I saw a post earlier today on a FB group (so take it for what it's worth). They said they had close ties to Warner Bros. And that WB had really been listening to the fanbase (perhaps the org as well) and did want to include the First Avenue video. But the sound & color correction was taking too long, so that's why it went from 2 DVDs to 1 DVD. It seemed they still want to release it, but it will be a separate disk.

If that is true, I'm willing to wait if they can clean it up, and have a better source tape to work from. It won't be perfect, but I've seen some really shitty copies out there, although I did have a pretty decent one back in the day.

Anyway - we'll see.

That's what's been said here over the last week from Sifi. The source of the info is likely the same so let's hope it's true. I'm skeptical however that the video quality and duration of the show would make a stand alone realease commercially viable from a label point of view. Seems like one for the hardcore only or a nice addition to a wider project.

It's really a good time for them to find the opening night of the PR tour, or another PR show to put on the same disk to make it more viable.

All those pics looks blurry AF when compared to Sifi's snippit footage. However, I can understand Militant's point that it's still unverified info. I say IF what Sifi said happens and we get an PR expanded - expanded edition that includes even more unreleased tracks like Wednesday, Gspot, and others, then that would vindicate his claim to the iron throne of westeros...oops, I mean to being an WB insider.

[Edited 5/3/17 17:41pm]

I think he means to say that Prince's version of the tape isn;t the only source that can be cleaned. I believe the Makings of Rain version is the purple one whcih I think was T's version so maybe that one was a direct copy of Prince's version which was cleaned, brightend and purple-ized. I heard the original tape is in the hands of someone who worked at First Avenue, maybe that version is the one being worked on to clean up. Maybe the guy from Minneapolis who provided the Purple Rain version from the mobile truck soundboard for that tribute radio show also has the master video and WB is working with this guy.

Yep. That's my hope. The fact that they can't tack it now means they need to put something else out with it. My fear, it will stay on the shelf.

I think there needs to be two streams for releases. One, the polished mainstream
marketable stuff and then the stuff that we'll buy every damn week. The Elvis estate do that.

or may not have had relevant information about a future release.

Bless the Org.

If you worked for warners and said what is the least they could get away with. There purple rain deluxe would be it.

. They probably felt by their standards 1 cd and 1 dvd of unreleased stuff would too much for us . Think about this how much commercial success would syracuse and alot of 7inch edits be as a stand alone releases. none . They probably feel they can scrape another release out of first avenue 83 as it is a legendary show . They may even do it as a cd and dvd releases . It just shows how low the excitement levels can get when all the talk is about first avenue 83. Anyone on here could make a more exciting release out of pr deluxe than this. They have had ages to get this ready. For me they are completely milking the releases with far too much rehash anyone who can not see it is a muppet

Absolutely 100% agree with this. However...

I'd have to charge more for that release than they are charing for this one. That is why I'm not too bothered at the moment. What's being offered is being put out at a reasonable price. On Amazon UK, a new CD is £9.99. So for my money, I'm getting the new CD of vault material and paying an extra £2 for the remastered PR and I've really got no problem with this as I'd pay the total price just for the vault disc.

RIP sad

Hopefully that sifi guy will not comeback. Tired of excuses for disappointing releases. He should get an apology from Warner's for missing an open goal with this release. Warners need to put more effort in in future .

I think the PR boxset could have been bigger and more exciting. Imagine if it included all the outtakes and songs he worked on before from 77-83 and then also some post-PR stuff such as Parade up until 1994?

That wouldn't really be a PR boxset anymore would it? Just a Warner years collection.

These comparison pictures were made 11 years ago...
I just did a comparison of the "Let's Go Crazy" "cleaned" sample that was posted here and the VHS version used for the "Makings Of Rain" DVDR (the blue Prince version, not the purple enhanced version) and the difference is extremely minimal to non-existent...
The sample isn't sharper nor are the colours any different, if Warners was doing this release they would do a better job in cleaning this or actually DO a clean up job, the sample only has the soundboard track synced (badly) to the video... Watch the sample in fullscreen and then do a comparison at the same resolution with "The Makings Of Rain" DVDR and the only difference you'll notice is the brightness and contrast which is minimal...
The smaller video frame of this "cleaned" sample is deceiving your eyes...

