I've always though it was one of his better late efforts - I prefer it to Lotusflower, and it is better than Planet Earth

Well all that says is you have more childish tastes in music as lotus and planet earth while not the greatest, they are more mature album, while mplsound is his most childish and cringeworthy album ever.

I do find it weird that you try and correlate the ability to aprpeciate music with age.

I can only think that you're referring to Dad Rock, which tends to be boring, safe and uninspiring, MOR AOR, play your guitar with earnest because you've run out of ideas. Over thought and usually pretty soulless.

If the tastes I have are childish then I'll take that anyday (I'm in my 40's), it's like what Picasso said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

You sit there rubbing your chin, listening to people rock on, I'll let the music connect straight with my subconscious thanks smile

I recently started listening to Mplsound, having completely abandoned it for a good two years. It's much better than I remembered!

(There'll Never B) Another Like Me is a great opener. Funky and tongue-in-cheek, it reminds me in a way of Prettyman, though less 'laugh out loud' funny.

I also like the use of the sped-up voice on Dance 4 Me and Ol' Skool Company. I'll probably have quite a few orgers at my throat for this, but I'd even go as far as to say that Dance 4 Me is as good as some of the original Camille tracks that used the sped-up effect.

In reality almost the whole album's pretty good. The only real weak point is Chocolate Box, which I think of as like an inferior sibling to (There'll Never B) Another Like Me with all the humour removed.

[PS: I've forgotten, how do you make paragraph breaks?]

Too easy.

.

It is, of course, subjective.

.

So how would YOU personally define "bad taste?"

Lol just google examples of bad taste. Sure people who have bad taste are probably oblivious to the fact, but if you do an image search of bad taste you'll probably see therss a universal acknowledgement. Just as Ste standard of beauty is pretty much universal too. In a beauty pageant there isn't much surprise as to how they look, and the same for cars and almost everything else. Is there subjection involved? Sure, but there is a real universal standard of things whether you like to admit it or not. So no, not easy. If you really think that then you're the one who delusional.

.

Copy that. Let the record show - you're unable/unwilling to even attempt to define your own personal conception of "bad taste."

.

What your'e saying is extremely shortsighted, but also telling in terms of your own outlook. Beauty pageants? Really??? If something as superficial as pageant is your go-to example of the "universal standard" of beauty, HOLY CHRIST you're one shallow so-and-so!

.

Can I get an "amen"?

I never would have thought that there could be fans that would NOT like this great little album. In my opinion it's a lot easier to digest than the equally great lotusflow3r. But I listen to MPLSound a lot more, just because it's just plain fun.

MPLSound is a crap album - especially when compared to P's peak work, but just in general.

.

I just think the OP is wildly overstating his case. And I disagree with his notion that there is a universal conception of "bad taste" or "good taste."

There's a couple good songs on it, but it's such an inconsequential blip on the man's discography.

Ok I and that I agree with. It IS just a blip on one of the greatest artists of our time and it is inconsequential in the bigger picture and this legacy. But it is pretty FN bad under most barometers of good and bad and especially taste. Its not, and will never be an acclaimed album by anyone or though of as anything close to "good" but a small few with more childish tastes.

My take on MPLSound is that it is a nice pop album for the mature, fun-loving Prince fan, parts to definitely be enjoyed tounge-in-cheek. To me "Better with Time" reminds me of tea time with treacle, lace doilies and all, shot through a vaseline-smeared lens that would take a lot more time and loss for me to be able to appreciate--or not. For now, there are tons of other songs expressing this sentiment that I can enjoy more.

And havinng read through this thread, Ingela's take on the album is a pretty solid one-note joke that becomes ever more humorous with each re-telling. Thank you for that!

Thats your opinion and that's cool. Note that your opinion is a minority one that I consider a joke too. Bad taste is bad taste whether you like, it or not. I can admit to liking cheesy tracks but I acknowledge it as what it is. When you can't tell, taste or smell when something is bad that's when you can become a joke, especially when you become upset at not knowing.

Lol. Springfield can always be trusted to provide an angry mob when you need one.

.

Btw, I've remembered something else I like about Mplsound. Here is a nice song, and I especially like that synthesiser riff. I don't know how to describe the effect; it's like the notes were sliding off each other or something. He does a similar thing on Kiss and on the album version of Rave. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? If so, does that sound effect have a particular name?

