It may well be that they can't locate the master in the vault.

They don't have access to Prince's vault. The only things actually coming from his vault are what he submitted to them for his version of the deluxe package. The rest is coming from the WB vault, or they're sourcing them elsewhere. I repeat, this is not from Prince's vault. We won't know the state of his personal vault tracks until the estate is settled, and the vault is properly curated. [Edited 5/12/17 6:51am]

This. I'd think that it's safe to assume that 'Electric Intercourse' is sourced from the Vault, possibly one of the few songs (or only song) that Prince offered. But most everything else is likely not sourced from the Vault.

This is what I think is a likely scenario. He surpringly performed it just after the PR 30th Anniversary announcement from WB, plus it sounds considerably better than Moonbeam Levels and Our Destiny/RG

I know we pretty much had them in recent-ish boots but as the official version it takes a bit of getting used to after the live version doesn't it? Where's the damn guitar guys??

Interesting nonetheless. I ain't complaining but I suppose I'm a little disappointed Roadhouse Garden and Electric Intercourse don't sound more finished. But then again, maybe they were and I just need to reprogram my brain after years of only having the live versions. Thinking back, the first time I listened to Purple Rain (the album) I thought bits sounded a bit weak as well, bits I now see as really strong!

Guess I'll post this in this mess of a thread. I think it's off topic, but I've been spanked and pointed here smile

Purple Rain Deluxe and other thoughts...

Some things to think about...

Everything announced for this PR release (as well as Moonbeam on 4Ever) is material that could have concievably been on WB's shelves since the 80's. Isn't the story that he did tons of songs in preparation for the film/album and whittled it down to what was released? Seems likely that WB may have posession of many tracks, whether or not Prince gave them to them specifically for this project. Given the sound quality (blown out highs, etc.) the source seems to have been something they couldn't do a heck of a lot with (or, they HAVE done a lot of work with what they had, and this is as good as it gets).

We haven't heard ANY sort of confirmation of what - if anything - was found in "the vault" or what the condition was. You'd think that if WB had any access to any of this material, that would be trumpeted in the information about the PR release. In all liklihood, WB has had NO access to materials other than what they had.

A new edition of Purple Rain was announced way back in 2014...yet didn't come out when people expected it to. At one point, Prince himself said, when asked about the delay, that he had given it to WB and they were refusing to put it out. Why? Did he give them something they didn't think would sell? Does "Paisley Park Remaster" (as apposed to, simply, "remaster") indicate something?

Why has WB's information about this release been so erratic? This SHOULD be a major release, but it seems like they are flying by the seat of their pants. NO detailed information about the release. NO mention (in the announcement) of the coordinated re-release of PR related 12" singles & picture disc - this should be a much larger effort as the first significant posthumous release. We're a little more than a month from release and there has been, seemingly, no effort made to cultivate excitement about it.

This part, I know, is hearsay - but a buyer for a music retailer that I know said last year that, according to their WB rep, WB's hands are very tied by the agreement they made with Prince back in 2014. According to what I was told, WB is not allowed to change packaging or content of any reissues... which has proven to be true of all of the single and LP reissues so far (apart from the addition of the NPG copyright credit). What does that mean for future releases? Why has the LP reissue series stopped?

Our destiny/ Roadside garden
First part is a 3 and the second part is a 10

I have always had a distaste for the Vanessa Carlton/Avril Lavigne side of certain unreleased 80's Prince songs and Our Destiny is no exception. If you like songs like In Dark room with no light or others here with us...then you'd prñrobanly dig it.

Roadhouse Garden sounds nothing like Vanessa Carlton and sounds amazing for it. I can skip to the second part so that's a plus. The train toots on Roadhouse Garden are adorable.

I had to overcompensate and give Roadside Garden a ten, just for being placed next to Our Destiny,

Don't know why they paired them up. Certainly, no reason to.

LBrent

I think WB released what they had access to, but I also wonder if P left instructions with what would become those in charge of the estate for any releases as well.

I think it would be hilarious if he tucked away PP version of a release for a PR Deluxe that he knew the fans would want since WB doesn't seem to be up to speed about fan's desires.

I dunno...Just thinking out loud.

P could be pretty petty with WB.

Some comments on the music and how it's being released

The release strategy
Ugh, this is a pretty disappointing rollout so far. Ian Boxill had a much better marketing strategy for Deliverance than WB has had for their first two releases from PR Deluxe. This song/songs just kind of plopped out there on iTunes in Asia, Spotify, and what not. Can I get a video with a teaser sample from the song and maybe a little hype about the album? Can I get some advertising? How about an interview with the recording engineer? Cmon people. Thankfully, the music magazines are picking this stuff up with excitement, but WB and/or the estate are giving them very little to work with.

