Mine arrived today. Great to have so many single edits on CD for the first time. Plus Moonbeam Levels on an official release, of course. It's a sad listen, though, in the circumstances.

Edited afterthought: Like most folk I suppose, I've had very "good quality" Moonbeam Levels for ages now. But to hear it in this pristine quality, it's almost like hearing it for the first time. It's getting me pretty excited about the potential for future vault releases.

Apparently poor. No one can find it easily in the stores per the report of orgers, not in the top 100 itunes downloads as of yesterday, and doing best at Amazon CD and Records charts (#8 yesterday). Don't think this chart includes downloads so this will be a minor factor in the Billboard charts.

I had to go to about 3 different stores to get this album, and it wasn't even put on the floor yet. Maybe this was due to black friday.

i think i want ya

The single edits and Moonbeam Levels are important, I guess, but the overall sound quality is pretty disappointing. While I'm hearing some volume leveling, I hear no evidence of remastering. I played it in my car today, and even with the bass level up, it sounds so thin. I'm hoping this rush job is not indicative of future releases.

I don't thinks it's broken, thats the single edit version. They rush through the intro and mash it together.

Way to go again Netherlands. The only country that had more Prince top 10s than the US. It also shows their allegiance by having ML in the chart.

I'm a little confused by the reports above: is any version unreleased, as in a slightly different fade out or lyrics censorship, or were they all out already?

I don't think any tracks other than Moonbeam are previously unreleased versions, just some of them have never had a CD release.

From listening to it, I'm very tempted to say Moonbeam Levels is from a bootleg, not something straight from the vault.

I know, it sounds crazy.

Opinion from the audiophiles?

Er... no.

As an orger explained better than me on another thread there is a difference between mainstream releases aimed at a mainstream market and niche releases aimed at a niche market.

4ever is for the mainstream.

We are a niche market.

From now on, any Prince releases but greatest hits compilations and maybe a couple of popular albums remasters (PR, D&P, SOTT) will be targeted at a niche audience, that is us.

If you expect Prince outtakes compilations or live shows to compete with Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams well, it's a bit like expecting a Woody Allen movie to compete with a Michael Bay movie.

However they still produce them Woody Allen movies, don't they?

I bought the CD and I think they did a great job enhancing the sound of specific instruments, otherwise not heard on the originals. for example, the guitar is slightly louder, a tambourine more clear to hear without dominating the vocals.

The only real difference I heard was on "Let's go Crazy". That song's first sentences after "Dearly Beloved" are not the entire wording. In other words, you won't hear when he says in this life, things are much harder than the afterworld, in this life, your on your own'. Those words are omitted from the song. Now, not sure if this is a Prince owned, or WB owned song.

Remember, Princes owns the Masters now on almost all of his songs.

WB does have a section on the booklet thanking the estate of Prince Rodgers Nelson.

But I would recommend buying the CD. It's well done and the songs sound really good. Add it to your collection.

It's also great! The extended version with that intro instead of the usual one would be fantastic.

On another thread most of us are agreeing that Moonbeam is from the same source used for Blast From The Past Vol. 2 a couple years ago. Maybe a better generation or cleaned up better but otherwise essentially the same. Definitely not some major upgrade sourced from master tapes anyway.

It's the cost of a couple Starbucks Frapuccinos...why would anyone debate buying Prince art?

I've done some A/B listening tests and it's the same as the BFTP 2 version.

I'm not sure. But some of the reviews from listeners are saying that it is remastered.
