The single edits are unnecessary (especially after "4Ever") but I'm cool with this. And if they want to release a 35th anniversary version with all the extended album tracks (and all of them except "When Doves Cry" have one) then I'll buy it again. Just keep taking my money WB.

As others have pointed out, the 7" single edits are worthless. They are arbitrary edits, just for radio play. And the full songs are on Disc 1, so what a waste of precious space. The extended versions are fine to have on there, of course, even though some were released in CD quality in the past.

.

Does anyone even buy CDs any longer? It seems pointless to arrange the material in 70 minute chunks.

.

But there is a lot of goodness on Disc 3 and not their fault that hardcore fans have heard most if it already.

.

Would a Computer Blue fan please tell me if this "hallway" version, whatever does that mean?, is the one to hear or do I have to keep looking?

.

it is not my favorite one. There is a version that is even longer with slow, building intro of squealing guitar and no Hallway speech (which is slightly corny). This version they chose will be great for you if you've never heard the one I'm talking about. I'm disappointed that they didn't include that one, but it was a bit more raw.

Single edits are not arbitrary, they're quite specific. For many people they would be the first way they heard a lot of the tracks back in 1984/5 and they're an insight into how music was written, recorded and sold when this album came out.

You may have no interest, fair enough, but you'd be foolish to assume that on this release the single edits are taking the place of something else. Just because we know more songs and versions of songs exist doesn't mean Warner have any intention of releasing them (this time round).

I agree with you Jaawwnn! nod

Back then the single edits were (also) used in the musicvideos, like "Let's Go Crazy", the short version.

Those "Single edits" were the versions people was hearing, first, both in radio and on Tv (most of the time).

WB still has news to announce (hopefully as soon as this weekend). We need to see the package deluxe cover box art. Will it include pictures? When it will be available for pre order? The price? and the two concert blu rays or dvds? Still lots of info that needs to be shared. WB can take my money on this project.

ok olivia fine... biggrin

but...... you are getting the extended version and the album version as well. cool

I like (some) of the single edits like "Alphabet Street" & "Batdance" (on the 4Ever compilation)

Because I was playing these on 7 inch vinyls, back then in 88/ 89, nice for me to have these "short edits" on Cd...

To me it's cool to own all versions from the PR-album, single & album & extended.

Bring me this purple rain-package. And incling those 2 Dvd's......

I can't wait til june 2017, been looking forward to this release soooo very very long..

At least I can't hide, I am a bit excited.... woot!

(maybe this set is aimed at the broader masses who are not that familiar with the vinyls stuff, from back then, ok I can see this - I am still a bit excited, though)

...And the combined running time of "Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden" from the Birthday show is at least 8 minutes, not 6:25. Even if they clipped the intros/fadeouts and audience noise, they still wouldn't land at 6:25. Maybe this is a studio version?

Info about disc 3 from a blog link someone posted earlier :

http://blog.thecurrent.or...cordings/

Disc 3: From the Vault

The Dance Electric – 11:29

This song is best-known from André Cymone’s 1985 recording; Prince also occasionally performed it live.

Love & Sex – 5:00

A previously unreleased song from the Purple Rain sessions.

Computer Blue (Hallway Speech Version) – 12:18

A previously unreleased version of this track, including a section known as the “hallway speech” because it refers to a metaphorical passage through hallways marked “lust” and “fear.”

Velvet Kitty Cat – 2:42

A previously unreleased recording.

Katrina’s Paper Dolls – 3:30

A demo version of this song has circulated, but this finished master has never before been heard.

We Can Fuck – 10:17

This song was released on Graffiti Bridge as a George Clinton collaboration called “We Can Funk.” This earlier version has never before circulated at its full ten-minute length.

Electric Intercourse (Studio Version) – 4:57

Live versions of this song have circulated, but this studio recording has never before been heard — and was not even previously known to exist.

Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden – 6:25

These two songs, connected by a segue, have been performed live.

Possessed – 7:56

This song was widely performed live, and a 1984 recording has been circulated; this is an earlier, never-before-heard 1983 Prince solo version.

Wonderful Ass – 6:24

A previously unreleased collaboration with Wendy and Lisa.

Father’s Song – 5:30

One of the holy grails of Prince’s Vault, this piano piece co-written by Prince and his father is heard briefly in the film. It’s previously been heard only in an abbreviated version taken from the film — never before at its full length.

Disc 2 is totally expected so shouldn't be a shock to anyone - I can imagine there will be a stripped down 2 disc edition of just discs 1 and 2.

.

Disc 3 looks great.

.

I'll have to read through these pages to find if there is an analysis of these tracks, such as recording dates and any other background. I'm sure there are already multiple versions of these tracks.

.

I do think that sometimes it is an impossible task to please people so I can imagine the label had a really hard time putting this together but I think they have done really well to bring us a full disc of new tracks.

.

lol lol lol

Disc 3 isn't bad at all, though I wonder how cohesive it will play. Will it feel like an album or just a bunch of collected outtakes?

Disc 2 is a disappointment. Who really wants the single edits? There's still plenty of outtakes they could have included instead.

Although, I would have been happy having unreleased alternate versions, such as the extended/unedited versions of Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, The Beautiful Ones, I Would Die 4 U (live at the benefit show), with the Let's Go Crazy Dance Mix, and the b-sides.

Wow......they need their asses whipped for this.

This is a MAJOR letdown.

Who the hell needs a disk of 7" edits?

Where is the list of songs from the other artists that appeared on the movie?

There is only 1 song on the Prince Disk 3 that we don't already have.

What a letdown.

.

Gotta love how people pretend that WBR are to blame, and not the dude who blocked these kind of releases for decades.

.

That said: this would have been a decent release as a first attempt back in say... 1999 (15th anniversary). Barely good enough in 2004. In 2017? Pathetic. We should be getting alternate versions for most album tracks, at least several concerts, relevant outtakes (no "Wednesday"?),...

.

Oh well, let's hope the estate gets their shit together soon and that WBR et al collaborate with Princologists to deliver a stunning package in... 2019?

Well, I still believe that Prince had a hand in this release, and WB may have compromised on a number of things with him.

How Prince approved including "We Can Fuck" is beyond me, though.

and Erotic City. Prince didn't want it on Ultimate Prince so it was removed on the final configuration

.

So? Prince didn't have anything to negociate with back in 2014. Warners might have been playing nice with those previous compilations etc., but this time they had no reason to.

The dude was still making new music. He was the creator, not me, not you. You are only a consumer.

Me, you, prince.orgers have not any kind of right over music he created.

Prince is dead, we are only still searching crumbs to eat under the table of his creativity.

"Stunning package"? Who really cares. It's time to quit adolescence.
