I always found that kind of disturbing, really.

I remember him speaking about it with Travis Smiley. He talked about those types of items he found in her room and wondered if it was her way of talking to him about the birds and the bees, but I also wondered if she may have thought he was gay?

I dunno.

I think she simply had her private bedside drawer, most likely with her vibe and erotic literature, not expecting her nosey son to be creeping through her things when she wasn't around.

I don't think they were left there with the intention of him finding them.

I think he simply found them cuz he was nosey and after they were discovered, he now had information that he wasn't necessarily ready for and that made him curious about actual application of that new information.

Intuitively, I don't think his Mom would read him as gay. He doesn't read as gay. But I do think it's likely that if anyone wondered if he was gay, it might be his father, but even then I dunno.

Yeah, that's what I thought when he said that. Lol. I agree his father may have thought that as most fathers do when they have overly emotional sons, but who knows.

He discusses both in the Rock and Smiley interviews. With Rock, he says his Mother did it after she remarried. Perhaps it had something to do with him living with them at that age and she felt it was her duty to expose him to it but may not have known how to as his Mom. I get the impression that his Father wasn't going to do it at all.

Yeah, I guess there's several ways to look at it, but maybe the mags weren't hers at all since most women don't but Playboy sooooo, Haywards maybe?🤔

Chapter 6 ~ Demands Pgs 94-102

Main people in this chapter are: Chris Moon, Owen Husney, Sharon Nelson, Andre Cymone, David & Bobby Rivkin, Russ Thyret, Mo Austin, Lenny Waronker.

.

Prince asked Chris Moon to be his manager & Moon wasn’t interested in it.

.

Prince flew to New Jersey and stayed with his sister Sharon, so he could start reaching out to music executives on the East Coast. Prince was frustrated because he couldn’t get any labels to pay him the mind of day. He contacted Moon and Moon agreed to help Prince out, but he didn’t have any contacts either.

.

Moon finally approached Owen Husney who owned an advertising agency that also provided marketing for musicians. Moon played Husney Prince’s demo tape of Soft & Wet, when asked who the band was Moon told him that it was an 18 year old who played every instrument. Husney immediately called Prince & offered to be his manager, Prince flew back to MN. Husney raised $50K, rented Prince an apartment and gave him an allowance of $50 per week.

.

A demo tape was made, demands were planned out, in case they got a record deal. Prince wanted a 3 record deal, play all the instruments and produce the albums himself.

.

Moon booked 5 meetings with record labels. CBS expressed interest but doubted that Prince created the demo without other musicians so they asked him to re-do a song in front of them. He impressed them and labels started to court him.

.

Warner Brothers awarded him a contract but they only would let Prince co-produce the 1st album. Prince accepted, but told WB not to make him black.

I think this is where P's business acumen and long term planning already shine. Somewhere else I remember reading that he'd taken a course in High School on music licensing or something similar -it had to do with the "business" of music. Because of the music industry's separation of genres at the time, the R&B departments of record companies had very limited budgets for promotions and advertising. P knew that if he was put under that department, his exposure would be limited and his desire to appeal to a wider audience would be curtailed.

I wonder why he would make the remarks about Moon that he did in later life. It seemed that Moon was quite helpful at the start.

It looks like Moon helped him with a lot, Husney too. That Larry King interview where Larry asked P who is first manager was, P said that he couldn't recall...that was P throwing shade at Husney. But both of these guys really helped Prince, so I don't understand it either. ?

Yep. This is when I began to see patterns in his treatment of the people who were very instrumental in his life.

I have to wonder why. P never explained himself or named names but when you look at his behaviour with some people, the stuff coming out now, you can see why he would distance himself from them. On the other end of the spectrum, you have people who say he always treated them beautifully (including his road crews). He also said himself that he would constantly "test" people. Maybe some of them came up lacking?

That was so cringeworthy.

Honestly, they simply looked thirsty as Hell...and even worse these many years later cuz while I'm sure there were fans (including me) who being starved for any P info watched this at the time, I seriously doubt most of them (including me) remembers having watched them. The only thing that sticks are P's appearances, I wouldn't know the rest if I tripped over them on my way into my kitchen.

Sad that they allowed a moment on a stoopit tabloid show cause a family rift simply for 1 minute of fame.

I never remember the older sisters. Is this the one who showed Al Roker around PP when it was opening? Or is this the one who sued P over a song and has since passed away?

confused

That was Sharon, the one he stayed with in NY.

Sharon L. Nelson
-- Born in 1940, Sharon is Prince's half-sister. She’s the oldest of John L. Nelson’s five children from his first marriage to Vivian Nelson.
-- Sharon is a musician who released a 2009 album, 57th Street Sound, according to her Myspace page. She also co-produced her father’s 1994 EP, Father’s Song.
-- From 2009 to 2011, Nelson hosted a podcast that included an episode called "Three Generations of Music by the Nelsons," which discussed the music of Prince and his father.

