Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded - Discussion HERE

This 3-CD/1-DVD Expanded Edition is a true collector's item and the ultimate vision of Purple Rain. In addition to the 2015 Paisley Park Remaster and "From The Vault & Previously Unreleased," it includes "Single Edits & B-Sides" and a never-seen on DVD of Prince and The Revolution Live! in 1985.

What's the verdict on the DVD? I'm watching it now and it is a vast improvement over what I remember from my VHS double live set. But I haven't had the VHS player connected to the TV for ages, so I may be a bit blurry on that. (much like the VHS tape) wink

.

I have to say, it is totally watchable. I would have even liked a professional upscale on bluray, if only for uncompressed audio.

.

I don't think it is a new mix, but the audio does seem a bit clearer as well.

.

What's the hive mind's opinion?

Strive

It's sourced from the original production master tape and the audio was remastered.

Some people seem to be mad that it isn't a HD quality remaster but it was shot on videotape. There's a limit to how good the picture quality can be. I'm waiting for my untouched DVD before I pass judgement.

I couldn't get the CD's yet, but I found a DVD rip which seems to have a much better sound quality than my classic Syracuse LD rip bootleg. I can't judge on video quality with such a compressed file.

.

Is there any way to legally purchase the video show (or an audio rip of it) online (i.e. downloadable) or is physical purchase the only way to get the video? Same question with the booklet (is there a digital version of it?).

.

I'm very interested in reading the liner notes to see if there's some explaination regarding tracklist selection and sources, because I can tell at least 3 major apparent problems:

- Obviously, the OD/RG mashup seems to have been made on Audacity in 5 minutes, so it'd be nice to have confirmation that it was segued as such by Prince (and to know why it's such a lame job).

- From what I've read it also seems that WA is the 86 version, which is good in the sense that it's by far the best version, but ridiculous because it belongs to the DA/C/CB/SOTT sessions. Unless of course that version was, in fact, NOT from 1986, which isn't totally unthinkable (a later version could indeed exist but not be circulating).

- If Possessed in indeed the March 84 version and is credited as the 83 one, that's seriously wrong... unless (again) we had the wrong info in the first place.

I'd like to know what liner notes have to say about all this.

Probably been answered elsewhere , so apologies in advance, is When Doves Cry on the DVD subject to the mirror effect that the VHS had?

My understanding is that it wasn't there for the original TV broadcast but, of course, it was on the original VHS. In the end I'd say it seems only natural that the rerelease reflects the original release as faithfully as possible. On the other hand it'd be nice if it was available for digital purchase, or even on the DVD for that matter, in both versions. Being a completist I'd like everything to be available in improved quality. But hell, some singles edits, as well as the live versions from the music videos, are absent from this package, so it's far from being a comprehensive release anyway sad

.

On the other hand, regardless of the (many) problems PR Deluxe has, I'll still be very happy to have most of the material in improved quality, as well as a whole CD of outtakes. I just feel it could have been done better. But it's a first attempt, made in the middle of a legal turmoil surrounding the estate: no doubt things can be improved in the future.

.

I've noticed a certain number of (physical) products are now available on the official website's online store. This is good news, since it may suggest that at some point, they will sell some previously unreleased material as well. Being a lot into Bowie lately, I've just realized yesterday that the Bowie website's news are being constantly updated, on a near weekly basis, with announcements for lots of new products and even short articles to celebrate anniversaries of albums and stuff like that. Wouldn't it be nice to have a dynamic official Prince website like that! nod

Someone on the other thread said this, so yesterday I checked with headphones on and found that on the leaked MP3:

a) Right at the start of "Erotic City (Extended Version)" there is some kind of sound distortion;

b) In "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech)" right before the "father's song" sequence there is a dropout on the right channel;

c) As I discussed yesterday, at the beginning of "Love & Sex" there is a minor dropout right before the drums in;

d) I didn't listened to but there was also report of a dropout on "The Dance Electric".

My question is for someone who actually has received the CDs and listened to them: can you confirm these sound issues are not on the proper CDs and are actually due to the rip?!?!??

Minor defects (well, not in the case of EC being this an already released track) that don't detract from the many merits of the box set, but it would be unfortunate.

It is true... I thought there was something wrong with my computer when I heard the start of Erotic City... That was a shocking error.

Listening to this - I kinda feel sad.Let's be honest - the music on here is nothing compared to the oodles of bootlegs that are already out there - and the quality here is middling - that includes both the track selections and audio quality.Looks like they just plucked these tracks from the vault with no work done to them - To that end, they could easily release a disc a month and we would buy them no questions asked - yet we had to wait until mid June for this.I refuse to pay for this...... the only people being made rich off this are anyone other than Prince - He's dead, and his family are already richer than they deserve.In the meantime, the lawyers, fat cats and family will squabble over what will be released next.....maybe in time for christmas... and I see people on here seemiingly happy about this - as if there's something to celebrate -.... Let Doves cry 7" version - That says it all to me!

Few people here care much about the WDC 7". But if you think that Love and Sex, Possessed, We Can Fuck etc. are "nothing", you may as well hang it up.

That intro glitch on the long version of Erotic City is appalling...

Good to see WB exercising such superb quality control...

OK Disc 2 is worth the purchase. One thing is very clear- these are NOT finished tracks in that Prince would not have released them as they are. The fact they are demo-like is also kind of charming. The sound quality is good enough to convince me these are from the source tapes or very close to them. How did WB get ahold of these is the true mystery to me. If they had access to the vault there's dozens of other tracks they could have included, no? Does anyone have a list?

All in all these are pretty much whta you would expect studio outtakes from the 1999/PR era to sound like. I do have one question about "Possessed". It is a completely different arrangement to the boot copy I've known for 20+ years.

I bought the 2 disc set as I knew the DVD would be of disappointing quality and the single edit b sides disc is redundant so I got this for $12.99. If that ain't a bargain tell what is.

Can I say that the Expanded Deluxe is the definitive choice even only to have finally "God (Love Theme From Purple Rain)" on CD?!?!?!?

Have you receiver it yet? If so, what does it look like? I want to buy it for a friend, but the pics online look a bit "cheap", so I might go for the 4 discs instead. I'm just not sure he can handle so much Prince!

The most shocking thing for me isn't the quality (although I still question the source material), but the fact the bass, guitar & Horns are removed from "We Can F***" and replaced with synths. It's basically just a demo of the familiar song.

I heard that too.

I was told that the beginning of Love And Sex is from the Birthday shows performance of "Possessed" (6/7/84) it cuts right off into Prince saying "Come on baby hurt me...". I wonder if thats an editing error as that was not really part of the song but a sample of that live intro.

Wouldnt be the first time, same thing with Emancipation's "La La Means eye love U" sample of he Delfonics original.

Yeah THAT!

As people have complained about disc 3, I kept saying it was worth it for God Instrumental & Another Lonely Christmas 12" alone.

I guess you haven't heard the versions with actual Bass. I didn't say it wasn't good, just totally wasn't expecting a graffiti bridge demo sounding version. I prefer the bass, guitar and horns over synths anyday.

those versions are from 1986, far removed from anything having to do with Purple Rain. This version from December 1983 at least historically fits somewhat.

Listen to the WE CAN FUCK reverbs very closely... Then go play the bedroom scene with Prince and Appolonia...

Tried to make a thread about this to talk more in detail so it wouldn't get drowned in other PR DELUXE threads but it got locked for no reason.

Unless that website has something that no one else has in the future, I doubt I'll be buying from them, again.

Several of you guys have yours, and I don't have mine and I PAID MORE for it on their site. Total bullshit!
