My favorite Prince lead vocals are "Raspberry Beret".

im always shocked and amazed when i read here that "Arrogance" and "The Flow", are weak songs...and i read that alot on this site...i love both them joints...alot...i never ever liked Tony M, but on "The Flow", he somehow summoned up the best bars of his career...and Prince and the NPG, channeled vintage Earth, Wind & Fire jazz/funk on "Arrogance", crackling rhythm guitar and urgent horns that Maurice White and Al McKay would be proud of...and Prince in his in his unforgiving prime, talking hella shit on both records...whats not to like?

I like Tony M. Debonair mf. And I don't know why I'm the only one. Rock!

I agree with RJ. Arrogance is bold but it's a great song.

What is so great about the Damn U vocals??

I would say any song where it seems impossibe to cover by anyone on earth - The Beautiful Ones is probably the best example.

Couple others like this would be Friend, Love, Sister, Mother, Wife and TMBGITW

Well of me it must be the way he sings the lines "Just like animals born2 breed, I got 2 have u baby, u r my only need, I'm on fire until u come and put me out" and his level of melisma and note stretching, along with smooth almost Sinatraesque like croon of it. And the fact this song stands out amongst a rough diamond that is the Symbol album. Plus it's the sincerity and conviction you hear in his voice, he really means every word in this song, just like Michael Jacksons more conscious songs on his later albums.

.

Not only does it have great vocals, it contains some of his best and most sincere singing.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Technically speaking TMBGITW (Mustang Mix) is truly impressive with all the bckgrnd vox. Back in the late 90's I was attending this polyphonic singing class and we were invited once to each bring a tape of a song that we found remarkable in terms of vocal polyphony. I brought Mustang Mix and both the teacher (who was a jazz singer and a real good one at that) and the other students were baffled, the teacher even had a hard time believing Prince was doing ALL the vocals by himself, she could swear hearing at least another, female, voice in the mix. Listen to it, it's truly impressive.

Try going from the lowest of bass to the highest of trebles without hitting a snag. Prince's vocal range is showcased in this song like no other. Plus it sounds like no other Prince song. It is da sh*t! biggrin

EDIT: For You, the title for his first album......angelic and so full... a simple harbinger to what was to come from that wonderful man.
