look of the WDC video. It's kind of cool in an abstract way but I can see how a lot of people would not like this.

Dude is on fire though, the man doesn't stop moving. I like the storyline themes throughout the concert, very theater like. I have nothing on video from this era, this DVD is a real treat for me.

My wife, who usually falls aslpeep 1/2 way through an hour long TV show during the time of night we watched this, sat up on the edge of her seat marveling at his abilties during the entire performance as did I.

I'm so glad I have this so I can watch it as many times as I'd like. I too would love this on cd/mp3 to listen to it in the car or wherever. Guess I'll have to make that happen on my own.

I have to say, I think the concert itself is not that great taken as a whole. There are some great moments, but there are some pacing issues and indulgent spots that take it out of his top concerts.

The whole talk to god section, whilst it kind of makes sense and could be argued forms the underpinning to the later Lovesexy conert concept - I'm trying to be good but they dig it when I'm bad - comes across as awkward to me and stops the flow of the concert in it's tracks.

The Baby I'm a Star section is epic, as is the Purple Rain, and I love the HCUDCMA section, and his vocals are amazing at points, so I'm not trying to be too down on it, but there are a lot of wtf moments.

I also wince a lot at the punishment he puts himself through, the leaps off of large speaker stacks and whenever he does multiple splits

The transfer is about the same as my vhs to dvd rip I made a few years back, but it is nice to have an official version.

those wtf moments were what prince was about then, he did all kinds of wierd shit. I think he got better as a musician and a singer as he got older but he's still so damned good here and it's mind boggling how he went from the hopping around on dirty mind to what we see here. It's almost like a non-dancer becoming a dancer. the things he did through hard work were astonishing, he just flourished in those years. I do have to wonder that if a guy like prince came along today, whether i'd have the patience for the antics that i did as a kid but that's what being young is, being open to things. And i still believe the musicians he had later were superior for the most part, i think fink/brown were great but I think Prince saw the musical limits of the rest, although they did have great chemistry and creativity. Later on we lost some of the creativity from the side men when we got guys who had stock riffs and skills on their instruments but nothing new to say.

I think it sounds great compared to what we had before. As far as the video, some songs the purple lights are too much. Like in Delirious, it looks like Prince's hair is short. That problem didn't exist on the VHS. The show itself is amazing. It is a shame we are getting the show that everyone has seen before. I know they have other professionally filmed shows from the tour. They showed part of the show from Miami at Celebration and you have to think that they at least have the shows from Houston and D.C. where the videos for I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star and Take Me With U were filmed.

Another missed opportunity is that the DVD should have contained:

- All 5 music videos, particularly the 3 live music videos.

- The AMA and Grammy TV performances of Purple Rain and Baby, I'm A Star (if it was possible to obtain the rights for those).

.

Besides, I think it would have been reasonable to offer the remastered audio for all the above and the Syracuse show as digital releases, either with a voucher to redeem for people who purchased the physical boxset, or to be purchased individually.

.

Which brings me to this question: is their any website where it is possible to purchase the show digitally?

By the way, how explaining that promo videos (Take Me With U, I Would Die 4 U & Baby, Im A Star) have a good quality and not the Syracuse concert? It was same period & still shot with VHS though..

I feel short changed (if not deceived) by iTunes and folks should note any dissatisfaction they have in the iTunes store reviews. It's idiocy to give disc purchasers the concert video and not download patrons.

Hope the estate figures this out and we get a correction.

That said, I hope a Piano&Microphone concert video is released soon to make up for this snafu. So easy to do for smart people.

I'm feeling flat with this. I had the VHS and watched it hundreds of times. Either I'm having issues with my blue ray player or the distance shots are actually worse than on the VHS. The sound is better, but It's pretty challenging to watch.

so you even though the videos ar available with the movie, especially on blu ray, you feel it was a missed opportunity to include them in lower quality on a dvd? ooooooook

Vulgarity was uncalled for, really.

However, my point was that for one thing not everyone owns a blu-ray player (not that those video-taped music vids would look better on blu-ray than DVD anyway, as evidenced by the quality of the Syracuse show on DVD), and for another thing some people may not have bothered to purchase the 2004 PR edition.

But the bottom line is that, regardless of whether you own those or not, it wouldn't have cost WB a great deal of money or effort to add those videos as bonus on the Syracuse DVD.

I know some people don't care for single edits for example, it depends whether you're a completist or not, but I think it's always better to offer a comprehensive collection if you're gonna do such a boxset. Complaints about there being too much on it can't really be taken seriously as a customer complaint. But complaints about something that should be there not being there is always more of an issue for the record company.

This issue does pose a little head scratch.

To make an incredible DVD, without doubt, it would be amazing to have all promo videos and special performances.

However, and sadly there is always a compromise... a dual layer DVD can only hold around 2 hours of video at full pixel resolution and full chroma and luminance levels and with a stereo soundtrack. Anything above this will require even more compression and do bear in mind DVD is already massively compressed.

For example, a 4k two hour feature film will be around 200 GIG - this even has massive compression on it... a dual layer DVD holds approximately 8 GIG! So DVD really is suffering badly already! Shockingly, many feature films are compressed to single layer DVDs which only hold 4.38 GIG! The Syracuse concert is just under 2 hours long - so the maths is really dictating the solution here. I haven't checked yet if the DVD is single or dual layer.

Naturally the obvious conclusion is to increase storage capacity which will reduce the amount of compression needed.

That in mind, the Syracuse concert would fit very nicely onto a blu ray with the video promos and other footage.

BUT... many people feel this isn't possible, but it is. The Syracuse concert was recorded for broadcast and as such the recorded specification will be much higher than most TVs receive and certainly much higher than what DVD storage would allow.

I haven't read the video credits in years but as this was recorded for live broasdcast, it would have been recorded onto Beta tape, which was the highest capacity format in 1984 (these are ferrous oxide tapes, followed by Beta SP, not ferrous oxide and finally Digi Beta in the 1990s).

So as an old Beta recording would have 300 lines of horizontal luminance resolution and 120 lines chrominance resolution, this would look very nice on blu ray on a large TV screen.

The above logic is also the same if the promo videos where to be re-captured and put onto blu ray.

Incidenatlly, when 1999 was reissued by WB at the end of 1998, the circulating promo video was a new capture from the original mister - hence why it looked so clean!

I hope this is of interest.

On the other hand I remember the post-VHS days when DVD were supposed to be so perfect. Maybe we're become too demanding? lol

I fact I've realized... why aren't the 5 promo videos... on Youtube?! Like, you know, to support the release? That's what promo videos are for in the first place: promo. Then you can purchase them on a DVD or Blue-Ray if you wish to, but basically they were never meant to be sold.

That's an awesome point!

The promo videos should be out there doing their job!!!

Yes back in the day DVD was the holy grail yet large format TVs have shown the awful limitations of DVD and the effects of over compression.

55inch to 90inch TVs are now very common and 4K TVs are very affordable.

8K is already available but not commercially widespread.

Ultimately 4k, 8k, etc are working towards optical which is the ultimate in resolution.

lol lol
