Thanks for all these great insights; I learned a lot.
I know Prince was black and supportive of the black community, I just felt that when he went natural with his hair, suddenly he was REALLY into the black thing. I look at the difference between Montreux 2009 & Montreux 2013 for instance. HUGE difference musically. So I was wondering why.

Maybe it was as simple as returning to his roots. But I just always wondered if after his 2nd marriage ended he sort of got extreme about some things (for him).

It's funny that people mention his face weight change because I have noticed that in some photos of him around 2012-2013 he had the same face as he did as a kid in that way. I always just thought it was cute that he "still" had that and maybe he was eating more. But prednisone can cause a puffy face all over too.

i do remember that there was a boxer, vinny pazienza, who got into a motorcycle accident and broke his neck, the docs told him he'd never fight again. He did fight again at a much heavier weight so the rumours were that the steroids he took to help him heal also helped him put on muscle. He sure looked like a steroid user, bloated and puffy. Boxers, when they move up more that a couple divisions, i'm talking 3 or 4, they almost always start to look soft and flabby, not like him. So, maybe those kinds of steroids do help you put on muscle too. I do know that the kind of roids that bodybuilders use cause their skulls to grow and they all have that characteristic gap in their two front teeth because of it. Look at Arnold or any other top bodybuilder, they often have a bigger head and a gap.

Listen to the track "The Sacrifice of Victor" that was in 92. Uncle Sam was probably written for Tevin Campbell around the same time!

He talks about his being born with a cord wrapped around his neck in Sacrifice of Victor.

Mama held up her baby 4 protection
From a man with a strap in his hand
Ask the Victor 'bout pain and rejection
U think he don't when he do understand

I know joy lives 'round the corner
{Joy for sale down on the corner} (we sacrifice)
One day I'll visit her I'm gonna
{Out on my block I'm just a loner} (we sacrifice)
When she tell me everything {tell me}
That's when the angels sing {sacrifice}
That's when the victory is sho 'nuff {sho 'nuff down with the sacrifice}
(we sacrifice)
(help me)
{S.A.C.R.I.F.I.C.E}
(we-we-we sacrifice)
(Don't say it preacher)
(sac-sacrifice)
(we-we-we sacrifice)

1967 in a bus marked public schools
Rode me and a group of unsuspecting political tools
Our parents wondered what it was like 2 have another color near
So they put their babies together 2 eliminate the fear
We sacrifice yes we did
Fighting one another, (we sacrifice) (don't say it preacher)
All because of color
The angel of hate - she taught me how 2 kick her
If she called me anything but Victor (u mean like nigger?)
If the only thing that tells me is father time
Then sacrifice is the mutha sublime - we love it

Listen mutha - we sacrifice

Hold yo' text, deacon

Never understood my old friends laughing
They got high when everything else got wrong (pass the booze up here)
Dr. King was killed and the streets
They started burnin'
When the smoke was cleared, their high was gone
Education got important, so important 2 Victor
A little more important than ripple and weed
Bernadette's a lady, and she told me (what she say?)
"Whatever u do son, a little discipline is what u need,
Is what u need, u need to sacrifice"

I know joy lives 'round the corner
{Joy for sale down on the corner} (we sacrifice)
One day I'll visit her I'm gonna
{Out on my block I'm just a loner} (we sacrifice)
When she tell me everything {tell me}
That's when the angels sing {sacrifice}
That's when the victory is sho 'nuff {sho 'nuff down with the sacrifice}
(we sacrifice)

Hey Wendy, how come we... (we sacrifice)
'scuse me y'all (we sacrifice)
We don't don't mean 2 take up yo time (joy around the corner)
But we got something
Heavy on our minds (we sacrifice)
Yes, we do (we sacrifice)
Sometimes, u gotta leave the one u love
Somebody, anybody, everybody wave your hand
Around the corner, there's another sacrifice (joy around the corner)
But u got 2 do the best u can y'all (we sacrifice)
Say u got 2 go through it (go through it)
U got 2 go through it all (go through it all)
High glory, yeah
Sell it, don't tell it, don't tell me (joy around the corner)
...nice at my feet

Lord I might get tired,
But I, I've got 2 keep on (we sacrifice)
Walkin' down this road, (we sacrifice)
Keep on walkin' down this road (joy around the corner)
When I reach my destination (we sacrifice)
My name will be Victor

Amen

Steroids given for surgeries, some infections can and do cause side effects like a much bigger appetite, puffiness in the face, sleep disturbances & agitation. I have no information on Prince's health, just on corticosteroid prescriptions.

I noticed Prince becoming much more socially aware and active in his 50's😎
I noticed President Obama being more vocal about injustices in minority communities, LGBT, gun control and some women's equality issues in his second term (I'm not an expert so don't kill me-just my observation). I remember thinking "when is Oprah going to talk about real issues?"" before she left daytime television. I have wondered, if Prince had lived and been healthy, would he have been even more involved in social justice. Because it seemed, for whatever the reason, Prince was not so busy chasing women (and had bigger things on his mind and in his heart. ....Maybe I'm just projecting but I think there was something there.

I believe he cared deeply about the black community. I think he loved God deeply. I think he was bored with fussing with his hair - like me!!! I think he was disappointed that race relations are what they are -STILL. He's of my generation - my 70's self never could have imagined this 2016.😱

i do think that the older you get the less selfish you get, or rather, that is the way it is suppossed to work. Plenty of people in their 60's and 70's who are as infantile as anyone though. Prince, I think had evolved. His hair and makeup, i don't know what to make of. some people think the sloppy makeup in particular were signs that he was not well. I don't know.

There were signs in these last years that he wasn't well. The hair and makeup indicate that to me. I don't know what to make of it, either.

yeahthat

I do think he looked quite a bit thinner in the last year. I have nothing to say about that except that I noticed it. But there's nothing wrong with the fro or the makeup, although I though he looked just fine without it (the make-up that is). wink

Could the 'fro been a product of his alleged illness? I had a friend that died of liver falure and her scalp was florescent yellow. Not saying Prince had liver falure but if his health was waning maybe he was getting jaundiced in parts of his skin (as can happen) and he didn't want hairstylists to be asking too many questions. Just a thought, NOT trolling.

no idea, from what i read, he began doing his own makeup too so it seems he may have wanted more privacy for whatever reason. I still don't get it, as smart and rational and calculating as prince was you'd think he would have been ahead or on the curve of whatever problem was there, he usually was. Stuff still don't make sense to me but we'll get more answers as time goes by.

Agree with all of the above discussions! And love all of you in this discussion. Six months gone and we still care so much.

I loved Prince's hair always. (Okay, not the Typhoon! But he still looked fine.)
His fro reminded me so much of all the guys I was close to in school - black, brown and white. My mom had a fro for years because it was easier.

The style of his hair wasn't the concern - it was the change in something in his Energy, some of his lyrics, his frailty, something was different.

His blackness made him more beautiful, not less. I've been trying to picture in my mind what a white musician dressed like Prince and singing those songs in 1979 would have been like. Mick and Bowie, loved them both - especially Bowie but they could not do what Prince did. Hendrix, fantastic & groundbreaking but Prince!!! He was something otherworldly and part of that was his beautiful blackness. I cant separate that from what I love about him - because he was that. Honestly, I think Prince would have been Magical in any incarnation💕 Peace and love