Those podcasts must be a goldmine. Are they available anywhere?

Maybe it depended on who that person was he tested and how he came at them. If he came at them in in a distrustful manner in the first place, they had already failed by his standards. I think some people disliked being under the microscope, but because he's the boss, whatayado?

I was thinking about the Larry King interview as well, Penny. I think I posted something earlier but will say again. He didn't necessarily always give the respect he demanded from others.

It could be a number of things. The contracts he made with his managerial teams (and the lawsuit with Cavallo et al) have never been made public. He just strikes me as a very precise person - always chose his words carefully and conscientiously. The thing about anyone, really, is that they can only come at you with what they hold inside. So if he was exacting of himself to a high degree, he'd think that others operated the same way, much the way that thieves think everyone else works the same way. It's not necessarily right or wrong, it's just a point of reference and perspective.

Pepe Willie said that Owen told him he was not going to throw his agency away for some singer that might not make it. Pepe told Prince what Owen said and Owen was let go the next day. See the link below with the interview with Pepe. The part about Owen is right past the pic of Prince playing the piano with his eyes closed.

Ch 6. Prince hit the jackpot with Owen Husney and his Warner connection. (50K back then for a demo!). It was funny to read the made-up lines Chris Moon and later Husney gave to the record companies. Like many of you, I wondered why the shade later on toward Husney. (Laura, I had never heard that Pepe Willie story- I'll have to check out the link you posted, thanks). Anyway, as I read this chapter I couldn't stop thinking about how Prince dismissed Husney in that Larry King interview. There's a whole thread about it here on the org. Watching that interview, that diss was loud and clear to me, even with my minimal knowledge of Husney's role (how could his name possibly 'escape' Prince's memory?, to use the word Prince used). I don't know all the details but Husney seems to have really cared about and loved Prince, and was visibly affected by his death; I've seen him break down in a few interviews.

I've also seen some interviews where he has nothing but wonderful things to say about working with him. Husney obviously let whatever came between them go. That is one thing about Prince that struck me funny...for all the "love one another" he touted, etc., he really could be bitter and a keeper of grudges. "Testing" people, expecting everyone to jump through hoops for him but not necessarily doing the same in return. Having other people do his dirty work, kind of passive aggressive. I realize much of this stems from how he was raised, forming walls to keep himself "safe", but sometimes he comes off as sort of a douche bag. Other times I feel incredibly sorry for him.

Owen raised $50k in capital based on P's demo from investors he knew. Part of that money was used to get P an apartment (his first real home in a long while) and $50 a week went to him for living expenses. Just prior to that or around the same time, Bobby Z, who worked for Owen, was called upon to help get him settled. I think Owen really cared about Prince; maybe in hindsight, even more than he would admit to himself at that time.

--Read the interview with Pepe. You cannot have someone on your team that does believe in you. If what Pepe said was true I doubt Prince hated Owen but he had to make a business decision and trust me that 50k was not free I am sure Owen got it back once the contract was signed. Owen also tried to auction off some of Prince's cassette tapes and guitar just a few months before he died.

I'll check it out. Thanks.

Newspaper photo that appeared after Prince signed his first record contract with Warner Bros.

If that were me at 17, having just signed a recording deal with a major record label, I would've had the biggest toothy grin on my face in this picture, from ear to ear, lol. But we all know that is a rare occurrence for Prince, at least in photos.

I actually think his spirit was broken. I think that he had trouble connecting with people on a deeply intimate level; with being vulnerable because of his abuse as a child. Couple that with mommy issues and you have a man who could never make a marriage work.

It's good to know that his spirit was not broken. I read a lot of comments saying Prince was 'broken.' I can only wonder if a licensed therapist would evaluate him as such. I say this only because I've been told that going through psychologically damaging stuff does not necessarily qualify someone as being 'broken'. I have often wondered how a therapist identifies someone as broken vs. psychologically damaged. Is there a textbook definition? (I'm not directing this question to you, Laura, I'm just thinking out loud)

I think it's kinda important to distinguish between his spirit and part of his heart. P's spirit was as strong and true as they come, and it was like that his whole life, right up to (almost) the end...he was a staggeringly determined, single-minded, and brave person, and he had the most exceptional capacities for experiencing and channeling joy...I really don't think his spirit was broken, not in the slightest. That said, the abandonment did have an enormous effect on him, but it was an emotional wound that he carried in his personality, but not in his soul, if that makes sense...

Not like I love my guitar....

Makes perfect sense and I think you nailed it. Despite his losses, he always seemed to glow from the inside.

Edit: as per an article with Husney, the original deal was "a little over a million"
