I'm surprised no one has mentioned, "I Wanna Be Your Lover", yet. The intro with the high rhythm guitar and the groove screams "Dance! Now!" to me. smile

That isnt funky or groovy until the coda. The opening and main part of the song is strictly pop.

Hot Thing and Housequake, for the well known popular votes.

Le Grind and Shockadelica, least spoken of but so good!

Erotic City is a good choice but DMSR is more suitable for all ages.

By the way, Uptown Funk "borrows" the whole bridge before the last chorus from DMSR. It's not the exactly the same, but it's so DMSR.

I did a bit of Djing as a student, playing a mixture of classic funk and contemporary electronica (Apex Twin etc). I often used Prince's music as a bridge between the two genres. Erotic City always went down really well, as did Let's Work and Party Up. Hot Thing, Irresistible Bitch (later version), U Got The Look (Long Stroke) – these all sound great played LOUD on a decent sound system. I always made a point to play Rockhard In A Funky Place or Superfunkycalifragisexy just because I love them so much, but they're probably a bit niche for the general party crowd. In my experience, virtually everyone loves Kiss - it always prompted at least one group of shreaking woman to ditch their drinks and run towards the dancefloor (on one occasion literally dragging an inebriated friend across the floor with them)... biggrin

DJing? Yes, it was a lot of fun. As I said, it's great to be able to play your favourite tracks on a professional grade sound system. I wasn't a pro by any means – we just started throwing nights to raise money for art projects, exhibitions and so on, and we eventually came to an arrangement with a couple of local clubs. I was chosen simply because I had the most extensive vinyl collection and worked with audio gear. This was in the late 90s/early 2000s when a standard set-up still consisted of turntables, CD players and a mixer. There wasn't many local places playing genuine funk at that time (lots of disco/acid jazz/"funky" house nights), so our sets were quite novel. As a rule, Prince wasn't particularly well respected among my peers, so I always made a point of playing his back-catalogue as much as I could. I played IDM as well, and would often segue his Camille tracks into stuff like Funny Little Man by Aphex Twin and then Parliament's Dr. Funkenstein or Mr Wiggles - it worked pretty well (to my mind at least). Erotic City still sounded fresh next to that IDM stuff. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was having my old vinyl hanging around a bunch of drunk/high people (which usually included myself!). Things are different now, of course – why not give it a try?

Yep. And it was played in a redneck-y bar, which made it a bit surreal and slightly comical.