Roadhouse Garden
I like this. The instrumentation is different from what I expected, and that's kind of cool. His vocals sound really good. I'm glad it's a full song lyrically, as I was a little worried it'd be just one verse repeated. I expect to revisit this a fair amount. 8/10

Our Destiny
What a mess. I had high hopes for this song. But this is disappointing. The vocals are not compelling, and then the mix makes them too difficult to hear to enjoy anyway. I wish they had separated the songs into two tracks. 3/10

Anticipated rest of the album and release
I hope they don't pre-release anymore tracks ahead of the album, UNLESS they do a properly promoted single. Songs released before an album comes out should be part of the promotion, fanfare, excitement and such. Again, cmon people!

There had better be an upgrade in sound quality on The Dance Electric. The track time is slightly shorter than on the leak from a couple of years ago so hopefully it's a different source.

I saw this on Twitter. Don't know who bArON3121 is but he/she seems to be knowledgeable on most things Prince. Does this mean then that Prince didn't sign off on tracks like We Can F*ck and Wonderful Ass? When the track list first leaked I thought no way he'd approve that.

It's very likely that these extras are sourced from Warner's own archives. Before Paisley Park was built - and likely after - the standard procedure is to run a set of tapes (back then it would have been cassettes) of near finished / unmixed tracks from all sessions to the a&r at the label.

Remember, this studio time was paid for by WB. Even if it was a home studio, Prince would have been reimbursed for that studio time. Therefore it would have been work created under the WB contract. Also, this was LONG before Prince had any bad feeling towards WB - they were helping become a STAR, and had signed-off supporting his vision for a movie.

Anyway, a lot of material (finished of unfinished) is sitting in WB own vault. Which leads me to believe some of the very good bootlegs actually leaked from WB. I worked at labels for 15+ years, not in A&R either, and I still have very rare mixes and unreleased tracks kicking around. Not major acts, granted, but within a label before streaming technology became the norm, we had to run off CDRs (in my day) to multiple people just to give them an idea of how an album was shaping up, etc.

Wb release is bootleg sourced cash grab ... if they had the master tapes, quality would be there. This is the best you will ever hear because wb will sue up the estate if they find high quality versions of the same songs in the vault. Wb does not have access to vault, just low gen bootlegs from the office. As I said before, no way p would sign off on we can fuck. Wb is doing whatever they legally can to make money with what they have, which clearly isn't much more than the elite boot hoarders have.

Considering p needed w+l to finish these tracks around CB + npgmc time, the masters do exist in p posession. The estate may or may not find them eventually but no doubt wb will sue if estate were to rerelease them. CB sounded great so no reason to believe RHG would be such poor quality.

Also good to remember how racist the music biz is and how much WB hated what prince did. No doubt they want prince lagacy destroyed and this will be a minor blip cash grab followed by years of legal battles and no music.

With all of this blowback about the quality of these two songs, now I'm getting a bit worried that "Wonderful Ass" won't be any better in quality than the version I have, and that's one of the songs I was most excited about on this release

agree w thunder... This is really fng sad. been on this board for a quite some time. also been cool with trading and outtakes as long as people buy the official products.

it's called respect, we are getting a decent deluxe edition of the pinnacle of Prince's popular career.

With a disc of unreleasedtracks, and yes some edits and singles, but still if you ever downloaded illegally step up to the plate and pay a reasonable amount back.

years and years we wished for release of outtakes, now quality is this, where did it come from, is ruining the moment.

I miss borisfishpaw, lang bleau and neversin discussions about the fng music.

The structure, the subtle differences between takes, the magic.

Roadhouse Garden has very distinctive "Purple Rain" es que sound to it. And as good as it is, i could see why it wasn't included.
And it feels too much of its time to fit on any of his later albums. I was just placing it off the top of my head on ARTWIAD, and no.. kinda but no. Then the further you move along the less it fits as his sounds was shaping up into a very complex mix. It would have stood out like a sore thumb.

I wonder if he ever played it live mixing it with "Baby I'm A Star"

Except that Only WB benefits from this release ... not the fam .. and wasn't this rhe ONLY release p agreed to before dying ... so WB is not likely going to give us any more ... maybe the estate will .. but clearly wb barely has enough audible material to work with if the are releasing bootleg quality out takes .. and at that LIKELY AGAINST PRINCE WISHES ... so supporting WB will only give us more bootlegs IF they even have the right to release anything else ...
