Think of it as an investment for many future vault tracks.

An "investment"? You don't get any future vault tracks for free if you buy this release.
And of course they will release more vault stuff in the future, even if this release flops.

Exactly. The market for a best of and a vault release is completely different. The success or failure of Prince 4Ever will have no bearing on whatever comes next. Purple Rain "Deluxe" and what follows are the ones we really have to get behind and hope give the powers-that-be the incentive to provide a continuous stream of content.

It is naive to think the success of 4Ever has "no bearing" on future releases. I agree that Purple Rain reissue will go forward, but the industry will be watching this 4Ever release. A flop would generate negative publicity. Negative publicity will affect risk level for future releases from anyone with access to a potential project. It is all related. To think that vault releases exist in a vaccuum is short-sighted. This compilation being a hit would be a boon for future Prince projects.

Oh please, stop with that talk. The market is saturated with too many "greatest hits" compilation already. This is a repackaged one with ONE added vault release.

I understand the point you're making but, naive or not, I still believe if this proves to be a huge success, it isn't going to open the floodgates on future releases targeting fans, nor is it going to close them if it ends up being a total flop. Whatever the outcome, Prince is bigger than sales. Far bigger.

I'm kinda shocked that any fan would consider NOT buying this

1) It contains a vault track that is considered one of the best

2) The success or otherwise of this release may have implications as to how readily other vault material is released

@2: Wouldnt it be smarter if the estate or whomerver is releasing the stuff would be looking at the sales of the forthcoming PR reissue?

That depends.

Do you look at the remaster release as simply a remaster release?

Or do you look at the remaster release with an eye at the goodies? (outtakes, alternates, long versions, b-sides, etc, etc)

There's many more songs in the vault than on the released albums.

So we have to weigh the popular albums verus the unknown popularity of largely unknown vault tracks.

The idea that buying this album is vital to protecting the chance of future releases is nonsense and the kind of thing that a label's social media shills might be paid to 'influence' with (although I'm not seriously suggesting this is happening here)

Prince's shown definitively that chart positions are not only irrelevant to an artist's success, when an album quietly released at 90% of retail can outearn a major label number one at 2% minus deductions, and so the (fallacious) basis of this idea being that NPG and the estate are 'hard up' wouldn't even be serviced by buying Warner product!!

This is nothing other than a lame major repackage with a miserly one unreleased track and I treat it with the contempt it deserves, regardless of WHO is on the cover.

Now if we were talking about a vault release by NPG/Warner expected to sell x, I'd definitely be prepared to put it onto my christmas gifts list to the tune of several copies so that that expectation would be exceeded.
Until then, I'm keepin ma monay, MFs!

It is amazing to me how utterly clueless people are in regards to this release. Yes, it's a cynical repackaged, market over-saturating, wildly unnecessary greatest hits, but WB has the ability to release a lot of Prince deluxe reissues if they so choose. If they deem the market is not supportive, they might reconsider certain plans. Whether chart positions "matter" to Prince is completely irrelevant.

Nah, some folks want it, some don't. It's really that simple.

.

The '4ever' release isn't a test to see how much demand there is for vault material. If it was, there'd be vault material on it (more than one token track).

.

The only thing '4ever' sales figures will determine is how much of a market there is for even *more* repackaged hits collections.

I agree with you in that this is not a litmus test specifically for a market for vault material. I think it is more zoomed out. Warner Bros. is certainly cynical enough to expect hard core fans to jump at one vault song on a pointless hits package. They are absolutely banking on it. I think it's a litmus test for Prince in general. If it flops, the excitement level for WB to finance further reissues is perhaps not as high of a priority as it would be if it were a hit.

Did we ever contemplate the 4ever thing?

It is a song.

But it is not present on the CD's which are labelled as such.
