But not included as part of the "Purple Rain" Deluxe Set because WHY?

Because Warners don't own it.

It was a private performance for a charity, and the terms of Prince's deal didn't say "Any gig you film automatically belongs to Warners"...... In fact, back in 1983, record labels rarely interfered with live concerts artists did.

In fact - they didn't always deal with music videos either, and a great example of this is Michael Jackson. He financed the "Thriller" video himself and then was able to do a deal for "The Making of Thriller" on VHS - with exclusivity deals with MTV, Showtime, and a $500k marketing budget from the distributor, Vestron! And although Epic Records got a cut due to them owning the song itself, they had no ownership of the video nor the making of video, which sold almost 10 million copies on it's own!

So here's a nice bit of speculation that could be accurate : Carter only just came in as advisor, right? Maybe Warners thought that First Ave inclusion was a done deal when they made that first release of information that mentioned two DVDs. Imagine Carter comes in and says "Nope! This is a separate deal, you want it, you need to pay extra for it!"

Warners don't want to do that, deal collapses at the last minute, we get one DVD with PR Deluxe and then all of a sudden, here's information that Carter is shopping it around.

This is total speculation on my part, but having been in the music industry my whole life, I wouldn't be surprised if this is exactly how it went down.

UHD? It was recorded on two even older than 1983 (journalist-grade) BetaMax camcorders, probably by a locally booked company that does commencements and weddings, and those original tape elements may very well have been lost, leaving us with a second or lower generation VHS copy neglected for three decades.

.

[Edited 5/4/17 15:35pm]

I think you misunderstood; Netflix streams in UHD so no matter what the quality of rhe show is in/gets remastered into it'll look it's best on Netflix and other platforms that stream in UHD

Not true... the stream from netflix is UHD if the material/movie file is UHD. If something was shot on regular SD NTSC interlaced... it would most likely remain so.

Netflix normally now does not even accept anything not shot in HD or on film.

I'm selfishly hoping Apple Music as I'm a subscriber. Also if it goes to Apple it's possible it would be available for purchase on iTunes. Does Spotify have a store where you can purchase media or is it streaming only?

//I think one article said they were not looking at Sportify because Troy works for them. I am sure if it went Apple people would be able to purchase it but I bet if they cut the right deal they could make more money streaming it I mean DVDs are not going to around to much longer.

If this true we could be getting video out at least 2 or 3 times a year. We know Prince had tearsure trove of video that WB may no claim on.

It's really disappointing that they first offered it as part of the set. They owe us something else. He filmed every concert.
.
That additional material should include that rehearsal video that Linda Huntsberry shopped last year.

Ah...so this is why the video wasn't included on PR deluxe!

They wanted to package it separately and make more money off of it this way.

Hopefully, they'll put it on DVD for sale or at least on Amazon video!

Yeah...that's kind of what I was thinking too... really not cool if this was supposed to be in the PR deluxe (as part of the 2 concerts promised) but then they changed their minds to sell it separately to make more $$

No. No. they don't. But nobody actually makes DVDs either--or any other physical media. DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, books, newspapers. There are also no actual television programs, either, or movie theaters--just content streamed to phones, which is the most ancient technology anyone actually still uses, and that's just a few geriatric patients. Most people have the cloud streamed directly into their cortexes. Any suggestion otherwise is all just a big joke played by the entire world on a handful of not very intelligent 3-week-old puppies.

Seriously, what is the point of people constantly asking whether people still buy DVD's (or BluRay's) and CD's? Or, for that matter, asking whether people still buy media at all? Yes, they do. And some of us here on the org want to buy it, and some of us want to stream it, and some of us want to do both. And there's my comment on that. razz

For realz. There's a reason most movies are released as Bluray/DVD/Digital Copy combos, and the reason is all 3 formats are still popular. It's funny how some people assume the whole world makes the same choices they do.

If that's true of this video, what might be the reason for only one disc of unreleased material?

I was wondering this myself. First they advertise two concerts, and the shipping product only has one. Too bad, though. This concert would've been a nice addition to an already impressive product, IMO.

It's fucked how far down his line we've come. I discovered after buying my PS4 that it won't even play CDs. What a bollocks! That should just be a standard thing. Trying to force us to pay for things every month rather than own it. Stockpile CD players. At least they can't come to my house and take my records and CDs and cassettes. Wankers.

But the PS3 does play CDs. Infact, the PS3 can also download the CD into it's harddrive as mp3 files. I agree Sony kind of dropped the ball with the PS4 not being able to play CDs.

So with all the Byzantine complexity of the various deals etc something I don't understand is whether Warners would get any revenue from this release/deal?

I thought the 2014 deal with Warners have them exclusive rights to release material from the vault (as well as distribution rights to the Warners era albums).

So wouldn't this concert film fall under those terms?

Clearly the estate doesn't think so.

So assuming Warners have no rights (which it seems) do they receive any royalties due to it being a performance of tracks they have distribution rights to OR is it ONLY the performance that are included on the Purple Rain album etc that they have rights to thus meaning live performances (which are different the studio recorded PERFORMANCES) do not generate anything for Warners?

I think that last point is right but can anyone who is more clued up confirm?

I guess it would be the same as the SOTT film. Did Warners have any rights, involvement and revenue from that?

What I would like (as a fan obviously) is a physical format (DVD) series of live concerts that cover every era/tour from the start until the end of his career.

Ideally one main concert and one aftershow/special gig.

So a comprehensive record of Prince the live performer!

Well I can dream can't I biggrin