IMO WBR isn't doing shit with this show and the sample is just some fanmade hoax to get fans riled up for nothing...

I felt that snippet going around was better than the examples you showed of the differences. Not that the og was worse or better than whats out there etc. But the example that was shown and deleted shows that SOMEONE out there has it. Its a shame if it isnt really being worked on by WB etc or the powers that be to have it released.

Im tripping that everyone here is saying that snippet was ho hum quality lol. I have a cover pic of a screen cap from that show in ex quality. Of course its from the actual photographer who was there at that performance. Seems like the snippet was of the same ex quality

All fans out there have it who have "The Makings Of Rain" DVDR save for the audio...
People who criticise the quality of the sample have compared it to what they have ("The Makings Of Rain") and that isn't too much quality wise...
Rumour has it that the owner of First Avenue has the original tape (and that of the 1986 Parade gig)...
My guess is it won't be long before the soundboard audio of the 1983 show will be widely spread since it's already being shopped around and traded like fuck... Panic is spreading amongst some traders who can't keep their cool thanks to that sample...

It was a free release by FDA/Fullasoul/Superball... Don't pay for it...
And if Warners was seriously doing this show I would expect them to find the original editor(s) of the show, the tapes from all camera's used and then do a re-edit...

I wonder if the June 7, 1984 B-Day show
will get released, One Day.
I've worn that soundboard out so much since
last year.
It deserves to be out there on video.
What a classic show set a few weeks before
the Purple Rain album came out.
His 26 B-Day had to be the happiest time
In his life.
Is there a video of this show?
I've seen a ton of pics from this First
avenue concert.

Looks like the 2 CD package for me. The third disc is obnoxious with the edits and repeats. Should have been all extended versions only but they ARE collectors/completists out there that want this stuff and WB probably knows that.

The DVD? Well if the quality is really good maybe I'll cave but the VHS has always looked like shite. Like all y'all I was really hoping for either video or audio of the 1st Avenue gig sad

I really don't want to belabor the discussion about the clip from Sifi, and what is circulating (Makings of the Rain DVD), but I do want to point out a very important differnce in the 2.

As the Sifi clip begins it fades into a shot of Prince sliding up his guitar, and then transitions to a shot of him from behind/side of him.

If you compare this same section to what is on The Makings Of The Rain DVD, you will notice that the shot of prince sliding up his guitar has a tracking issue. The video goes static and then gray, then comes back and transitions to the shot from behind/side. This proves that the source of this is most likely a multi-generation VHS dub.

Thsi isn't a huge deal, but I do think it proves that whatever Sifi put out there is from a different and cleaner source.

I still stand by my thoughts on the improvements overall on Sifi's clip too. There is minimal ghosting, color is better. The blacks are black, the details are more crisp and not muddy like what is circulating.

Willing to share a back to back comparison for those interested.

Does anyone else wonder why they're including a DVD…a nearly dead format? 720 x 480 pixel resolution on a DVD is half the resolution of your average YouTube blog.

I understand that there are limits with the source material…but what young fan out there has a DVD player?

There are multiple low generation copies of this show with grey dropouts in different parts of the show; I have 3 versions on VHS: 1 copy is horrible almost black and white but doesn't have the warbled dropout at the beginning of "When U Were Mine", another one doesn't have the dropout you speak of that is on "The Makings Of Rain", it does however have a millisecond brief grey flash 5 seconds before the first verse of "Purple Rain" which isn't on "The Makings Of Rain" and then there's the copy which is exactly like "The Makings Of Rain"... So maybe it's a cleaner source or it's the same as one of the sources I have which have all been circulating since the 1990's... For a version without dropouts either the original tapes should be used and re-edited because I was told the original also has dropouts or someone should "Frankenstein" a version of all available sources...

Just for proper lossless audio alone at least bluray should be used...
Most young fans will probably have an xbox or playstation or bluray player to play dvd's on...
