The album is a masterpiece. Not quite my favourite, but maybe the definitive Prince album.

1999 Has always been my 2nd favourite album, only behind Sign othe Times and just ahead of Parade and Purple Rain. It is the album that cemented Prince's status as a genius of music. Light years ahead of everyone else and funky as all hell. Also one of his nastiest (Sexual) albums ever.

IMO, 1999 is a great track, but to me it has been so overplayed. I like way more of his song's that you rarely, or if ever, heard on the radio, like you say hidden gems.