.

Don't worry Lianachan, I'm not about to tell you Here is as good as Kiss. The mere fact that I like it probably means Ingela's about to insult me anyway, haha.

And I'm laughing at you too as you are oblivious to your bad taste. There is nothing wrong with it so don't be so defensive. But it's a little different for you as some things in bad taste are popular. Men who love My Little Pony, Bronies? Or people who live Vanilla Ice. Things in.bad taste CAN be popular. MPLSOUND is not. It has no popularity, it's not even a niche. It's just you and maybe two three other people who get defensive because someone dare call it out. Embrace it as your bad taste and move on. The laughing is at you.

And I didn't call you Genesia but merely answered her question I knew she would be reading that response as well as each and every one. She's mother troll here calling everyone a troll who disagrees with her narrow view of all things Prince.

But I'm done. Enjoy. I have my opinion and nothing more to say.
...Ok oneore thing, you called it an album for a "mature" audiences. Lmfao. That is something worth laughing out loud about. That is why people are laughing. Or did you mean mature audiences ages 4-10 year olds.

"I don't like it" would have been sufficient.

"I think it's Prince's worst album" or "I think it's a mediocre album", why not?

But this...

Either you don't think it and therefore u could have added an emoticon to indicate your awareness of the statement's exaggeration.

Or you think it and then u probably haven't heard many albums. As in very few. As in "I'm 12 years old and i've just bought my fifth CD ever".

No it's BECAUSE I listen to a lot of music and MPLSOUND is among the worst albums ever made made. Lazy, stupid, derivative, and aiming at the lowest common denominator. Embarrassing for Prince to ever think releasing was a good idea. The really off thing is he must have known it wasn't that great and maybe just threw it out there for those whining for that "old" sound and shut them up, because he releases the album with Lotusflow3r, one of his best in the longest time. One he actually used help in the studio with the sound. But if YOU think MPLSOUND is good, which indeed apparently seems it is aimed at the 12 year old and under crowd . Then you are 12 and haven't listened to many albums to compare with. It's a stupid amateurish album and is indeed not just his worst, but among the worst ever released by anyone of any genre.

I'm sorry, Ingela. I wasn't aware that you did not know how to distinguish to whom you're responding in your post. confused

>

Continue with your dislike of MPLSound as you like--no problem--different strokes for different folks;

I get that you feel your taste is elevated above the fray of most on this thread. That's allright with me.

>

In my book, trolling is OK if you can be clever about it and make a cool point, but a one-note remark on someone's thread on how terribly bad an album is in the history of music is just--well, I guess to be generous is kind of like one of Prince's sustained-note layers to a song--an underlying component that enhances the whole and provides a kind of quiet depth to the layers of melody and rhythm above which enhances a listener's (and reader's, as is the case with this thread) enjoyment.

>

I believe that the album would be particluarly enjoyable for the seasoned Prince fan due to the artist's application of his classic 1980s instrumentation in parts of this collection of songs that these people readily know and can enjoy the nostalgia. nod

I get that you feel your taste is elevated above the fray of most on this thread. That's allright with me.

Of course and not just me but 99.9999 of the population also. Look we all acknowledge Prince is a genius who has amassed an incredible catalog of music. Then there is MPLSOUND. Im supprised at the backlash as it's always been considered among his very worst. Childish, badly produced and executed excrement is not a universal appeal or considered of good taste. Its quite the opposite my friend.

But we all like what we like. Enjoy!

Indeed. I'm glad you're still here with us.

One song on MPLSound that you might consider a LCD candidate, enjoyed by the 0.0001 part of the "population" as you identify, reminds me of a good 'n trashy telenovela. We all need to do something a lil' bad, or enjoy a little (harmless) something off the rails every now and then to get our kicks! Shucks, you exhibit this now with your contributions to this particular thread--it's cool.

Its all good. And the only trolls here are those who are so eager to call anyone who doesn't drink the Kool-aid trolls. Glad you to hear you finally acknowledge it's like trashy telenovela. Its all cool. It is what it's is. But I wish at least like a telenovela I wish it was at least kinda charming and fun.
